Does anyone know if FFXIV has Rank missions like FFXI. Those were some of my favorite times in XI. Or is there anything remotely similar. Or am I way off base hoping this is XI just newer?

There will be Main Quests for each Nation.

There are nation quests, but I would say FFXIV's version of the rank missions from FFXI would be the Grand Companies.

-You can only join 1.

-You rank up within the company (through rank missions) unlocking new equipment/items/encounters etc.

 

Each city has a grand company (but you don't have to be a citizen to join), you can spend points at the guild for equipment and items (potions etc), and will likely be tied to some kind of competition between Grand Companies in the future similar to Conquest. 

 

Not to be confused with Free Companies which are player formed companies and have their own housing options etc.
