What differs this game from Planetside 2 and Firefall?

LahuzerLahuzer Member UncommonPosts: 782
From all the vids I've seen so far this game looks like a cross between Planetside 2 and Firefall. I didn't like PS2 at all, and the whole swapping stations amongs the factions. I liked Firefall more, but the graphics don't appeal to me. But if the devs there comes through with their plans of playerowned bases etc, it could get rly fun. But what sets Defiance apart from those games. Except for the connection to the tv-show etc. Seems to be like a standard shooter with some MMO elements, and pointless PVP. But please tell me I'm wrong...

Planetside is a PvP FPS game, period. There's no PvE element to it what so ever. Defiance is a PvE third person shooter with optional forms of PvP, those being instanced 10v10 or 16v16 BG style matches, or Shadow Wars which takes place in the open PvE world but, again, is something you sign up for. Is it pointless PvP? About as much as PvP in any themepark I could mention. The objective is to provide some fun, rather than some vague form of advantage for a faction.

Firefall is Class based. Defiance has an open system of skill progression where you unlock EGO skills and perks and equip them in a mix and match fashion of your own choosing. If you want the cloak ability there's nothing saying you have to be a sniper, but there's a certain synergy in it. Then again you can use cloak to get close and bash things in the face as well. It's a very flexible skill system, that offers more flexibility the more you unlock. There is a weapon that allows a player to heal others but anyone can use it. Nobody is tied down into a role like they are in a class based system like Firefall uses.

Those are pretty much the key differences between the games you mentioned. Not counting artistic style etc, but just on game mechanics.

Ill tellyou what i like about Defiance.

Ive played both planetside and firefall fairly breifly. I cannot get on with the graphics with firefall and PS 2 was fairly good to be honest. I enjoy massive scale shooters.

Now with regards to Defiance what i do like is the setting and i think it relates more to Fallen Earth than either of the above, i like how just the apocalyptic setting pulled me in. I love the vehicles and travelling and whilst i only had a brief crack at pvp i found this ok too. I have tbh the maps in firefall felt tight but i didnt feel that in defiance. I felt like i could wander aroun d a bit more. For me personally i was a fan of Defiance and after this beta weekend i bought it. It is going to be like Marmite with some people though ( if you know what that it). If i were you i would hit youtube up a bit and try to get into a trial at some point. Youll get lots of different opinions because as i mentioned people seem to either love it or hate it.

I'm a PVP type of guy mostly. And I love open world PVP. WHat is this Shadow War thingy? How does that work? Is a ongoing thing there, or is it reset at some point when some1 "wins"? And is there any clans, and if there is, does that serve any purpose? And what about crafting? Can you craft the best things, or is that only dropped or bought ingame somehow?

Shadow Wars is a flag system where you opt-in and the whole map is now PVP. There are clans and they give bonuses to xp and money as well as tags and such. No crafting as of the beta but I can't speak about the alpha as it's under NDA (You'll be happy though) so weapons are only available through drops and vendors.

Just a bit more on Shadow Wars. It's a 50v50 battle that's objective based and there will be a winner and a loser, then the fight is over. The objectives are spread all over the map so you'll fight over one then hop on you quad bike and race to the next one and so on.

As for crafting, no there isn't any. Weapons are looted or gained as rewards or bought and they are tiered by colour, white green blue etc. The base stats aren't that different but the better weapons have upgrade slots you can fit mods to. Mods allow you to improve the weapon by increasing things like accuracy, crit multiplier, melee dmg etc. The thing is that weapons and EGO rating (level) don't seperate the population as drastically as say WoW's levels. You can have a blue weapon and 2000 EGO and still be killed by someone with a white weapon with no mods and 50 EGO rating. You just have more options with 2000 EGO. There are perks that will reduce incoming dmg from above or behind by as much as 30% and increase outgoing dmg by 15% but the advantages aren't huge. As a shooter they need to keep it competetive across the board so keeping the level difference tighter is something that helps achieve that.

One thing I will say because it has to be mentioned, the UI is atrocious. It's a console UI that's ported straight to PC and it's a bit of a clusterf*ck. I hate it, but I still plan on picking the game up. It was enough fun for me that I can forgive it for the UI but it's something to bear in mind.

    Edit:

Testing is done as far as Beta goes, Launch next Tuesday.

Fixed. The UI is totally usable, and when you learn how to use it well, is fast and easy. Jsut different.

It's all been said above, but I have to say that the UI just takes some getting used to.  Heck, when I first played in the alpha, I didn't even know how to log out roflmao.

Thanks for the thought but my opinion doesn't need to be fixed. The UI is fucking abysmal compared to PC developed titles. I'm quite sure it's the norm for consoles but as a PC player I find it seriously lacking. That's my opinion, I'm entitled to it, and I'd appreciate it if you refrain from editing it, thanks.

Other than that it's a decent game and I had fun playing it.

From Planetside2? Alot. They don't even belong to the same genre.

From Firefall? Not much. Same genre, but different implementation/mechanics only.

There is one significant difference - the engine - Defiance validates every shot fired from every weapon, so yes it is a true "pixel perfect shooter" (to use that lame phrase).

On the other hand there was a video of Firefall on youtube (it got taken down) of a guy running a 100% accuracy sniper test (using an aimbot program, I know, lame) but he used it to eliminate human error - he would have random misses because the engine doesn't validate every shot.

Again to some this is not a big deal, but when you line up a headshot and you miss because of the engine limitations, it sucks, so for me Defiance all the way, if Firefall ever fixes their engine it would be so much better.

Funnily enough, the Firefall devs disagree with you. http://www.firefallthegame.com/community/threads/random-misses.88485/#post-1813900

Planetside 2 is PvP only and First Person shooter.

I prefer both Defiance and Firefall. Both have PvP but focus on PvE and are THird Person.

If you ask me, PS2 needs a Third Person perspective option (firefall has both FPS and TPS). Defiance needs a cover system. And Firefall needs more content.

But yeah, ill stick to Defiance and Firefall.

Agree with the rest but the part in red.

Planetside 2 is not really an FPS, that's why so many FPSers who are from Battlefield or Quake-ish type of background don't like it.

Planetside 2 is actually a First Person Wargame.

In Defiance's plotline (tv), I believe humany is battling other races.  In the mmorpg my guess is as usual there will be "factions" of cloned race groups (ala Age of Conan), or no respect at all for races allying together?  In other words will there be any sort of "sci fi realm vs realm" in effect or will it be yet another game with races being only cosmetic?

    thanks

EDIT:  PLOTLINE in relation to the tv series:

An unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, Defiance is the first-ever convergence of television and Massive Multiplayer Online gaming, featuring an interconnected world and storylines that will co-exist on both platforms. Defiance is a visionary enterprise in collaboration with Trion Worlds, with the Syfy series and Trion's multi-platform shooter MMO poised to debut simultaneously.

The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.

So I'm guessing races and classes will just group together like a salad and there will be no real us vs them type sense, more so, us vs us.

In Defiance during the normal PvE human and vothans are working together. During PvP you have two teams one against the other, but no race vs race.
