The OP makes it sound like the only thing to do in EvE is to command a Corporation, or somehow be one of the 'elite'. The most fun I've had in EvE was getting hold of a Prowler and taking those 'impossible' contracts into nullsec, taking hours to avoid the gate campers, and deliver that package that the contractor never expected to be delivered at all.
There's lots of things to do in that game... and the great thing about a sandbox is, you can go do whatever you feel like doing. You might discover you are running like hell with half your ship spiralling off behind you but hey, nothing stopping you from going through that wornhole.
Overall when I play, whatever I decide to do, I have fun. But, then I've never actually wanted to be one of the top guys.
So set your sights lower? You will never catch up with anyone who started before you as long as you are both subscribing. Thats just reality. You don't need to be leading that 100 person fleet to have fun. Is it wrong to want to do that? Lord no. Thats the thing. Set reasonable, manageable goals. Those "big boys" as you called them started exactly where you are now. With no money and no skills. My account is only 1.5 years old but I can fly exhumers, have nearly perfect refine, I can fly t2 tanked battleships. Thats not much but its what I decided to skill for. Now working on manufacturing. You don't need to be the best. You just need to choose what you want to do, work toward it, and have some fun along the way.

The game will take you 2 years to play before you can actively participate in null security space. Anything less than this and you will die on a regular basis. You lose your ship and possibly game time from death encounters. Unless you spend a lot of time 'farming' for replacement ISK(currency) you will have to buy PLEX to support your gaming lifestyle. The numbers speak for themselves. This game could be in contention against World of Warcraft but the developers do not see the big picture. To me this is called, "denial". Tell the game developers you do not approve of this by not playing EVE Online. Stay away from this game. Otherwise, you will spend most of your time developing your character. If you do not mind waiting for about 2 years to play effectvely, then go for it. I plan to do so but I realize as well that it will take me forever before I can play with the Big Boys.
No i dont think so. This game could never be in contention with WoW. if i would chose between those two i would play WoW. EVE carters only a special kind of people. Im not quite sure what kind they are that are fascinated by this game, but im pretty sure they are strange, even in real life.
get a trial account and try to find a noob friendly corp immidiately.... then make your own decision
I believe I may have started the proper 'denial of service' to EVE Online. Gamers should never have to 'waste' their time. I do not mind playing for awhile in order to get with the rest of the pack. My objection from the get-go is the inhumane time to play with the big boys.
A new player will never ever become a Fleet Commander of 100 ships or more without the skill points to back him up. That is not going to happen within a 2 year time frame.
FYI, if you have the intelligence to learn the market well you can use this to 'buy' a premade character. It is not a stretch of truth to say an individual could make as much as 500,000 ISK per day playing the market. Beware though CCP may look into how you make your funds if you do make that much per day. Any character in the game can make an estimated 8-10 Billion ISK per month.
thank you
What you want is to play EVE but without everything that actually makes EVE what it is... EVE without skills to train for long periods just isn't right and it would just crash the perception of eve completley.
If you start as a new player nad then in 2 months you have a Titan, and you don't even know 10% of the games mechanics then what's the point of having that Titan anyways if you can't even use it to full potential? Yeah, it certanly looks awesome but besides that there's not much you can do with it because you have no clue what it's potentials are and what could get you to a disadvantage to someone and make you loose your titan.
A new player shouldn't even be able to become a fleet commander of 100 ships or more because he has no clue what's he supposed to do... Those players who actually are fleet commanders and have all sorts of buffs - they got it because they're playing the game for long and they probably know what they're doing and can read the information that game gives him better than most people can, that's why he is a fleet commander... That's something a new player can not do. New players are so lost for the first year that they don't even know all the basic stuff, because that's how huge EVE is. There's always alot to learn and it NEVER EVER STOPS! It's a good thing that eve prevents people from fyling everything in short period, makes you actually learn things gradually as you advance your skills...
You're always refering to "playing with big boys"... I think even if you'd have all the trained skills neceseray to actually join a huge fleet, in short period of time, and do some PVP you'd die anyways because again, you'd have no clue what you're doing and what you're supposed to do. So what would be the purpose of being able to go for the best and biggest ships if you'd end up loosing them anyways. After you'd finally realise it's pointless to do it you'd perhaps return to the high sec and learn the game step by step and it would again, take you months and years...
You can't expect to play on a level you yet do not understand and since EVE is huge and has so much stuff to learn it's to be expected that you'd actually have to dedicate alot of time to learning before you join up on something bigger in game.
Playing the market, it's just a lie... They won't check you because it's not exploiting anything and you're just using your common sence to buy low and sell high. Vets can get 30+ mill ISK in an hour while running missions only, not to mention if you actually use the market to get more ISK out of it.
Just a question to ask yourself in the end... If let's say, another MMORPG themepark is that big and has so much informations and so much content to do and enables you do activley change the world in which you are with really complex mechanics. Would you expect that it offers you a max lvl character and every high-end gear allready in your inventory just to enable you to instantly play "the end game" ?
You wouldn't understand a thing about it and you'd have no idea what to do, but you'd have everything unlocked and ready to go. Yeah, it's a lot faster but would you want to play a game which does that?

I played EVE for more than six years and met many amazing people and had the most incredible gaming experience I've had in 28 years of gaming with that gem.
Still, though, this statement had me laughing my butt off. Thanks for that

Back to the OP, but I have tried Eve and kind of like the idea of it. The reason I have quit is that it just seems an insurmountable obstacle (given the free time I have) to catch up and become competitive with older toons.
If, and I repeat, if you ever decide to play EVE, this is the corporation/alliance you want to be joined with.
As a new player, I decided to go against all of the negative propaganda I kept hearing about the Goons. I am sure you get an idea from the responses PRO and CON on just the post. Once joined, I could only fly ships I could fit according to their requirements. No problem, but a new player is extremely limited in his choices. Hence, my frustrated arguments about the skill plan needed to play in this sandbox.
Sorry, I feel like if I should have to explain what a 'bee' is then I lose to an obvious troll. :-)
The politics of EVE is what keeps me in the game. Not the game mechanics and obviously NOT levelling up your training requirements. The market is not my cup of tea either. I have played MMOs in the past where I spent tons of time making the game equivalent of money. I choose a long time ago to just play the game everything else will fall into place.
If you want to see what a bunch of noobies can do in the game, come to Aldrat starting today. Watch 4 corporations wardec EVE University and see who wins or loses.
I just started Eve a couple of days ago. I am having a good time playing it. I had originally considered it when it came out but I was also very into SWG as it was a new game for me, I had played Earth and Beyond for a bit and otherwise had no MMO experience. Ultimately I played SWG for many years and really enjoyed the community and friendships formed. That was a great time for me.
I tried SWTOR for the past year and finally gave up on them with this latest patch. I knew it but kept hoping otherwise that they might get the understanding of a War within Star Wars. Alas, they never will it seems. Game mechanics do not support factional pride and anyone can flip flop to the other side so even if there was something worth fighting for and winning besides the stupid no effect warzones, the losing side would just hop on their alts to play on the winning side. Overall the game was too childlike for me. And yeah you could flip in SWG but you did not just stand around waiting on a que to pop, there was pvp on ground in many cities at times and in space (something I worked on in storylines, etc.). I di not find SWG so mind numbing as end game became in SWTOR.
In Eve (thus far) I feel challenged again and the process of determining my path to be whatever is appealing. Anything can change in time of course but for now I am enjoying the journey. Peace.
From a perspective, you are correct OP. The ingredient you miss is, even after 5 years and 100 mill SP you still won't be formidable. 6 guys on a gate can still Jam, scram and melt your ship in T1 junk with 2 mill SP Each.
EVE is a gank based game. That never changes. If that isn't what you look for in an MMO then EVE is not for you. Some see the fleet drive as the better aspect of EVE. some don't. But it is what EVE is about. You try and solo it you will be miserable. It's very possible to accumulate tens of billions solo. You will still lose it in fights you have no chance of winning if you remain solo.
What it sounds like to me is that you made your account around 2 years ago and just now decided to pay the sub. You got pissed off because you can't instantly start pvping in null sec so you decided to make a flame thread..
It WILL take you quite some time to "catch up" however there are very cheap, effective builds you can run with to support a corp. Telling people not to play a game because you couldn't work the game to your angle and be carebear promoted is kind of silly though. I think anyone with even an idea of what they're getting into with EVE should expect quite a time investment. However participation is not depending on a 2 year prohibition. Don't expect to be a major player though, be realistic.
The poster is absolutely right, new players come in at such a disadvantage they quit very soon, god knows my corp has seen many leaves.
Your corp sucks at supporting new players then.
I can see why you may think that it is a corporation or even the communities responsibility to provide encouragement and feedback to the new player but it is not.
It is common knowledge that EVE Online does not have enough 'content' to keep players happy. Once you get past the warping to stargate to stargate, fighting NPCs of little value, doing missions, playing the market, mining, manufacturing, and all other categories :-) your pretty much left with boredom.
It is on record that CCP considered new players as cannon fodder for the experienced players. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know that the consumer will not put up with this kind of treatment. The EVE gamer is much more intelligent than your average XBox player. I make this reference because it seems CCP is trying to draw the XBox crowd to their game in hopes of it bolstering the subscription ranks.
There are many issues of EVE Online that I have not touched upon. The problem goes beyond my original topic about skill requirements. EVE can be the most player intensive game in the history of gaming. It already has a steep learning curve. Once you get past the basics of this game it becomes boring. Granted if your play style means you are satisfied with manufacturing, mining, and trading then EVE is probably your game.
Well, coffee is waiting for me. Starting another new day. I am confident CCP will address these issues. The player advocates known as 'CSM's will do a good job of informing CCP what we need. Until then, I will not recommend this game to others. Word of mouth is a powerful tool.
The Original Post is funny as heck. To our OP, are you being for real serious? The difference between WOW and EVE. WOW causes CANCER. EVE is the cure for it! :-D
You can be very viable in 0,0 after about 6 months of gameplay. Specialization does wonders! Perhaps finding a good corp or alliance is what you need. The good ones help and support fledgling EVE players.
Sounds like you got jumped and are now crying about it while looking for attention. I was roaming around null sec in about 5 months with semi descent frigate skills. You don't need every skill to be lvl 5 to get kills and get missoins done just a working braincell and a set of eyeballs. I bet you didn't even do the tutorial missions or look up any of the vids made by EvE University.
Besides, there are other ways to rule in the game without having to PvP also. Got one toon that spits out Tech II ships like a gatling gun and makes a killing on the market. Ever think of that stuff or do you just cry that you lost a ship?

Like it matters if you're a new or an old player. Yes, old players know the game better and you stand no chance against them with your crappy ship, no skills and no knowledge. But if you ask enough questions and get interested, learn what you can about the game - then you're pretty much on a good path to become a good player and fight those old players (ofc, after few months, when you get your skills sorted and etc.).
