Need help with Custom PC Build!!!

cartermaticcartermatic Member Posts: 53

Ok... so i bought a pc about a year ago which is still very high end and powerful, but the problem is that i go to LAN Parties very very often and my PC weighs about 40 lbs and is a Full tower.  I am looking for something with the same power/ stronger. but much smaller haha. I'm not too sure on a laptop but i can consider one.  I also want it to be easy to move. My current pc is

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU         960  @ 3.20GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.2GHz

             Memory: 8192MB RAM

Available OS Memory: 8184MB RAM

Page File: 4149MB used, 12214MB available

        Windows Dir: C:Windows

    DirectX Version: DirectX 11

Card name: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series (6970)

       Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Chip type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x6719)

     Display Memory: 1770 MB

   Dedicated Memory: 2030 MB

      Shared Memory: 3835 MB

       Current Mode: 1920 x 1080 (32 bit) (60Hz)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is my current set up. I have about $1400 to work with here. I don't need a monitor/Keyboard/Mouse or any of that stuff. Just case and everything in there.  I would also like it to be SLI/Crossfire compatible and able to last me a few years in max settings with the occasional video card upgrade and what not...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

In terms of mobility i was looking at these,

http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/LAN_Warrior_II_-_Intel_X79

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/LAN_Party_EVO_Mini

But the second does not seem to be able to hold too much power for long.. and the first can not run the 3rd gen intel proccessors... which i would love to get one of those also... haha

Will your cpu and gpu not fit on a micro atx mobo / case ?

I'm not entirely sure. I'm not the most computer savvy person I just know like what kind of parts are powerful and what not haha. Idc what case it is in or what is looks like that much. just that it will stay somewhat cool (temp) and the parts inside are powerful

Just saying, you might be able to fit your bits you have in a microtower with a change of motherboard

Having said that, the rig you currently have sounds bloody fantastic. Maybe buy some weights instead of a second pc :)

Well yeah i get what you are saying. Sorry i geuss i should word it better, I am selling my current pc to my bro because his is destroyed and hedoes not have the money to purchase a new rig capable of handling current games.

Look for something in a smaller tower then with a micro atx motherboard rather than a full

    Cpu i5 3750k gpu 7950

Or if you want to spend more i7 with gtx680

If you are serious about wanting to go with a small form factor computer for LAN parties and are willing to build the system yourself (or hire someone locally to do so) I suggest you check out my post on the following thread.

    http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/370251/page/2

One thing you will have to consider is just how much SLI/Xfire means to you.  That configuration cannot be done on a Mini ITX size system as the MB lacks PCIe slots you would need.  Also while it can be done in a Micro ATX build that will be highly dependant on the MB/Case you purchase.  And while all the smaller form factor cases suffer from reduced airflow in most cases it's not to the point you can't build an uber systems in one.  That is until you restrict airflow even more by adding in an additional GPU which not only increases internal temps by virtue of being the hottest component in your system but further reducing airflow by taking up needed space to allow said air to move through out the case.

The best advice I can give you if you want a portable yet powerful desktop system is simply forget about SLI/Xfire and concentrate on building the best single GPU system you can afford.  As long as you are the type of person who can actually keep some money in a savings account you can simply upgrade to the next best single GPU when you feel your current one isn't cutting it anymore.  This not only provides you with the latest GFX tech (something you risk losing by attempting to up performance by adding an older card) but in most cases is cheaper as you don't need to worry about buying the more expensive MB and PSU to support such a rig.  And of course it opens up a LOT of options for a portable desktop which is the main thing you are looking for.

Follow the above link to my previous post and then follow the links imbedded there.  You have nothing to lose and a wealth of knowledge to gain!
