Only one choice for PvP right now... which was a pretty fail move on trions part. I expect the server pvp they just closed to reopen on expansion launch. Don't think its just me who feels that pvp is a large part in making MMos more entertaining, and I'm not even the hardcore pvp type either.
As for coming back, I'd say yes. Theres no reason not to come back, specially with an expansion coming. Rift is (IMO) the best MMO out there, specially if your the raiding type. They are pushing out a lot of new content such as Chronicals and Instant adventures which stand to change it up quite a bit compared to similiar games. Again, I'm bias towards the game but I'd say to give it a shot. If anything deserves a retry, its the fact Trion is in charge. You can tell the company is about making good products over profit and that has always been a good mark for success that some companies seem to forget.
which server PVE is most populated ? I really loved the RIFT leveling experience when pvp was active... what killed RIFT for me was:
1. leveling was way too short.
2. too many twitchy raids, running and dodging crap.
3. pvp gear grinds - I never thought pvp gear should exist in any game, just an open world free for all and pvp over something ( resources, mobs, etc )
I doubt i would raid seriously again but i would enjoy competetive open world pvp..
I stopped playing at 1.9, but recently played the Beta and am currently playing the free weekend.
The PVE was really nice. I had a blast with the new IAs. The new continent, what I saw, seemed really cool too, but the buffer, Fluffy, gave lvl 47ish armor so I couldn't really play much of it (coinlocked because I'm not subbed). If it included the free month, I'd buy it immediately, but even the $24.99 deal at gamersgate + $15 for a month is kind of meh. After getting burnt hard on TOR and GW2, I'm reluctant to buy an MMO (even an expansion to a game I like) at launch.
PVP is relatively fun, but pretty dead. There were rampant balance issues in the Beta, esp. with the new harbinger class. AOE healing got nerfed, making warden the only viable pvp healer for clerics. The Beta only had one new BG. The new classes and skilltrees make it fun because it switches things up. OTOH, if you haven't played in a while, some of the classes are radically different.
The pvp server (Seastone?) was dead as of 1.9, I didn't even try playing my toon off of it. People were actually complaining about world pvp (on the pvp server!) I started playing on the pve one becaquse there were more people. For better or worse, it's primarily a pve community.
I wish TERA had instanced pvp below cap (or 57 or whatever it is).
I was thinking of returning too, because the expansion looks really good. However, when I went to the class forums, I noticed it was still 2 button macro gameplay, which I find unappealing. Does anyone know if they'll overhaul the classes in this coming expansion to get rid of this simplistic 2 button macro mashing? Because if they are, I'm for sure back on board for another round.

They changed all the classes. Combat isn't spectacular or exciting and PVE is still largely you spamming the rotation macro, with somewhat more movement than EI though. The new zones are nice though.
IMO, in most tab-target MMOs, in pve (pvp tends to have more panic buttons/macros and attacks specific to certain classes), you generally can reduce gameplay to 3-4 macros if you write decent ones. You generally spam a rotation macro while levelling too. That's just about every tab target not just this one.
The only class tree you could actually play with 2 macros was the purifier, which only worked as MT healer anyway. War and rogue in pvp were about 4-5 macros (and are commonly played with about 3, albeit somewhat badly) which is kind of on the light end of things. That hasn't really changed. Now there's the harbinger, which is similar too. The purifier actually has viable shields now, so the class isn't quite as boring to play, though I still won't play it outside of MT healing, it's still too boring. The warden also has minor dps abilities.
Honestly, if macros bother you, you may want to avoid the fairly old-school tab-target MMO's like this altogether. I didn't have any more or less macros in this game than I ever did in WoW or TOR or Aion. This is not a twitch game. There are more action oriented combat games like TERA, DCUO, Vindictus, or RaiderZ if that's your thing.
I downloaded the free access for 5 days and I was disturbed to see how many servers are gone from the game now. Makes me believe this game has a bleak future.

Cross faction guilds too. The pop isn't really bad in-game though because you have cross-server dungeon and pvp queues.
I might buy the expac and play for a month or two, because honestly the new zones are pretty neat, but the fact they're not balancing anything for pvp still annoys me. The game has pretty much alienated their entire pvp playerbase.
I played on a pve server because the pvp pop is so low on the pvp one.
IDK, I wish there was a sub game with this quality, that updated as often as this, with a decent community and modern graphics like this that was a pvp game.
I think the expac will sell decently. RIFT tends to pick up dissatisfied WoW players and will probably do OK post Pandas.
