Jacobs: 'I don't want F2P/B2P items in Camelot Unchained'

gylnnegylnne Member UncommonPosts: 322

Mark answered more questions over at Massively yesterday.

This part I really like.

After yesterday's two-pronged Kickstarter tiers announcement, we wanted to clarify a few things including whether or not CU's crowdfunding drive will accommodate entry-level price points as well as the status of the game itself. Jacobs also pulls no punches about his desire to keep XP boosts and other F2P/B2P items out of the game. "I just don't want to see those types of items in our game," he tells us, "even if we could make some additional money by including them."

MJ has said during the MMORPG.com interview (I think) that the items being sold, maybe be cosmetic, e.g. adding purple and blue flames to your sword or a brilliant shade of lime green enamel. He did state that there will be NO weapons, armor, etc that you buy from the store. I personally don't mind stuff like that, since people might want come to you and ask you to cosmetically enhance their gear.

I encourage everyone to read down through the comments. He is point blank defining things in the Foundational Principles and I at this point have never been so excited about an upcoming game.:)

I wouldn't mind weapon and armpr skins being sold in the cash shop as long as they:
    1) were one use items
    2) required an appropriate crafter to skin them

Currently playing: GW2 (Maguuma), DAoC (Uthgard), & Aion

"...you get to say the magical words "DEKCUS AOT" and then throw your choice of tasty fruit pies at Mark Jacobs..."

    That's pretty good.

No cash shop. The in-game store allows people to redeem their FP for items that they would have chosen for their Pledge Tiers during our Kickstarter. Instead of simply loading up the box (physical or digital) with items that a lot of people might not have wanted, posters here and on other forums asked for more flexibility. FPs allowed us to put a ton of items in the store so that each player is able to customize their rewards. It's as simple as that. FYI, there will be no XP potions, power-ups, etc. either in the rewards or ever. This is a sub-based game and I have no intention to treat is as a F2P/B2P game.

I hope this addresses your concerns.

Ironic when the original "old" way of doing things is now the new "right" way of doing things...

I wish more developers would go back to the "old" way!

Yep, totally agree. These F2p and B2p items are just killing the integrity of gaming.

I am strongly opposed to selling powerful items in cash shops that can't be acquired in game. I don't have a problem with temporary boosts of the "grants 50% bonus realm points for 4 hours" variety. If selling stuff like that, character renames, server transfers, and various cosmetic gear skins in a cash shop helped keep the game running after release without requiring a typical $14.95/month sub fee, that wouldn't bother me. That's not the current plan, I know. But 2015 is a long way away.
