not sure how reliable this information is: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/80724-bye-orange-swords/
but apparently the quote is:
Colin: Orange swords in WvW won’t show if there are less than ~25 people after February’s update (unsure exact number)
seems to be getting positive feedback so far, although I haven't read through all the comments yet. thoughts?

Is 25 a large group in WvW?
No it is not - but all groups no matter what size were shown on the map with Orange swords.
This is possibly a good counter to the 'zerg' nature of WvW right now.
It forces players to have scouts and to have small battles rather than one giant deathball that goes around all the swords and kills everything.
It will mean players will have to co-ordinate.
Seeing some of the more 'hardcore' WvW who were not exactly the most welcoming to new players could be an issue.

I dont know about this....
A group of 5 can put up two guild catapults and tear down a wall quickly (enemy must see white swords then find the enemy). For a group of five to tear down the walls of an unupgraded tower take approx 4 minutes if not seen. No swords will be displayed for less than ~ 25 players? Thats gonna be a bit dangerous.
I guess this is Anets answer to the percieved zerg problem. This will force groups to split up and have a higher emphasis on scouts.
IMO, zergs werent a big issue in T1 as smaller groups were favored by more organized servers/guilds. I dont know much about the other tiers.
IIRC, orange swords showed when 6 or more players were engaged in combat.
I often would be in a group of 5 and we would not put swords on the map. Even in a group of ten, if only a select number of people fought a mob or player.....swords would not show on the map. White swords are the exception.
Unless the white swords are gone it wont really mean much sadly. Well it will allow zergs to split up and do multiple objectives at once without putting a beacon on their asses^^
I think though white swords will be the new oragne, although you can tirck the enemy with that. We will see what it leads to. Hopefully more tactics involved rather than just zerging the orange swords.
Will have to be more changes than this to make WvW shine though.
I think you are absolutely right. This will force all players to learn how to scour each tower/keep/garrison for attackers.
The unorganized will send entire groups to check out white swords, otherwise occupying forces that could be used elsewhere.
The other consequence we havent looked into is the need for more commanders per map. With the zergs broken up, I predict you will see organized servers having a commander per quadrant of the map (atleast 4 commanders per map for those with a GED).
I agree it is better if the action is spread up and there are more fights going on at several times.
But I still want big armies.
Never understood what is the point of wanting to be in war and then fight duels or small actions all the time.
Sieges involved maasive armies.
I think to change how it is played there will be the need for different scoring systems with long term and short term effects. <apparently Anet is working in this as well.
Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders
i'd wait for next month see what they add as next month is supposed to be heavy on WvW updates
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
So what would make it meaningful?
What would be the consequences for the winner side and the loser side?

Fair enough, but it really needs alot of changes for me to get excited. I just can t get into it, at all. I want a true relic system, reason for taking keeps other then numbers under my server name, land control for purpose, other then to leave WvW area, and forget it even exists. I just stopped playing WvW entirely, and casually play GW2 in general now, if at all, as it s losing it appeal alot. i hope they improve WvW, but with other games coming with better sounding systems(to me), I think I ll shelve the game entirely. It just doesn t do it for me at all. We shall see.

haven't seen anything concrete but march update is supposed to have some sort of progression system added on, they talked about new title system as well, also WvW specific skills and such.. will have to wait till next month to see though.. they said one of the main goals was to make WvW much more rewarding as a whole

Someone put it quite nicely (supposedly trying to paint it badly) - a week long basketball match with your friends.
You dont cry when they score and youre happy when you score, you try to play best you can, its fast paced, easy to get in and out and in the end its all pointless beside having fun doing it and spend time with friends.
