I pretty much agree with the OP.

One thing, though, you can rebind your keys, so players can at least make keybindings that will probably work better for them than the default. However, I noticed that aome keys seem to be hard coded to certain function, but the game will still let you use those keys in your keybindings. Not fu  to have an in game screen pop up when you try to trigger a skill! Another minus on keybindings, alt, shift and ctr can be used for keybindings, but you can not apparently use them for modifiers.

The rest of the original post is pretty spot on.

Personally, I had a lot of fun and the game was very accessible for a new player, assuming you can get the controls set up the way you want them. I loved the storylines and I will be playing the game mostly for the tie in with the tv series.

    My biggest caveats:

Although I had a lot of fun, it's not really an MMORPG, since it's lacking many of the features one expects from social RPG experience. Chat is clunky. There are no emotes. There is no Auction House, no crafting, no real class system, no group specific content, etc... It's really more an MMO Action Shooter than anything, with a heavy emphasis on PvE and story content.

Also, though I enjoy the missions, I just don't see this being a game that one would be able to get much more than 100 hours of PvE game play from, considering the content the game will ship with, not any future Paid DLCs. So, it's an MMO that will be great for fans of the show and as an occassional change of pace, but I don't see it being the type of MMO that many players will play 15+ hours a week for several months or years to come. There is nothing wrong with that and the B2P business model makes it even more acceptable, but for those looking for a new "full time" MMO with a sci-fi slant to provide them with all their MMO gaming needs for an extended period of time, I just don't think this game is it.

I'm almost certainly going to buy it, but I'm looking at it with realistic expectations and will be happy if I get more then 80 hours of play time from the core game. If the TV series is good and the DLC can keep pace while maintaining quality, I can see myself playing this game mainly part time during the months a series season runs and only very occassionally during the months in between.

    Final Note:

I've seen some people try to seperate the success of the game from the success of the TV show. IMO, if the show is good, the game could crash and burn and it wouldn't effect the TV series. However, I think the game really needs the series to survive because I just don't get the impression that there is enough here for the game to be successful with out the TV series tie in. I love the concept being attempted here and to Trion's credit the game is better than most movie/TV tie ins we've seen from the days of Atari to current time. Part of what excites me about this is the possibility that this type of tie in may be an early indication of where entertainment is heading.

Fiontar, just a quick note, there are emotes (I had to dig a bit to find them) and there is a rudimentary crafting with their salvage system thing.

I'll have to look at rebinding dodge... I kept trying to hit "V" to dodge, then finally got used to it... however when I went back to GW2 I was all screwed up again. I'll need to map Defiance to be more like GW2 before my head explodes.

    Oderint, dum metuant.
