I was taking a look at both EQ and EQ2 and according to their respective web site, it seems as though EQ has more active players than EQ2. I was a little takin back with this as EQ is much older. With this said, can someone advise which they think is better and why?

EQ1 is much better. It will never be the same however any more. Early on the game now has a lack of players so you will have to solo early on, but they added mercs you can hire to help you level. Supposedly, higher levels there are groups/raiding.
EQ1 is still the best MMO to ever be released as far as I am concerned. I have yet to find any game that has as good of raid content or a good quest system that basically does not level you up for trivial tasks but rather guides you to potential areas to kill at, or the epic quests which were very difficult and rewarding in their respective times. Also, the game implemented alternative abilities which allowed you from 51+ to still level up. This made it so you could always improve your character. However, almost 14 years later many players have maxxed out on AA's but they still continue to put out expansions, content, gear and more aa's.
EQ2 (the original WoW) is not as good in my opinion. I hate questing to level up, it ruins games.
EQ is by far much more enjoyable than EQ2. Although in its current state it is not even 1/1,000,000,000 the fun it was during the first few years it is still currently more enjoyable than any other MMO currently still available to play right now.
I think just Kunark, Velious and Luclin have more challenging and more raid content than WoW altogether.
they are different games and will appeal to different players
pesonally i prefer EQ2 over EQ but that doesnt mean that EQ2 is better
it is unknown which game has a bigger player population
comparing the facebook challenges SOE ran last summer,
EQ2 players had higher turnouts than EQ for all 4 contests but that doesnt prove anything
try both games

Your post tried to put two cookies from www.imperium-uw.com onto my computer, wtf?
I have been playing eq1 from 1999 till today, and eq2 from 2004 to 2011. In both games I was in the hardcore raiding fraction.
While I preferred eq2 for a long time, the last expansions were a bit weak. That being said, I think eq2 is the "better" choice for playing alts and enjoying the world of Norrath form level 1 to maybe 80. Graphics and UI are still great, gameplay is fine and solo-friendly, lot's of different classes are there, and the lore - both eq-games share a depth that you will never find again in another game.
Today the so-called "end-game" of eq1 with endless character development, interesting group play, socialising and raiding really shines. The community of both games is really friendly and helpful; you will not run into the typical gimme-mmo-kids of nowadays. The graphics are really out-dated, but you can get used to it. Getting into the game and the clunky user interface is tough, though.
Sorry, Nadia, gone are the good days of eq2 when we really wholeheartedly and rightfully could claim that we were playing the best game ever created. The last statistics I have seen have shown that eq1 has overtaken eq2 again in number of players.
Finally, Nadia is of course right, both games are the among best mmorpg's out there, just try both!

Waiting for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
EQ 1 is my favorite mmo I've ever played. The world is huge and you got a bit of wonder exploring it. The music is simple, yet makes the zones memorable. The raids are the best of any mmo I've played. The down side is she's a bit dated. The graphics and user interface, if you are coming from a newer mmo will be difficult.
EQ2, completely different experience for me. Tried to get into it 3 times to no avail. At launch, almost entire guild from eq1 switched over, I lost interest in a couple weeks, these days, most of that guild returned to eq1. 2nd attempt was after a couple expansions, just couldn't get motivated to log in, and 3rd strike was when it went FTP and I was feeling the fantasy genre, that toon is still parked in the woods somewhere...
It's hard for someone that didn't play eq1 early in its days to jump in new, but if you can manage it , it has some of the best gaming memories I ever had.
EQ2 vs Diablo2
there. fixed the title for you.
EQ2 is nothing like EQ1 and comparing them is an insult to the glory years and magic that was Everquest. EQ2 needs to die in a fire, and then have its ashes pissed on by ever race in Norrath.
