Are you kidding? 99% dialogue scenes with static camera is what you call "very good cutscenes" ? It´s always the same gestures of two characters standing and talking.
this is what I call an example for "very good cutscenes" in an MMO
I am also a huge TSW fan but that doesn't mean i like it when people pull stuff out their ..(you know where) to make a point.
99%? you say? its only been 2 or 3 months since i stopped playing SWTOR but my memory is quite good. I think you are confusing GW2's static cut scenes with SWTOR.
please show me one link to a good SWTOR cutscene on youtube without boring static camera, maybe I missed them while I leveled two classes to 50 before I gave up
I would love to but i don't think that will stop your exaggeration. You are clearly very biased when it comes to any other MMO which is not TSW.
TSW too have a lot of static coversations. I can also pull statistics out of my behind to make a point but i rather not.

Watched the video, and aside on nice poetry, it's the most static cutscene I've ever seen. It's a stactic monologue with nothing going on. Well, maybe except the light moving around.

Just made one movie which is maybe a bit static but one of my favorites in SWTOR... so romantic and poetic and old fashioned...
Marriage on Voss - my Imperial Agent fell in love with Voss girl... or just using her as a way to get information... does not matter.... so he...... (video is a spoiler)
I love the cutscenes in SWTOR. However, just considering the cost, it is going to make it very prohibitive to do in any future MMO's. The capital outlay for doing them does not mitigate the risk of a successful or a failed attempt. Further, those sort of cutscenes don't add as much when they really have little effect on the story itself. There are only minor "consequences" that occur from player choices and they almost never effect the final outcome of the story itself.
Will there be good MMO's in the future....sure. Will they have cutscenes as appears in SWTOR? Probably not.

Aye, I married the Voss too, pledged the 1000 year path, told her I loved her, pledged to follow her traditions, got her family to like me ..
Then went back to the ship and slept with Kaliyo, later dumped her and married Raina, but continued having mistresses around the galaxy. Savior of the Universe, and bigot extraordinaire! :P

Played EQ for years and loved it without cinematics.
I watch movies for movies , play mmorpg's for online interaction and gaming with lots of other people , not to be ripped out of the experiencience for a cinematic.

I agree, SWTOR cutscenes are very good. I can't help but sit through them.
On the other hand, I can definitely see future games beating it in the visual department.

I believe Square enix holds that title. The Pandaria introduction looked like a generic pixar ad #100.
Square does hold the title for cutscenes from FFXI. I have played alot of mmo's and none have been better than FFXI. Examples you say!? you dont trust me?
These arent even the best cutscenes. I have yet to this day see a game produce better cutscenes. And yes, graphics are meh at best, but this is a 9year old game, and graphics arent everything when it comes to a cs.

It's understanding, because you are a FF fan. Similarily I can tolerate the cutscenes in SWTOR because I'm a Star Wars fan (and they also have the dialog wheel, which is nice). On the whole though, I'd rather see companies invest in something with more of a real-time component (like post #30 link).
I give SWTOR a free pass, just like you give FFXI a free pass, but I'm generally not a huge fan of having to keep stopping what I'm doing to watch non-interactive video clips every so often. They need to be more interactive with what I'm doing in real-time .. where I'm standing .. who I'm looking at .. what I'm saying .. they have to be apart of the game, not something that feels foreign .. to me that's why HL2 feels way more immersive than just pre-fab video clips.
No slight to SWTOR's story though, but the delivery could be improved, especially flashpoints, ops, single player instances, and such, questing in general.

All these videos only prove one thing, Bioware´s cutscene director can´t even move a camera.
By the way the editing and cutting from one shot to the next is crazy, often misleading and breaks basic rules of how to work with camera angles quite too often. And yes I know what I´m talking about, I´m working with TV- and music video material, eight hours every day.
SWTOR:
Every. Freakin. Shot. Is. STATIC. NO. CAMERA. MOVEMENT.
Funny how they brag about the whole "fourth pillar storytelling" and think they could get away with these lame static cutscenes.
There is only ONE way to do it worse, and that is the GW2 way.
Anyway, "static" is the one word which best describes SWTOR. Static questing, static cutscenes, static planets, static loading screens, static environmental lighting. I didn´t find anything "dynamic" about this game, sadly.

With a budget like this, even a shimpanzee with a funny hat could create a game that is less static.

It's easy to criticize. It's easy to say oh, if I would have so much money I would do it better.
And I say it's BS. . You would get as much hate about your creation from others as SWTOR is getting from you.

Actually FromHell has a very valid point. I Enjoyed what they did with swtor till 50. then the game was trash. I enjoyed my sith inq cutscenes, but they are very static when compared to ffxi cutscenes, which include:
1) clear facial expressions
2) different shots. ex: medium shots, long shots, close ups, birds eye shots
3) camera movement. ex: camera panning left/right, tracking forword/backwards
4) editing techiniques such as wipes, fades, reaction shots, etc
When i compare that to starwars, looking at it from a mise en scene perspective, swtor falls flat in comparison. I say this not as a Fan or FF, because i am a fan of both FF and SWTOR, but i say this as someone who doing a logical, and theatrical perspective. Once you take a film class, you never look at things the same again. Even before i took the film class i still enjoyed what FF's cutscenes brought to the table over other games. Even with no voices, and it would always be the same, it still had more life to it that other games CS's
The 300m they spend was not well spent imo. To much on pointless things like voice acting and those cutscenes, when the rest of the gameplay was terrible. Its like spending 300mil to make a superman movie that was terrible, but people went to see if because it was superman..wait, that already happened.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2gQo-0VW5c (ok maybe budget wasnt 300m, more like 209mil)
Originally posted by GwapoJosh I hope not.. All that insane amount of money for a few minute cinematic could be used towards the actual game. An area that Swtor badly needed work on.
It was a strong and large trade off. Its a good game... but for MMO players the trade-off was too much it seems.

Just take away the part about HL2 being a FPS .. add a 3rd person perspective ... imagine if all those interactive scenes were in flashpoints /drool.
NPC's turn to look at the players when speaking to them, no matter where they are standing, very cinematic, very well done ..
