Ground combat and space combat are entirely separate. Space combat doesn't consume any skill points for this very reason; you're free to customize your 'ground' template as you please and it won't be impacted by what you pursue in Jump to Lightspeed.

If I'm not mistaken, you are given the option to become a member of your faction at some point while working through the newbie space missions. When that hits, join up. You'll probably want to go on leave because you're weak as a low level, but you can simply toggle your overt status on and off once you have joined your chosen faction.

Just decide what you consider to be a higher priority - space or ground. Then level away.

Also, a tip: space combat is great for earning money at lower levels. You will loot large amounts of cash, can sell your looted components to NPC's, and will earn monetary rewards as you complete the quests.

    Hi,

    Thanks for replying fast

I did join the imperial faction.

    Another question?

Can I jump to a different server when I log on or do I have to stay on the server I stared out on?.

    Has this game changed alot?.

I remember trying it out on my freinds computer a little over a year ago and not liking it.This game feels more polished now and fun to play.

Thanks again for your fast reply

You can make up to 8 characters .... but only one character per server.

There is an option to transfer a character  (with skills, but no possessions) from one character to another .. but it costs some money. And Jedi are not transferred (as Jedi players have 2 characters on one server, one of them free).

At the loading screen you can create a new character on another server. From then on you can choose which character you want to play (unless you activate a feature where you are fast loading your main character without asking which server you want to play on).

The game has changed a lot ... for the better. Most of it has happened in the last 3 months (under pressure from the competition) and after May 5th with a total revamp of combat it will be like playing a new game. IMHO a change for the better. SWG has matured a lot and the community is much better now as the idiots, powergamers and flaming burned-out would-be Jedi have left.

    Have fun
