Yay! I get to be bittervettish about something finally! Not that interested in social media to begin with, so this has no value added for me. I do bet it sounds great when pitched to the suits at HQ though.
Just hope it doesn't take much effort away from other useful programming to integrate this into the game.
Yeah someone high up is probably a twitter/facebook nerd and the devs are trying to score points......
I would block anyone who filled up their social media with this annoyance. Seriously, why should any of my real life friends care about my 'achievements' in a video game?
Maybe if they instead developed an in-game friend page with updates like Facebook, that would be more interesting. Most already do this to a minor extent with achievements published in guild tabs. But a more fleshed out version could be cool.
I guess it could be good for those who really want to use it, but for me, I think this is dangerous. The last thing we need is a way to identify real life names, families, addresses, and other personal information in a fantasy game where griefing, rez camping, pvp, trolling, and the like will no doubt occur. Hello, future lawsuits.
Originally posted by Vesavius Modern developers need really understand that building communities in these games has *nothing* to do wih Facebook... I hate recieved wisdom faddish thinking in games design like this tbh.
Some devs do understand, take Age Of Wushu as an example. The game is the most social mmo since EQ, you don't need facebook or any other media outlet. The whole game is based on intereaction with other players.
Pretty sure mmorpg.com done a write up on GW2 about the same thing.
I am sure they did, we are down to getting puff pieces on what the devs favourite colour is on GW2 on this site there have been so many... :P
But you are saying that they said GW2 wad a success when it came to community building? Or that it suffered from exactly the same broken thinking in that regard as we are seeing in TES?
so, not only the game interface with Facebook, but twitter and google circles too.. that just reeks of desperation to me, Zenimax reach new levels of epic failness, i just hope that it doesnt hurt the elder scrolls IP generally, as Bethesda is owned by Zenimax, if anything though, this news just reinforces my own opinion of the game, which is that this game will be one to avoid.
No thanks. This whole "import your friends into ESO" business will only work for friends who have also linked their accounts. And many might refrain from doing so due to already crumbling safety of web-anonymity.
Also, if you link your account, probably every single one of your friends on facebook will be able to see if, when and how long you are / have been playing ESO.
That doesn't lead to social connectedness, only to social awkwardness.
edit:
Also, I play MMOs to escape things like facebook where everyone and their sister always wants something or has some new thing he wants to tell everyone and his mother about. ...
why they think we need all that crap added to the game i dont know.
i still dont use fb, twatter, google+ and it has yet to effect the way i use the internet or play games.
we dont realy need them to play games, and who needs to let 1000 "friends" that you've never even met or spoken to irl know what your doing in games? i'd think this was an invasion of your privacy if it was compulsary to use them in the game.
come to think of it, i have spygle blocked on my browser to try to stop it tracking every web site i visit, wonder if could use something like ghostry or noscript to keep it blocked in a game and if you dont use fb and twatter etc would you still be able to play the game without having an account with those sites?
Stopped using FB when I realised they wanted automatic ownership of my social life.
Personally, I think this game is going to be hyped up so much, that when it arrives its just going to be a huge dissappointment. The only thing that made the single player games great were the modding community who quite frankly fixed half the crap in the vanilla versions.
Its been thier saving grace for many years that they provided the dev tools. MMO'ing a single player game will be thier un-doing.
As for player housing, they have never put anything even remotely good in the single playergames, as mentioned above, its the modders who fix/improve that kind of content.
LoL the first mmo that uses facebook, and all. Hey eq2 does that, as well as all soe products. Just saying that is nothing new, or nothing to write home about.
So basically ill be out owning Bandits at a Bandit Camp and have to stop every 3 seconds to poke all the females back on my Friends list who keep poking a cracka? Sweet!
..and by females i mean "fatties"
..and by owning i mean dying repeatedly like a noob
Can't really debate the logic behind them doing this. Avoiding making people craft their social experience around technically a new social site (albit in game guild). Let'em meet up and find one another via exisiting tools. Saves time and money.
I do, since the beta, and I have no idea what are you talking about... I don't use any of those social crap, and I never get any "urge" from the game to use it either. There was a Secret War event, which was some fb s**t but with no real influence in the game (as I heard maybe they got some in-game outfit? not sure)
As others said already, this is just cheap. If they already had a great game, and then'd say:
-and in our free time as an addition we put in all the social bs, so "the connection to those two social networks, along with others such as Google+, will likely drive ESO into being one of the first MMOs that you can feel a part of even when you’re not at your PC or laptop" people probably would say, who cares, we won't use that anyways. But that's not the case, and they find this crap important? lol.
I just hope they won't go as far as Family Guy did (which is already gone, although not becasue the f**kbook integration )
Originally posted by bigsmiff I am one of those that likes these features. Being able to post achievements, keep up with guild activities on the sites I visit a lot anyway and quick access to guides, is a win win for me. People complain that all MMO's are the same, so why not cheer for new features. Besides, I don't think you will be forced to use them if you don't like it.
Interesting how Firor is spending Dev resources to integrate "Out of Game" Social Features to TESO, but when it comes to "In Game" Social Features like Housing and/or Player Cities its "Too Hard"
Its also going to be funny when some guild loses a Relic Raid....sorry.....Scroll Raid because the Healer was sending a Tweet.

TES's success was in great part because it was a single player sandbox. People, of course, thought "Wouldn't it be great if we could have this, but online?"... And TESO was born - the modern day's UO! It won't actually have any sandbox features besides "exploration"? Social media integration has higher priority than player housing? That sounds exactly what TES fans want!
Every annoucement so far hints this game will fail miserably...

Leave it in game where it belongs.

lol.
Every single bit of information that we get is completely the opposite of what we want/expected.

i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.
Whats your excuse?

They can't add housing but they can add facebook and twitter? oh... great....
Really most players care about gameplay features not social stuff.
Stopped using FB when I realised they wanted automatic ownership of my social life.

The Secret World is socially connected...
That is all.
I'm a unique and beautiful snowflake.

Thats a huge step backwards IMHO.
Gameplay is what they should focus on. Fire the person WHO thought this "brillant" scheme up.
How weird is this statement coming from intelligent people?
123rd!
And I don't play that one either.
