Food for thought... Even if there is no standard map (which I am a fan of), from how they spoke of their UI it would be only a day before there was a custom UI with a map.. so is that only going to hurt the people that wouldn't use it?
The likely hood of it being able to show where you are currently located is unlikely however unless you can pull your loc into the Web Code the map uses and project a GPS like locator.

It definitely depends on what they make available, sure. I just figured there would be something like /loc like there was in DAoC, and assuming that data would be available to the UI as everything else. Even one of the examples he gives in the UI video is making a "heat map" on where fights occur or something like that.
What ever happens, I would future expansions to be taken into account. It would be nice if there were neutral zones which might allow trade between factions as well as opening up options for people to join the neutral zone faction.

I also think it would be cool to add a substantial 'neutral' zone in the center of the map where it would be up to the players of each realm to really build up the infrastructure etc. Heck, perhaps the majority of the map should be this way.
edit: By neutral, I mean simply not favored to one realm or another. RvR would still be in play.

Andrew touched on that in a post somewhere, how the game will communicate with the server in game and out of game. You won't have access to everything all the time. He also mentioned limiting information for things like radar and cheats, but it was very brief so it bears keeping an eye on.
Also, he was using a lot of programmer speak, which was hurting my mind, so I probably got it all wrong.
One other thing.. I'm pretty sure Mark has stated that players will be responsible for building the majority of structures in the frontiers.. so a traditional map in the sense of DAoC built around pre-existing keeps may be a moot point anyway. Would definitely be cool for players to be able to choose strategic locations to establish themselves.
It would be nice to have a compas on screen that gave general direction (+/- 45 degrees). So we would not have exact direction but good enough to get close.

I like the idea of a pacifist choice and an outlaw choice, each with it's own pros and negatives for ex. if you pick either you are susceptible to being attacked by all 3 factions (sorry but in war there is no such thing as neutrality).
It will never happen, but I figure it doesn't hurt to mention the idea. War has neutrality. WWII had five neutral countries in Europe.
