I WANT MY SANDBOX

Getting really impatient for my MMO fix and I'm sick of the trash out there.

Where is a good medieval fantasy sandbox?  Heck, I'll take any genre of a true sandbox or like 80% sandbox.

Sigh.

In regards to your thread title, Dont we all?

ATM nothing really on the market that is everything a sandbox fan wanst...at least not up to date.

If you dont mind graphics try out Istaria, Ultima Online, Asherons call (AC2 is also back now).

Here is a list of so called sandboxes i have tried followed by a few words describing them:

Mortal Online: OK sandbox, lack of accomplishment and content but good skill system and you can do what you want....but the bugs and overall stability/balance is poor at best, but F2p with 60 cap on skills which means you cant really do anything substantial with trial.

Xyson: dead game but really nice crafting, lots of bugs, horrible combat.

Wurm: Lots of options a real do it yourself MMO...with no animations, diversity or decent graphics.

Darkfall: All about pvp and it does it well, downfalls are stability/performance, community and sandbox content.

Wushu: called a sandbox but its a pathetic excuse for one.

    Eve: Repetitive and boring.

Those are the newer games ive tried and all are a bust all the sandbox fans can do atm is play the oldies or wait for something to hit, i had high hopes with DFUW but it seems that is further from a sandbox thats its predecessor.

But if you find one, let me know lol.

I played UO and AC back in the day.  I really liked them both, but I am hoping for a higher level of sandbox for my next MMO fix.

I'll probably play the next Darkfall until something else comes out.

As the old saying goes, 'Don't piss in my sandbox, I won't piss in yours.'

I am kind of sick of people whining about this topic - it seems nothing is ever good enough for them. You get one, you get one - you don't OH well - play something else.

That is ultimately the problem with sandbox players, right? They envision a game that will never come out because those sandbox features are expensive to develop and there isn't enough players to justify that expense. Wosre is there are dozens of indie sandbox games all doing their own thing and dividing the limited amount of funding available because there's no consensus on what sandbox features each individual wants.

There is not one single new (as in last 3 years) sandbox game out there at the moment.

And as of yet, no one has released what I'd consider an AAA tile since Eve.

People who want a sandbox should just play Minecraft for now, possibly on one of the RPG servers (like Herocraft).

EDIT: Not saying we shouldn't expect sandboxes, but it's gonna be a long wait.

A true sandbox MMO AAA title would cost less than a Themepark AAA title.

But you are right, they are splitting funding.  I have yet to see a developer with the vision and the expertise to put forward the type of Sandbox that I think would be popular.

I have no clue why everyone is avoiding the obvious genre for a Sandbox:  fantasy/medieval.  It has the largest base by far and has the most roleplayers.

It is not that difficult.  Unfortunately I don't think the industry attracts enough bright people.

If your view of sandbox is featureless, then yes, a sandbox MMO would cost less than a themepark. However, it is far more expensive to develop sandbox systems that will interact with other sandbox systems and trying to get the bugs out of those than it is to create themepark features.

True to an extent, but some of the truth is in how most MMOs diverted from the RPG in MMORPG content and in turn created Story line quest based games with most importantly End game, caps, linear content and lack of diversity. I have played some of the big MMO's such as WoW, LOTRO, EQ, Eve, but never really felt immersed in the world or player lore, it just seems like those style games are a short lived value of enjoyment....for me.

I had played Darkfall since its NA server launch, few months of Mortal, Wurm and Xyson and I always felt like they were all missing something (definitely not bugs) And every one left me stating things like "If only Xyson had darkfalls combat and siege systems" or If only Darkfall had Mortal Online's depth and grind-less outlook".

But a few companies have realized that there is a big audience for Sandbox fans and its growing as lately in the last 6-8 years MMO gamers have been dished out games that carry a new story line within the same old format. We have the promises of SOE and their EQ3 Sandbox, Pathfinder Online, The Repopulation, Embers of Caerus, Titan (if its actually in the works) etc. The sandbox front as always has hope and its good to see some of the larger developers are taking the reins and will hopefully create a game that has no boundaries on playstyle or game play.

Ultima Online, Wurm, Mabinogi, Wakfu, Eve - those are the ones I recommend. Could play either of them long term and be fine with it.

There is Mortal Online, not sure I would reccommend it as they think sandbox means you must have open world pvp and nudity. :)

...and they probably never will. Even Eve didn't release AAA. It was mess in the bbeginning oh Salem isn't AAA but it is new and really really sandy. But I'm sure you would find something wrong with it as we'll :).   I'm thinking the peeps who make these sort of threads won't ever be happy

I think you are going have to compromise and look for a hybrid which has sandbox features with minimal themepark.

What features are you looking for?

I think the idea of "sandbox" style games being more expensive to make might be a bit specious.  Yes, it creates some unique challenges, but it can also reduces costs in some other areas, like script-writing and class balancing.

Keeping my fingers crossed for Trials of Ascension to make the grade, but could be a wait.  Good forum community emerging in the meantime if you feel like checking it out, gamesrfun.  You'll find likeminded folks.

Greed Monger and Origins of Malu are the only two I see with any promise, but they are still in development.

Get a couple of friends to buy Minecraft. Mod minecraft to your liking and there you go. There are huge mods and great looking texturepacks.

Modded minecraft trumps any sandbox atm. Even Wurm Online.

Of course, a big part of the problem is that some peopel are insisant that it's not really a sandbox if they cannot make other players play in urine-soaked sand.
