As mentioned it helps build realm pride for your side. (Community building)
It also built rivalries, fear, AND respect for your enemies. (Community building)
I consider it a consequence for dying. No one wants to have their name pop up as being killed (especially repeatedly). So it helped people play tactically and with some fear, not just feed themselves to the zerg meat grinder like most MMOs.
It gave a thrill of the hunt. When I saw the top enemy groups getting death spam on some fodder groups it made me be more on your toes and kept my head on a swivel. I knew I had to be on my A game (especially as a bard, since first CC meant everything against strong enemies).
And nothing was sweeter than support classes stealing death spam. I learned to time that DD shout perfectly and steal the death spam from the melee. lol

Oswald [Treehuggers] was just killed by Birger [Fenris] in Emain Macha!
Would help Guildpride as well as Realmpride, imo.
I think it is enough with player names to keep the messages short. If a Herald is implemented, people will quickly figure out who that name that keeps popping up belongs to.
Yes Guild Tag ain't very important in my opinion, we are all fighting for our realm. But what I reggretted on DAoC was to only see the first name.
Oswald TheLumberer was just killed by Birger Ragnar in Emain Macha!
I aggree it's not a big deal, but as we made family in DAoC it would have pleased me to see our familly name on the kill spam

I dislike that, but as you said not a big deal
Your first name is all that matters in a video game heh, especially because its the only one that is forced to be unique

It also helped keep people honest, as people would ask "where?" everytime someone got a kill on a slow day... and would get suspicious if someone kept killing the same guy over and over.. Maybe some X-realming shenannigans was going on.. Sorry celts if I got that word wrong.
Oh, and depending on how long our character names are allowed to be and the same for guild names.. I would like to see guild names added to death spam.. Possibly with a filter so we could decide just how much info we wanted to see on each kill.
If you were to be able to modify all the lines of text, you could display everything you want and more! There would also be a "default" button, incase you want to go back to what it normally is.

Example:
[%AllyName%] was killed by [%EnemyName%].
Some thing like this.
That would be pretty cool if death spam were that customizable. I'd be fine with the exact same information seen in DAOC though.

I am also thinking of all the different llnes in the game too. :-) As far as death spam goes, maybe also have something like "Cause of Death" like: toasted by his fireball, slain by %WeaponName%, etc.
I remember the kill spam being very informative as well. After you had been playing awhile you knew the names of the really proficient killers of the other realms, they became infamous. You knew their class and quite possibly had encountered them before.
Good 8 man hib groups with PBAOE would show up hilarious on the kill spam.
All of a sudden you would see 1 guy kill 10-15 people in less than 5 seconds.
I don't remember their names now, but on albion lancelot back in the day I knew by name 3 or 4 hib pbaoers because they got so much kill spam in emain (OF).
Also you'd know what guild they were from, their class, who they ran with, etc... just from the kill spam.
I don't know how it would be implemented, but I'd like to see a spam for kickarse healers, too. Something like, "Zaev was miraculously saved by Healerdude near [Location]!" as I always felt that the healers were left out of the name spam picture.
Maybe only spams if the player is actively in combat and is between 1-4% life or something?
My name is Plastic-Metal and my name is an oxymoron.
...So, what do you think? Should CU have kill spam like daoc did? I Sure hope they do, while a subtle point, it made the game more fun and helped facilitate fights....
I would like to see a semi-large annoucement on my screen when I get killshots:
"YOU HAVE KILLED <Invader MARKJACOBSLOL> !"
or
"<Invader MJLOVESPIDERMAN> HAS KILLED YOU!"
Make it a resizeable, moveable (via UI editing) option that I can move center screen, lower/upper screen etc.

One thing I liked in WoW, was the mods that let you track how much you healed in a raid or how much dps you had done.
They had something built into WAR too as I recall. But I suppose that sort of stat tracking would only work for a finite time period, such as an boss battle or dungeon or an instanced battleground that had a beginning and an end.
It would be nice if the supporting classes could have something they could point to and brag about, like the damage dealers. So they could claim to be the best healer or the master of CC or something like that.. But I cant really think of a way to do that on a persistant and dynamic battleground.. Perhaps the game could count the combined disables they had provided since last dying and announce it when ever they hit 1 minute 5 minutes and 10 minutes total disables. and something similar for how much a healer had healed. It does seem a bit unwieldy though and Im sure its not the right solution.

Heck yeah. Also, wasn't it realm specific by color?
Hib kill spam green
Alb kill spam red
Mid kill spam blue
Nuttin like attacking a hib owned keep, and seeing a bunch of mid kill spam to get your blood pumping.
