rooting is what kills it for me as far as ranged classes... in action games nothing i hate more than ranged rooting.. its one of the main reasons I never play ranged classes in diablo games.. wouldn't even care if it was slow walking while casting so i could peddle around a little bit or do a little back peddling
Same. It's really discouraging to hear that. I love a good run n' gun class myself. That's what killed TERA for me.
The Secret World did it perfectly. You can use ranged skills while moving, but you just walked instead of ran during casted abilities.
You can see in the video that the character is walking and casting spells (probably the basic ones). More advanced spells root you in place, but that's probably a design decision to make it more balanced.
Rooting is easier to write for, and easier to balance. Who's going to fear you if you can run backwards while shooting? Though I admit, Guild Wars 2 did it well (then again, your attack buttons weren't the mouse buttons, it was the keyboard keys). Also, it seems that there are 4 Archetypes, and classes between them.
Fighter has Guardian Fighter and Great Weapon Fighter (Tank and DPS)
Rogue has Trickster Rogue (So far DPS)
Wizard has Controlling Wizard (Debuffs/Area Control)
Clerics have Devoted Cleric (Healing/Debuffs)
It looks like, with this formula, they'll be releasing classes focused around Defensive, Offensive, and Support. We could see Rogues that can debuff foes or focus on swift counter attacks, a Fighter than bellows out commands that buff, a Sorcer that drops the angry wrath of the elemental planes on people's heads, and a Cleric that focused as a Warpriest or Paladin.
Then again, they could just rename all the characters accordingly, IE, Great Weapon Fighter becomes Barbarian, give the fighter a Paragon Path focusing on Two Handers (and use the Great Weapon to block), and then easily put in the other classes, having only Paragon paths seperating them, as well as ability choices.
Still, if they didn't have names unique to the game, it'd not generate results for their game in a search engine. So I can kinda see the point in why they're named as such. Still, my hope is they'll either take a 2nd look over the game, have it so awesome we won't care, or make an expansion that gets it right if they mess up.
I just wish I had a key, then I could at least be able to tell if they got it right in the first place.
Neverwinter Online is based on D&D's 4th edition ruleset, which has classes grouped into roles.
Controllers: (Control Wiz)
Defenders: (Guardian)
Leaders: (Devoted Cleric)
Strikers: (Trickster Rogue/GWF)
PW have stated that additional classes are going to be added shortly after launch (Everyones favourites in forums are being ranger (either bow or dual wield - but bow most likely as there has been hints by devs and in videos), sorcs or Warleaders (warrior leader type)), as they have stated that additional races will be added as well, (Drow is going to become available, as is Dragonborn) shortly after launch.
The forums have also had rumours that weapon and armor designs are going to be improved. And there was even a hint that one of the forum devs, who happens to love his GWF wielding a scythe was told that his favourite impliment of death and horror might be added.
So just wait and see. Personally, I was waiting for GWF this beta... I played Guardian in the first beta weekend (my mate played the Cleric) and from what I can tell you about being rooted in combat, it's essential for the Guardian/melee classes. It gives you your tells on what attacks to prepare to block or dodge (yes, ranged can dodge, hold shift or double tap) as well as gives you a satisfying visceral feel to hammering an encounter or daily skill into action!
If you're thinking of playing a Control Wizard, stock up on health potions, get a Tank or Cleric companion when soloing and team up whenever you can. For the first time, it seems that Cryptic is aiming at creating an MMO that requires playing (nicely) together a few levels after the tutorial! And I hope NWO stays this way.
Ummm no. Getting the Faclon or the Wizard companion for my pet Moar damage = less fighting
First time my life time sub to a Cryptic game makes me smile. I am looking forward to seeing if this game lives up to the hype. Wife and I will be putting in some heavy game time come March =-) Missing the trinity playing GW2 so little excited to play roles that matter again!!!

I'm not sure what's the issue here.
that is an older video.. the skill in the cleric video where he is back peddling now roots you in the game... i haven't found any ranged skills yet that can be channeled while moving
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
ray of frost? looks more like "poor desgigned line" of cyan....
True but to be fair, this video is not at all new. It's like 4 months old which means it's probably an early alpha footage or smth.
This is true, I walked into the first beta weekend thinking the graphics are gonna blow, as almost all of the gameplay videos we have seen released shows it as being this way. But actual in game, the graphic and animations are superior to what you see in the videos....mostly.
So control wizards are ice-based... meh. Hopefully there'll be other 'lines' of control that can be added later. Like fire. Or Enchanters, or Enchanter-like abilities added; like Mezmerize.
Still - I'm getting pretty excited about this game and.. dammit... this might just be another MMO the wife and I will have to add to our list of "Yeah, we played/play that..."
