I have read many different reviews of the game. Some good, some bad, some indifferent. Many of the same good points are mentioned over and over and many of the same bad things are mentioned over and over again. So after all is said and done, it seems I will probably have to check the game out for myself to decide. I am concerned about the pricing. I just want to clarify. I have to pay for the initial game and then an additional $39 if I want the season content, meaning the new content when it comes out?

the $40 season pass is a bundle of all the DLC they plan to release for this "season"
its optional, and youll be able to buy the DLC as they come, which is what i would reccoment doing. There still is little info on what exactly the DLC's will provide, how many there will be and how much each individual DLC will cost. So the season pass right now is really something you buy then cross your fingers on.
Top it off there was a developer quote stating that each DLC will have lots of free content and that they will not be locking people who didnt buy the DLC out of dungeons and events. Its looking like DLC will give storyline chain quests as well as the possibility of new races. So it looks like the DLC itself is going to be more optional than most games who do DLC.
If your totally into the TV series and love the game then get the season pass, as it will probably be cheaper than each individual DLC. If your on the line with the game, as you sound, dont bother with it yet.
Also make sure your not buying the season pass and thinking its the full game, make sure you buy the actual game, should be $60 roughly.
Be sure your interested in what defiance is. Its basically GW2 mechanics with lots of events and side challanges you need to rank in to get rewarded..difference being theres actual progression in gear and level, as well as ego passives. You get one real "magic" skill that kind of defines your class and starting position in the small ego passive skill grid (though all can be unlocked aside from the 4 main skills) i think you can respec too.
Instanced dungeons via a match maker, same with pvp. There is also shadow wars, which looks like a mmorpg style pvp event, havent tried it yet but it seems to be capture points with more people than the pvp matches. Most of your time will be spent driving towards a main storyline objective and getting all sorts of distracted with events and side quests (how the game should be played) otherwise racing through all the main story is kind of a short experience..at least for now.
