I've been interested in starting to play Everquest, not EQII. I've heard that EQII is way too easy, but I had some questions about everquest. Basically I would like to know:
1. How populated are the servers?
2. How well maintained are the servers?
3. How is SOE's customer support?
4.What are your thoughts on the game (ups and downs)?
Thanks in advance.

1. If you play on the top populated servers the population is fine since the mergers.
2. The servers are excellently maintained and you should experience no lag.
3. SoE has horrid customer support typically.
4. EQ was a beautiful game in its prime, but alas, no more. Had you come a few years back you would have experienced something that no one has been able to clone. I have found that starting from scratch is actually quite fun, especially if you promise yourself that you won't do luclin+ until higher levels, but even then it is very lacking in the "new to the game" department as the majority of people who play now have pretty high mains and stay away from the low exp zones we vets were forced to trod through. All and all, if you really want a good game to play right now, and don't mind the pain of getting started without much help, then this game is beautiful - as long as you avoid the newer zones- but I suggest that you make a necro, sham, or mage as your first, because you are gonna have to expect to solo a good deal and money is harder in EQ than just about any other MMO ( I have a theory that this was partially what made it so good).

I would like to add that I played EQ for 2 years, SW:G for 4 months and EQ II for a month, and have never had any problems with Customer Service....
I think I may have just been lucky, but I seriously have nothing but praise for them.
A1) Server pop has never been bad, for me. Now with the server merges, the population is being forced back up, per server, to the point where it was.... prolly with the release of DAoC.... maybe.
However, I have noticed, as mentioned here, that the low end start zones tend to be empty. I blame this on PoP expansion :-/ But over all, the server pop is decent.
A2) Servers are apparently in pretty decent shape. Maintenance is performed monthly and sometimes they even include bug fixes. See "Patch - 04/12/05" Thread. Server side issues appear to be addressed quickly.
A3) I have personally had many wonderfull encounters with "in game customer support" people (no sarcasm intended). However, the out of game support... I spent 13 months discussing an issue, to finally have them tell me, "we found the problem, it's on our side, were not going to fix it". Assuming you can even reach them... Your experience may vary
A4) I have played since the release of Kunark (5 years ago, now) and still play. I now refuse to start new characters, the low end game (50-) has become senseless grind for me. The high end game still provides new content and new ways to die. I've tried other games, but I always end up back in EQ. EQ has found my challenge vs reward lvl. I find many quests bugged - frustrating, but overall, there is so much content, so much to do, so many places to go...

My dog barks some. Mentally you picture my dog, but I have not told you the type of dog which I have. Perhaps you even picture Toto, from "The Wizard of Oz." But I warn you, my dog is always with me.
