I thought they pulled the plug on Darkfall, and Unholy Wars isn't out yet. In that case, Darkfall isn't a choice right now at all, whether the best or otherwise. Am I mistaken on the game's current status?

as far as fully non-instanced, fully open virtual worlds go, it has:
the best PVE out there, best mob AI
the best world design out there (one of the larger ones also)
but if you don't wanna be constantly attacked by other players & have ALL the items you were carrying taken on a fairly regular basis, don't even consider it.
unless you are great at PVP and can be the one killing and taking all the loot more often than not. 8) that's what the game is all about. that's the way it was designed. if you don't play that way, you will be at a big disadvantage compared to other people. it takes a whole different mindset to play the game as it was designed.

The beta for the game is launching today any second by now.

yes, the beta supposedly will be starting any minute now.
one that is open to anyone who pre-orders the game (costs only the $15 sub fee if you own DF1)
You say no because you lose items that can be replaced, or because you were griefed? Well, DF provides the freedom to get revenge. No other game offers that.
What today's MMO's lack these days are what Darkfall offers.
Darkfall brings back emotional investment in your character. You will experience high highs and low lows. The high and lows are where memories are made. All other current themepark MMO's offer you is a flatline.
Darkfall also has player accountability. With one character you can and will make a name for yourself. For the good or bad, it is up to you.
Edit:
I posted this in another thread but it was quickly buried so you may find it of interest:
Let me tell you guys a story I experienced in Darkfall 1. I was out farming some mobs on the ice island (Niflheim) which our alliance controlled the eastern side. There was some troublesome enemies that lived in some of the villages and chaos city nearby and they would occasionally organize and come raid our cities. Anyways, I was farming some dwarves for about an hour and had a decent amount of gold when a rare chest key dropped. I think it was about a 2000 gold value. So I decide to head back and along the way I spot a chaos chest a little ways away. These are random chest around the world which normally contain minimal gold etc, but there is a chance of rare items. I look in my bag and see that I got a large villa deed which is a large house. Now my heart is racing. I've got my head phones on full blast now. I hear hoof beats in the distance and look around and spot two riders. They spot me and turn in my direction. I hop back on my mount and start making for the straightest route to our city with two of them right on my tail. I open the gate of our city and barrel straight toward the bank and deposit my gold, keys and deed in the bank. They did not follow me.
It was moments like this that make darkfall special. I have many more stories of great loss and gains. No other game that I have ever played has given me so many great memories.
In The end it was just the grind that got to me, so if that is fixed we are in for a treat.
Ps: I never did find an available spot for my house deed and when I was ready to leave the game for good, I raided an enemy city with the deed on me. I put up a good fight but was eventually swarmed. I made the day of the person who looted me.

The things i love about Darkfall:
1st of all the feeling of fear and danger, that is soooo rare in MMOs today.
2nd i love the fact that my clan, isn't just a mindless chatbox. I play with them, i train with them, we protect eachother... and basically you really feel like you are doing something with other people.
3rd i love the to farm all the trees, rocks, waters, bushes and make items
I didn't play DF1.0 either and for some reason I am absolutely stoked on Darkfall: Unholy Wars. Probably because I love PvP and I've missed that 'feeling' in MMO's of where you actually CARE about your character; when dying was something absolutely horrible so you played extremely focused and well. I love the idea that you have one character and you stake your reputation on it.
People who missed out on DF 1, really missed out on a game that makes memories.
However, a HUGE number of people were detered by what might have been the worst UI in gaming history. DF:UW seems to have made it a point to address thast issue. So I know for many, the game becamw far more attractive

They pulled the plug because they knew they blew it. The basic model didn't work in the first version, I don't see it working with a 2.0. This is just a developer playing at the heart of die-hard gamers everywhere. They are cashing in on a prayer because hard core ground gamers don't have a place to call home. I've said it before, but I seriously wish a company like CCP would be the ones making this game.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:
"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

yah, IMO, thats the most important improvement they could have made. and since the UI was so bad, we're pretty much guaranteed the new one will be at least BETTER. 8) the screenshots make it look MUCH better, but hopefully we'll find out in an hour or 2.
i had several real life friends that loved a lot about Darkfall, but the old UI was just too much for them to put up with.
but the roles and grind improvements are extremely important fixes too. many that got past the UI couldn't get past the neverending grind of the old game.
I am happy you have a game but DF could be so much more if they did certain things different. I think the hype for this game is a bit to great and its opening up for another failure.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
The opportunity to defend your city with your friends and then enjoy the celebration afterwards.
Darkfall creates fun memories like very few games can.
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76) Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
There is a high level of hype in this thread and I hope people don't get too disappointed if the game is not what they want.
DF1 was a small world compared to other games out there. GW1 was bigger. Now Rift, GW2, and TERA are all bigger, if the game is the same area. Do not like open world PvP - only want to PvP when I want to not when someone says 'kill da noob'. That was one of the reasons DF1 failed - people got turned off by the game play.

Lulz
LOL what?!
you obviously didn't play the game
Obviously a mistake. Maybe he is talking about the community.
Regardless, IMO most people left because of the grind to be pvp viable and since Darkfall 2010 was supposed to come out people were biding their time.
