Is investing in a kickstarter like investing in a stock?  Do you get shares or somekind of return on the investment if the game is succesful?

No.  Consider it more of a pre-order or buying little goodies related to the product.

Your return on investment is the actual game product and whatever items they offer for the tier of kickstart donation.

My thinking on Kickstarter is it is more like a penny stock - just a gamble and if you don't get a return on investment, it goes with the territory.

I would never think of Kickstarter as anything other than gambling.

Why would you even expect a RoI?

Its pretty much preorder + bonus goodies.  You can also see what you get for investing X amount of dollars.

Kickstarter is a campaign to raise funds through crowd sourcing. The people responsible for creating the campaign provide entitlements, via rewards, set in tiers. The larger your donation the greater the reward.

The donator is obligated to pay when the base amount is reached. If the base is not reached, then the donator is under zero obligation to fulfill said donation.

It's nothing like investing in the stockmarket...
