Best world environment in an mmo?

I'm looking around for a new mmo to play, and what I enjoy most is wandering around and seeing new sites and unique places.   My question is, what are people's opinions on which mmo has the best scenery and the most immersive world or worlds?  Any opinions?

Ok Ive played everything currently released for at least a month. Without a doubt in my mind the best "environment" is WoW.

The main disputes about WoW's grafix fall in to the "love or hate" the style camps. Style aside the way in which the beasts and monsters move and react in their environments is the best I have seen in any game to date.

You see things happen like predator animals (lions etc) chasing down and killing prey animals (antelope, rabbits etc) and behaving "normally". I have never seen anything like it in other games. The areas tend to be populated by creatures that make sense for the location and behave in ways that add to the emmersion rather than breaking it.

The underwater stuff is really well done. Water in general is treated very well and you can stand on the shore and watch big fish etc swimming about realistically, then jump in and kill them lol.

Overall, taking into account the variety and sense of realism put into WoW's environment, Id say its easily the most enjoyable world I have played in.

As I said though, you either love it or hate it because of WoW's grafix style, I happen to love it, but it seems to be a pretty even split among folks.

WoW for fun and pretty darn cool places/ Lineage 2 for crappy fun but awesome visuals, and i mean awesome! still gameplay is so crappy i didn't get past the first 15 days without being bored to death

Star Wars Galaxies had some nice environments as I remember it.... So did FFXI.

But when Dark and Light releases it will make every other MMO environment look like trash.

Ok Wandering around hmmm... WOW (www.worldofwarcraft.com) has the nicest graphics. RYL: Path of the Emperor (www.ryl.net) although sometime crappy the Open field map Is very nice there no ports that you have to get just to go to another place. Every time you go further the bigger the nastier creatures you can encounter. MU online (www.muonline.com) well for me its ok.. Lineage II (www.lineage2.com) well the game is crappy but the environment really rocks.image And also Final FAntasy XI well im just a fan of it.

Dont ask what you think is good for you. Ask what he thinks is good for you

Well I heard Ryzom mentioned a couple of times, I'll try that.

I've already played Wow for a couple months and the only thing I liked was the lions killing the rabbits.  That always put a smile on my face.  Other than that though I actually thought it was kind-of bland.

I may try RYL sometime too, it seems I've been hearing some other good things about that game here and there.

SWG. Well, it is if you are at least somewhat a fan of the series. Going around to the POIs, seeing the cities and lands of the movie. My favorite way was on one of my mounts, but a landspeeder or bike was nice as well. There are lots of games with very nice worlds, but the fact that you could actually go to places you saw in the movies in SWG gives it the edge. And sitting in a cantina listening to the SWG music is entertaining as well (especially when a fight breaks out with the sounds of blasters and such).

Guildwars, EVE and Hero's Journey all have some very nice enviroments.

Right now World of Warcraft is the game with the nicest eviroments. No other game on the market right now can match the amount of details put into the enviroment.

    ragnarok had environment effects?

  • ThoemseThoemse Member UncommonPosts: 457

Depneds if it has to be a planet environment.
EvE Online has some of the best space graphicsw i've ever seen.
Once you've fought enemies in a firecloud with a ruined spacestation and debris all over you'll know what i mean.

If good graphics are really your bag then of the games I've played Ryzom is pretty spectacular (imho) and also eve-online.

If you fancy a historical setting then try Roma Victor or Pirates of the Burning Sea - when they release this year.

I'm currently loving WoW but I have to say that Ryzom offered the best environment.

You can stand and watch the animal behaviour for hours. Great stuff.

Razorback nailed it on why to try WoW. From what I've seen of it, Ryzom's got an obsessive amount of AI which makes it easy to immerse yourself in.

Now, take heart, this is just for the Environment.

    1: World of Warcraft
    2: EverQuest
    3: Eve Online

And as for Ragnorok, I havent played it yet so I'm not sure.

dark and light also runs about as fast as rocks on a flat surface on a day with no wind, even on my high-spec machine. it does have an ok environment, sure, and you can do some cool stuff, but it's one of the most boring mmorpg's i've ever touched.

and Everquest is the only MMORPG i've ever just "wondered" around in. I did the same with AO, but usually only in the cities.

Im going to say SWG, The world is so huge, and it has points of interests on each planet, and what they are, is waypoints to all locations from the movies, like on tantoine you can go to the lars homestead, ben kenobis, hut, the Sarlac pit, C3PO and R2D2 escape pod, etc, etc. Its pretty awsome.

Anarchy Online has the most stunning enviorment i have ever seen, unfortunately, there is no reason to ever explore it, so much potential, all wasted, sad..

IMHO, World of Warcraft was the MMO from those i have tried the one to be on the top when in comes to enviornment. They are stunning. The work done in Eve online was also very nice, just seeing screen shots of space made me want to try it. Ryzom isn't too bad either.
