It depends what you are looking for from housing. If you enjoy building and customizing a house, UO is great for that. If you want housing for guilds and social gatherings UO and EQ2 both offer a lot of options on that front. If you're looking for something on ther large guild or territory claiming level, Darkfall and EVE take housing through the roof in that regard.

Agreed on this 100%. Building and decorating a house was a game unto itself.
Its sounding like EQ2 is the first to try. Think I already have it downloaded, just haven't had a chance to play it yet with college. Summer, here we come.

Build a variety of structures, from guard towers to stone houses to fences and statues.
Found your own settlement wherever you desire; own land, build a farm, a castle, or perhaps an entire village!
Pave roads to connect settlements and plant signs to improve local infrastructure.
Live off the land by creating fields to farm a variety of crops including potatoes, garlic, cotton, wheat, strawberries, pumpkins and more!
To date, and playable, I'd say Wurm and Asheron's Call, in AC1 your picked your housing plot based of travel convenence, good hunting spots, views, ect, combined with the zoneless overland, and only a few consolidated servers, it really made it feel like your house was unique.
Besides UO, I can't think of another game besides maybe Mortal online that makes housing unique and affects gameplay on an immersive level.
Isn't EQ2's housing instanced, and doesn't effect gameplay? So more like a dulled version of a small sims plot? With a tedious crafting mini-game...
I never could get into Wurm Online. It moves way to slow in my opinion for a video game. It takes forever to do anything in that game.
When it comes to instanced housing I would say it's EQ2 than Rift. Non instanced housing there isn't really a good option except maybe UO unless you want to deal with a game pace like Wurm.
Dragon's Prophet I guess has land plots you build your house on but I still think the doors are instanced but I'm not positive about that.
Eq2 has the best housing at this time. It is instanced but the options are more or less endless. There is even a guild for home decorators at the AB server named homes and tomes.

Crafting isn't tedious.
It is instanced but the amount options and customization is crazy good. Also, quests rewards you with housing items, some instances even have housing items on the walls etc. Not to mention things like your epic weapons have a wall mountable option once you get the upgrade.
EQ2's housing is more than just a "sim plot", it's an expression of creativity, as well as your achievements throughout the game.

no, you can not burn down someone's house. Actually, more housing should be like the sims, it's one of the best selling games of all time. The thing that perked my wife's ears up about wildstar was the intracate housing system.
yeah in ultima online, where you put your house was based on endless reasonings. Can i make alot of money here plus will i never be stalked, or "can i or wil i be pk/pked" easily' what are my choke points. my thing was for peacefull crafting in t2a era.

I'd say out of MMORPG's Wurm Online
Free to play, with a skill cap, but high enough you can experience everything, just not the really intricate works.

I have heard about the wurm community and how they harass new players.

I fully agree with this assessment. Instance housing is like instance PvP, it pales in comparison to the open world version.
