And I will state one time and one time only.

    You are an idiot.

This is an INFORMATION website on gaming, not a place to play the games. If you are too young to grasp or understand what the word Information means, Press the CTRL key + W at the same time.

I used to play PVP text MUDS back in the mid 90s e.g. Godwars, so that should make me a natural candiate for PvP MMOGs right? The problem with FFA PvP [Free For All] is that I find that unless PvP has a purpose as a game mechanic, it does attract the worst elements - especially in level based FFA PvP games (instagank).

Unfortunately, due to the explosion of online gaming, you also attract the lamers whose concept of PvP is instagank. I find ganking boring (and yes, I have ganked in a past life) and it gets old quickly. Even narcoleptics can gank if they have a level 60 character with decent EQ in level based games. Where's the excitement? Where's the challenge of picking a fight that can go either way, especially if unexpected variables i.e. additional enemies appear? The main appeal of PvP is the rush from fighting and hopefully killing a player behind the avatar, especially if they have a modicum of skill. Also, it's an absolute blast from being chased and actually having an element of genuine fear and terror present in a game. That said, instagank does not produce fear or terror but utter tedium.

Freedom is created through players having genuine choice in their game-world and being able to affect their environment in meaningful ways. PvP can be a valuable tool by allowing players to compete for precious resources and/or controlling territory (DAoC, EVE Online). But PvP as a game mechanic by itself does not a good MMOG make.

I have no objection to PvP provided that it is used as a tool to develop the theme and feel of the game world, and allows players to create their own morality as they see fit. I personally prefer structured PvP i.e. realm vs realm or PvP in certain areas i.e. low sec space in Eve Online).

What I hate are PvP servers in a predominantly PvE MMOG. Unless PvP is built into the game design from the get go then I'm not interested and will only play PvE because PvP tends to be a joke in such games and does not confirm to the points above.

    Regards,

It's also fun to involve not just PVP in terms of combat, but PVP in terms of economics.

Lineage 2, ALWAYS A RISK lol. Watch out, rival clans, pkers, etc. Good stuff. Especially castle seiges.

Carebears can come too, there are A TON of boss monsters(they look pretty cool tooimage). It is sooo fun to get a HUGE group and raid them. Good stuff.

L2 saddly enforce PvP...I cant bear the nasty side effect of raiding on non-raiders the way it exist in EQ or WoW...so full unrestricted PvP and lack of instancing?  Yikes!  LOVE speed out!

But L2 look like a nice game, for PvP lovers.

i'm sure if you call them "carebears" they will all flock to Lineage 2.

If there was a "Both" choice I would choose it, but since there isnt, I guess PvE is my favourable, since too much pking can be seen as grief playing if you kill same person alot in a small amount of time not allowing him to do what he want, and since most monsters are easier than players, atleast you can have fun while you play, but that does not mean I dislike PvP, because I like it actually, but dont want a game based only on PvP, but allso like to destroy some giant Dragons and other monsters, wich allso require many players to kill, just like a guild war.

Early UO days, i remember house to house guild wars. Remember the guild stone that gave you a bag of regs.

    Dagger battles.

No game to date could touch the faction system.

Gamers now a days are spoiled. They get a little bit of this image    and their off doing this later image.

PVE was  mainly part of the single player genre. I mean why play online against a AI, and pay money for it when you could buy a single player game and maybe go and get the same experience in their little multi player option, with a group of your friends.

now gaming companies are springing up all over trying to sell their single player games as online multi player games p2p. And you are getting simple dungeon siege type auto combat with a few specialty buttons.image

Look aback at UO time and at the rpg titles that where in single player. There was a lot. Even for the consoles then. Now there are a dwindling few on any.

    Opinions will differ I'm sure.

    Good topic though.

PvP has it's place in MMORPG's but the problems arise when people just go on a killing spree for no reason targeting characters of extremely lower level. That's what bugg's me in some of these games. There is nothing wrong with Guilds feuding, Raiding between different factions, etc. But usually Those sorts of things have a purpose and involve those people that want to take part in the activities. Just my thoughs on the matter,

Well if you PvP you will always PvE,  There is no way around it.  Thats why I did not make a 3rd poll option for it.
