Using the cash shop to eliminate sub fees

It's a tricky balance.  Offering players something that they'd want so much they'd pay real cash for.

Obviously it should never be B2W.  Exp boosts are fine, in fact I highly approve of that because it gives non-grinders like myself an alternative to incessant grinding.

I think the best balance is to make cash shop cosmetic gear/status symbols purchasable via cash shop while also making the same items extremely rare random tradeskill and world loot drops.

What we all want is customization.  We want to tailor our character to look exactly how we want or to look completely different from everybody else.  We want the coolest armor, the best looking weapons, the fanciest house, etc.

It's amazing how long it's taken for MMO developers to put in systems to let US, the players, decide which armors we like, which weapons we think look good, etc.  We used to be slaves to stats and wear the goofiest crap just because of the stat bonuses.

So future and current MMO developers, fire up the texture kennel and model forge and give us the look we're willing to pay for or suffer the consequences of requiring a sub fee!

This would like a word with you. http://www.slideshare.net/bcousins/paying-to-win#postComment Also, I highly recommend you take a look at the "favorite" list.

I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.

To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance.

Cash shops were introduced to raise money, not to eliminate anything. The rise of a sub in cash shop games is hardly surprising, a company found more ways to make money and did.

Actually, early MMOs had far more gear choices and customization. Over time, MMO devs left that out and the players said nothing.

It's not that they've taken a long time to put it in, it's that they now see you will pay for it, so it's worth their time to do it again.
