I know the EU is flush with trillions of euros but why waste money on that?

edit: rather the money spent on a mars colony.

All that money spent on R/D will benefit who exactly?

I really don't like Electric cars as an alternative.  Even if the electric car was the greatest thing in the world, there are alot of sacrafices to using a car without its own powerplant.  The batteries on this thing are always going to be an achilles heel.  Once they lose their charge it will be a highly toxic large amount of waste.  To get around this, an active electric grid would be a costly infrastructure expenditure.  I think we should just abandon the idea of electric cars unless they are powered by a powerplant within the vehicle.

I am usually an enemy of the European Union. But in this case, it made sense. The idea was to proof, even electro-cars can be powerful, because the usual prejudice is, that electro-cars are weak and "unsexy". So it was mostly to proof, that is perception was wrong. It isn't supposed to be mass produced. Just to "proof the point".
