Since everyone seems to have skipped over it, but do sandbox games have natural disasters in them?

I can't think of any that naturally had them. EQ1 had a few I think that were tied to an event, the only one I can recall being the disease outbreak in Karana.

Ryzom has changing seasons..but no natural disasters sadly.

It's a neat idea though. image

Love was a lot of fun, but one of those games masses of players will probably never get into.

And Ryzom is anything but dead, I stuck my head in 3 weeks ago and there were more people in Pyr than I ever saw prior to the server merge.

edit: But otherwise I do agree, I would like to see more PvE/sandbox oriented games on the market in general.

Thought Archeage was going for a PvP approach as well?

Though, it seems a lot of stuff in EVE is more for PvP...but for sandbox games that are already out (released, not in development/testing)...it does make a good PvE game. Compared to most other sandbox games out.

I haven't followed it by any means, but it sounds like it has a lot of PvE content, while sieges and such will be something to do at endgame. The game is suppose to have themepark-ish quests in it, which some people think makes it more of a sandpark like Vanguard or Everquest.

No honest clue though, haven't heard much about it recently other than they're looking for a publisher.

I was very close to giving Eve another go to see if the PvE was any better from when I last played. It'd be neat if I could make enough isk to keep my account running through plex, but then I got distracted by planetside 2. image

I might still give it another go sometime soon though.

Cataclysmic events, but not often natural disasters, primarily because if you are going to do something epic to the gameworld, you want to build up to it.

Xsyon will have a PvE and PvP servers. More features than any game out ever! People just don't want to play a real MMORPG anymore. Just watch the comments.

That there's anyone on these forums that still thinks like this is amazing.

FF14 seems to be using map wide destruction to define a Realm Reborn.

Some might say FF14 was a natural disaster in and of itself. I'm quite attached to my little mid-lander female though.

Well, I'm just saying, a dynamic/random/whatever word fits best natural disaster system could be interesting, because:

    1. They will occur regardless whether you want them to or not, and you can't really STOP them, only slow them down or make sure that whatever items you have aren't destroyed by them.
    2. They can force players to adjust how they approach certain zones, instead of just plowing through everything ignoring the environment.
    3. If housing is involved, then professions related to housing can be used as a means to deal with these disasters ie storm barriers, heavy roofs for tsunamis, reinforced pillars for earthquakes, etc.
Granted, this might be a little too ambitious, especially since the current industry seems to be having trouble dealing with static moldable worlds as it is, but it's just a thought.

It's not about holding hands and killing mobs with no consequences or risk. It's about building things, creating, carving out civilizatoin. No one said anyting about "not having risk".

These people want to be able to solve survival puzzles, make somethng that is akin to a civilization, create a hovel deep in hte woods and survive, have the challenges of living in a virtual world. It's "man against nature" that they are intersted in not "man against man". If those terms even resonate with you?

Games like SWToR, WoW and GW2 dont' even remotely offer this type of game play.

Very well said. I hope Xsyon's kickstarter will work out and we'll get a PvE server then. I'm afraid though that the 250K goal is a bit too ambitious.

Actually, there is another PvE sandbox MMORPG not mentioned here...one that people take a look and gawf at. But it is a sandbox...and an mmorpg...and it has tons of PvE and more content than most other mmorpgs...with optional PvP...Runescape.

     From the site:

This project will only be funded if at least $250,000 is pledged by Tuesday Jan 1, 3:00am EST.

They have just over 3k.  If this project ever sees the light of day it will be a miracle which is a pity.  It needs a major publisher to step in with some serious funding.
