Random Name Generator is useless

superniceguysuperniceguy Member UncommonPosts: 2,278

I click the random name option, and it brings up cool names, and I think this is great, but then it not available. image

Trying to a get a name takes ages, about 20 odd tries before the game accepted a valid name. Once it even generated one that was inappropriate!

I never had this problem in SWG, SOE coded it so that it would scan names that were taken or inappropriate, and then if it was it would keep randomly generating a name until one was available to use and pop it up.

I assume this has been broke since launch, but with F2P and less servers, names are getting harder and harder to choose.

It is a valid complaint as it took 10 mins just choose a name, that is ridiculous, it is getting worse and worse.  If that is broke, it does not get the game off to a good start for people who have not played it before, people will then wonder what else is broke

STO or perfect world games do not have this issue as your name is tied to your account. eg charname@account name

This will probably be fixed soon, by putting a working name generator in the Cartel Market. It might even be in there already actually

I don't know OP, by looking at your avatar I think I can safely assume you might be a little biased when it comes to Star Wars MMOs. Also, I didn't even know people used the random name generator in any game ever.

Since the servers also got consolidated, rougly 10 down to 1, all those millions of unused characters from accounts long expired hog character names.  I think the only way to bump an unused name was to be apart of the character merge.

I never had good luck getting an agreeable random name though, in this or any game.  It's worse when you come up with your own unique names, something you can't consider anyone else wanting, like oh say, Shoughlagway or Lenodrousi, and they are taken as well!  Amazing, lol.

I think some of those filters were added after the random name generator was made, since some letter combinations were later found to be sketchy as time went on.  Bigpenis would be obvious, but less obvious later down the road might be bigpnes, deepbung, atstycrootch.  Downside is that quality names like cassholem or cabjonmeleia might get blocked too, or even less innoculous ones like bacumda. :-)

What I tend to do is use the Random Name generator and it gives me an idea of what to name it, and maybe add in a few letters to make it more real. However in SWTOR the names that pop up are so cool already that it needs no amending until you try and use it, and then it says it is taken. SOEs gives a useable name each time, but is like chutuiem or something weird, I would probably then try Chutreem . I just basically keep clicking until I see something I can use that fits with what I use.

In SWTOR, to honour SWG, I try and think up names using those letters. Ashrowgoon or something, but if I can not think of anything I see what the random name generator pops up

I think they just have a pool of names, and is not even a random name generator, like they have y amount of names then it randomly generates a number between 1 and y and then picks a name at that value.

Unfortunately, it's a limitation of every game with a random generator.

The random generator works off a set of rules for letter combinations (so you don't get completely random strings of characters like just mashing on your keyboard to pick a name).

Eventually a significant portion of the allowable names (even if the max was a million combinations) gets taken.  Better rules allow for more name possibilities - and some games are better at this than others.

Worse are the games where if you do enough random name generations you start seeing repeats.

    Yes, had that with SWTORs

I am not really fussed with getting stupid names as can rejig it to suit my needs, but SWTORs is the first I have used where it gives me names already in use, over and over and over.
