Looking for Suggestions: Father / Son MMORPG

Hi,

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

First a little backgound.  I am a 40 year old father living in the Southwest.  I am pretty much a Planetside addict right now but I have also played Earth and Beyond and Shadowbane for some time.

I have a son who is 11 years old - an avid gamer (Game Cube and Game Boy) and who lives 1500 miles away from me in the midwest.  His PC setup includes a 56K modem setup.  Mine has a cable connection.

My question for everyone is - can you suggest a good MMORPG that we could play together on-line. I am looking for one with the following attributes:

1) Works okay with a 56K modem (for my son)

2) Relatively OK for an 11 year old to play (does not have to be free of violence- but the violence should be ok for an 11 year old)

3) I'm not too concerned about difficulty because my son is pretty proficient at moving around on the PC etc.

4) One that would be fun!

Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to everyone's comments!

I'm not sure if there are any MMORPGs innately geared toward father/son interaction... however if you provided more information I might be think of something.  Perhaps a couple common interests in mmorpgs like min/max playing, powergaming, roleplaying, PvP/PK.  I could start spouting my favorites but I'm a bit of an odd ball so you would likely get all games with roleplaying communities. -.-

theres many games fun to interact with your son, but on 56k modem, that kind of narrows it down. I would suggest Dark Age of Camelot. It might get a little laggy when you Realm vs. Realm battle but i think that game best suits 56k that is fun at the same time.

I was gonna say Dark Age of Camelot as well. If only because I hear it's pretty stable even on a 56k connection. But as far as father and son playability is concerned, i would honestly think that pretty much every mmorpg could be played with by father and son. I knew of quite a bit of family DAoC users while i was still playing it, Mostly husbands and wives. As rathma said, it would probably get pretty laggy in realm vs. realms fighting, but i doubt that would necessarily be the focus of you and your sons playing. And, another good thing about DAoC i guess would be the fact that it's only 20 bucks, and the first month is of course free.

Good luck with finding a game for you and your son, my father who is 43 plays DAoC even though i do not anymore, and he has a blast.

on DAoC i have grouped with 2 sets of father and son, so in there, u both might be able to make friends witht he same family.....in EQ i havent seen father and son, but that is a nice game.

for an 11 year old...they both should be fine

    have funimage

I'm not sure wether to get DAoC or EQ. Apparently DAoC is only fun for a couple of months but that's pretty much all i'd be playing it for, well at least until good games come out like EQ II ,WoW or Dragon Empires. On the other hand EQ is supposed to be fun according to murtbijani, but i don't wanna pay so much money for all those expansions. What game should i buy to pass the time for the good games?

you dont have to get all the expansions, and explore the world, the whole time i was there the ONLY expansions i used were the ruins of kunark....thats it! i stayed mostly in the regular areas, the ones u get form eq classic

The expansions arent that much, original is lets see...10$, then i think a pack of three expansions, is about 30. Probably 50 for the game and all the expansions.

Daoc would be the best for your son to start on due to it's rather simple nature....if you outgrow that then there is always the rest :)

in daoc i joined a guild that was pretty much all family owned. the dad, son, daughter, dads sister, and dads brother played. its a very friendly game, especially for ppl new 2 mmorpgs.

To get DAoC and the expansion it's 30 bucks(which is canadian money buy the way, so like 25 for you guys) and to get all the expansions is around 50 for everquest(most likely 60 canadian). So i don't care how much money i just want a fun MMORPG that will pass by a couple of months till EQII and WoW

Rathma, condiser this, if you buy EverQuest Classic (10 dollars), you get the three main continents, and i think 13 races. Now if you want to go outside those large boundries and explore, you can buy the expansions. but whatever it's your choiceimage

I don't really care about the armour. The biggest thing i like to do in the game is explore. So is DAoC's world bigger and more interesting or EQ?

How do the expansions in EQ work? if i play on the latest one can i still go into the older ones while i'm playing? or are they all seperated into different servers.

well every realm in DAoC has 4 or 5 classes of armor, that's not alot. But in every class of armor there are three different styles of the armor which vary in the armor factor. Also, some of the rare weapons look extremely unique because some of them glow, flame, or have some other particle effect that makes them look powerful. Sure ... after a while, everyone starts to look more like clones in DAoC, but that's only a problem if all you care about is graphics, which aren't half bad at all i might add.

Rathma, i've never played EQ but i would guess that all the expansion are zoned together, i'm pretty sure that expansions aren't exclusive to certain servers.

lol yes . They are seperated by continents man not servers , u just take a boat ride or get a port .... its easy. And EQ is WAY better than daoc ive played both eq for 2 and a half years daoc for about 2months . EVERYTHING IN DAOC is the same ! it only gets larger ie the monsters! I fought a bug at level 7 and saw the same type of bug at lvl 40 just slightly bigger with a different name. Mythic has no imagination and it shooows
