Originally posted by Aelious Personally I think it's just the end of a phase for the genre. It's not like MMOs have had a long, storied history. WoW instigated a lock down in game design due to its overwhelming popularity (see revenue). That's burned itself out though since there so many "versions" per playerbase revenue.
It will be changing for sure but you probably won't see it by the end of the year.
uh?
Marvel Heroes is a change in the design ... more ARPG then MMO.
How about World of Planes? Or Defiance which just launched? None is in the WOW model.
3. You sure about that? I watched part of an hour long gameplay for Defiance and seen a boxed "!" above objective NPCs, a corresponding objectives list on the right side, markers for said objectives you could see through all visual entities and "click this, kill that" ways to complete them. I seen levels and I assume classes? It seemed like it could be in enough but that wasn't in question. It seemed VERY "WoW like" in it's gameplay.

If having quests with pointers = WOW like .. then Skyrim is wow-like. Borderlands 2 is wow-like and even Bioshock is "wow-like".
Combat is totally different in Defiance. Setting is totally different in Defiance. How is that wow-like? It is not even fantasy.
Exactly. Molded environments featuring point A,B & C objectives one after another with neon markers. "WoW-like" has nothing to do with a different skin or shooting instead of slashing. It's a complete gameplay and environment type of design. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it will provide fun for many and at some point I may even play it myself. I was commenting on the "non WoW-like" which I don't agree with.
Just watching the gameplay video I felt I had already played it. It's interesting if you're tied into the show I guess. I don't have that channel though so that's out
Just taking about Defiance: I didn't see any combat other than bullets, there was no variety. Yes, I understand that a lot of games use neon and flashing signs to get you from one thing to another and although I understand why I think it robs those games of some mystery, some feeling of unexpectedness. I'm thrilled you like them but my catogorization is just. Before you ask, yes, to me and those who may agree.
I don't know if this is the end of genre, but I'm getting a bit worried for the fact that the game I'm waiting for the most is a certain private server for a certain older MMO.
Unless I am confusing it with another topic in LFGame, i responded to the topic feeling the same as the OP, very bored. Since then I have found a MMO. Since I started Age of Wushu, I havent had this much fun with a MMO in a year or 2. I am patiently waiting for Final Fantasy 14 ARR while having a blast in this EVE/soul calibur hybrid.

They can always throw an a surprising scripted event. I don't want to play treasure hunt in my games. Looking for stuff is easy, not challenging, and not fun for me.
I have done enough of that in the old Might & Magic days when you had to draw your own map.
Been playing FFXIV and while I can't say anything about it, I can say it's been a lot of fun. I am also looking forward to wildstar. I think it will bring back a lot of the missing mmo magic.
It is certainly the end of several gaming companies.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon. In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

That is nothing new. Gaming companies come and go all the time.
I'm sure the staff who lost their jobs would be a bit more shocked than you appear to be. If you think mass layoffs and closings are commonplace, then I guess that is a byproduct of the sad state of the world economy. Are you, per chance, from Greece?

If they do, they haven't been in the business long enough.
Sony closed a few studios. Studio 38 went down .. the list goes on and on .. MMO, *and* non-MMO companies.

I really really hate vanilla icecream. Its just so bland and boring. I get bored of it so easily.
Is this the end of icecream? Cake is far better anyway.

RG sold out, and Origin is gone.
Westwood studio is gone.
Sierra Online is gone.
Ion Storm is gone.
...
I don't see anything special.
