rathmarathma Member UncommonPosts: 3,786
Is EQ worth buying? I need a game to hold off a couple of months 'till EQII or WoW. If there is another game you think i would like post it. (BTW i'm into interesting worlds, fantasy, fun quests and fighting)

DAoC held my attention for 2 years where as AC2 held my attention for 6 days... getting advice from everyone is fine, but your play style might be different than everyone elses. just read up on the games and decide which you think sounds more fun.

I am known to be a big EQ fan.

I retired at level 60 a shadowknight and a rogue this was just 2 weeks after they added the level 65 thing.

Now like I said great game and a must to try if this was 2000.

Its graphics have been updated and is about same as DAoC and pretty ok .

However this game is totally unfriendly for a new player.

Unlike before the crowd to play with are much fewer at low levels and even back in 2000 it took over an hour to find group with so many low levels running around.

So basicallyyou can sit down looking for a group for hours and log off .

You can try the handful of classes that can solo but it will limit you to just a few.

Also you have to realise it takes ages to get to a descent level to hunt the big monsters/loot at which time horizons would be here for sure(oct 2003).

Even if you want to keep playing till lets say early next year or above  you must have a lot of time and i mean lots of time to hunt those big mobs.

Right now for life of me I cannot imagine why I sat down 3 hours to break to a point near the big monster then 2 hours to buff then attack and die in a few minutes.Take another 2 hours to fight for a few minutes again.

Honestly its like that at high end of game

My weird suggestion is go play planetside if you like first person shooter or star wars galaxies if you are ok with space.

If you want medival fantasy setting go with DAoC.

DAoC can keep you happy for a few months for sure and is more newbie friendly by a mile and less of a time sink.

Watch out for horizons coming out in oct of this year ,you might not even want to see EQ2 after that .I would be shocked if it does not turn out to be a great game.

I had a great time in EQ and unlike many who ranted people are no life and they suddenly discovered sunlight lol I left quietly.

Was a gradual thing I just logged in less and less till I was gone.

It really is a nice game and I hope horizons can keep to their promise and actually make the EQ experience was it was in the beginning.

The chance of playing a dragon is very tempting but you do see a few rip off in the game there is a race called ssik(mispelled i know) who are basically iksar(lizard people).

There is a cat like race .

There is orges but they call them half  giants hehe.

They scrapped the underwater continent and the underwater race though.

Still worth looking at it if you never heard about it before.

For me it's basically either EQ or DAoC. What game would i have to put less time into since im only playing till EQ2 comes out.

Well that kind of makes it easier.

Time wise DAoC you will gain levels faster and be there much sooner.

Now PvE DAoC is not as good as EQ.

However you will find groups easier and can log on and solo in DAoC.

It has 50 levels and at 50 you can go and PvP with the big boys .

Before this there is even lower level PvP to do.

This is a fun part of DAoC because its PvP without any grief.

Also since its for a short period only I think you will not get bored .

  • livelyclivelyc Member Posts: 110
daoc i didnt like it too much , felt like monsters were extremely unoriginal , and that they never changed , they just got bigger and became named something else.  who wants to be level 40 and fighting deer....... i mean come on heh . Realm vs realm was cool in that game but personally id prefer eq if i was choosing between the two just cause eq was better at cooperation with other players and stuff and monsters were cool

DAoC is a game trying to strike a balance between PvE and PvP.

DAoC mobs compared to EQ are lame the quest are boring compared to EQ world is small compared to EQ.

In short the only place in PvE it beats EQ is the tradeskills which are actually useful and certainly worth having.

But its RvR is definately one to do for sure.Yes some will say oh it gets boring after a while but we are the folks that played it for a while. For a few months it is great to play.

EQ is a much better game imo, and i played EQ in 2001 and you could find a group easy. Played it for about 3 months, as where i dumped DAoC after the free month was up. Although EQ losing exp when dieing got annoying, and frustrating, DAoC did the same thing on a less sever level. IMO DAoC didnt have enough content, i'd go with EQ.

Epic quest in EQ are an increasing pain to get.

Simply because mid range guilds that bother to do epic fights for people are now having a waiting period before doing so i even heard that one guild on xegony has a 6 month wait period .

Reason been most people epic and move to raid only guilds that do big monsters as those guilds do not do epics.

Many of the old quest are rarely done nowadays too and those were the fun ones.

High end quest are basically camping forever  or kill a big monster which you have to wait your turn to get the things you need.

The old magic and role playing of EQ has long gone and been replaced by loot whores.

With all the changes to EQ latley I would say go for EQ if you want something to spend time on until another game comes out.It is not hard to lvl in EQ if you have a decient head on your shoulders,do some research and learn the best places to hunt.

If you go the EQ route chose a receintly new server since that will give you more of a chance of finding a group, but even then I dont think you will have much trouble finding a group if you go to the right places.

I guess it is all in what you are looking for.You dont have to spend a butt load of time trying to get to the high lvls to fight the higher lvl mobs if you just want a game to hold you over till something better.EQ has implemented (if you have the expansions) alot of low-mid lvl zones in which to hunt in and they have redone the exp allotment in groups.

    Up to you tho.

EverQuest isnt worth your time anymore.  The game is no longer Newb friendly... Most of the starting places are deserted as I've heard.  All the new Expansions have thrown the people for a loop, moving them far from the newb zones.

It all started with the Bazaar and then Plains of Power.. it went down hill from there.

The game is great if you have a charecter over lvl 50...  but, if you can get a group of friends to go w/you then the game is a sure bet.

killerTwinkie is right i play EverQuest atm and i feel the same ever sice pop came out. If i was you get Shadowbane play that have some fun and then get World of Warcraft when it comes out. Stuff eq2 off man. Eq2 aint going to be worth it. If you don't want WoW go for Horizons or Dragon Empires they would be alot better than eq2.

    Games I Play:

    Quake Live
    Track Mania Nations Forever
    Runes of Magic

Do not, i repeat do not, get Shadowbane, that has to be the worse game ever. Really dissapointing considering I love PvP games. If you fancy monster killing and quest's, go EQ2, if you fancy PvP and the sort, go Lineage 2, or dragon empires.

    Have to second that.

Shadowbane made me lose faith in mmrpg.Very poorly made game .Bad enough it looks like a game out of  1999 it is plain boring.

A popular arguement is that shadowbane been in production for so long its graphics is bound to be bad.I point to the soon to be released horizons that has been in make since 1998(go to website and see, they have revamped the whole engine and it looks great.if you did not know it been in make so long you would think it is third generation game).

Shadowbane needed to keep the fps low for large scale battle is another arguement.Hmm still lags even when no one is around you on a top spec computer.Plus planetside seems to be able to put over 200 people fighting over one base and the graphics is quite good and almost no lag.

Quite simply shadowbane was poorly programmed .Add to fact the developers had no concept of what to actually put in game makes  it a rather boring gameplay.

Really a poor excuse of a mmrpg.

I just started DAoC last night and its ok, but I'm not particularly impressed.  I've been trying to figure out what to do while i waited for Horizons to come out and I finally broke down and bought the Gold edition of DAoC.  It comes with the expansion pack Shrouded Island.  Now I've only played for 5 hours or so, but I had lots of trouble grouping and fought only 3 types of monsters (marine fungus, small cats and these elf like creatures).  Hopefully it gets better as I increase in level (im only a level 4 Dwarf Viking) but so far I can't recommend it at all.

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

i "third it" do NOT get shadowbane.

But truly DAoC is good for about 15 days. I ditched it after 14 days...

Actually, IMO, not only did I like the horizons old idea, and hate the new one, but I actually think the old graphics were better, they had more potential, more of a realistic look. As for the graphics now have that type of cartoonish almost look.
