Im looking to buy a MMORPG

hello I just got a new computer after runing on a pentium 2 so i decided to play a MMORPG but im haveing some problems figureing out wich one to buy. i come from playing FFXI and Socom 2 on my ps2 (im in to fantasy, combat, and si-fi). Right now i have my eyes on WoW and the matrix online and im haveing a hard time figureing out wich to get. I was about to get WoW intill i heard that getting to lvl 60 isnt to long to get to, quests/missions are alot alike, and there isnt much to do once you get 60.  I been hearing alot of good things about the matrix online like the missions and graphics.  I like the idea that both of them supports player vs player also. Could any one tell me your opinion of what i should buy out of the 2 or maybe another MMORPG id like?

thank you for your time.

The Matrix Online has gotten very mixed reviews, so you will have to try that for yourself. I would not try WoW since myself and 3 others -all members on this board- have gotten tired of it and regretted ever playing it after a measily 2 months. I would attempt a free trial of EVE Online and see if you enjoy that game. You could try Anarchy Online free for 8 more months and play with all the expansions for only 9.99 a month, all for a light download.

Combat is tricky. It depends what combat you speak of, but since you are a SII player [as of myself...I was a 500 hour player a month last year] I would try World War II Online or Planetside. City Of Heroes is combat esque and the brainchild of the Matrix Online [deny it all you want, fanboys.::::39::] and I have had many hours of fun playing it.

Dark Age of Camelot keeps getting better with the constant free graphics updates and even though it is one of the oldest mmorpgs on the list, it is one of the best. You could also wait for Guild Wars's retail release, which is rumored to outsell WoW.

Just see what you like. Half of the fun of playing the genre is the huge variety of content.

Yeah ive been playing Anarchy Online for the Past Week and its pretty sweet. Ive always been into fantasy, but this is actually a pretty good game. And its free if you dont want the expansions. I might just end up paying 9.99 a month and getting the expansions it seems pretty sweet.

OK, Honestly i think the argument "its so easy to get to 60 in WoW2 is an invalid one, ESPECIALLY when people then start on about Guild Wars, in which 20 is the cap (i believe)...

Its not the point of either of those games to get to the level cap.

WoW is about the quests. If you enjoy following various storylines and exploring a world, with a bit of PvP thrown in, then WoW is a quality game. Take it slowly, follow quest lines you like, play with a team as much as possible (2+ other players). I like it for the quests and stories - which are very good, in fact the best quest/mission system in ANY game i feel. But the PvP is very "meh"... if you are in it for the fighting dont bother (can anyone say "gankfest"?)

Eve - if you enjoy the "slow burn" is a very complex & deep game that will keep you involved for months and months... But its definenly a love it or hate it game... Its kept me hooked since 2003. The PvP has some real meaning - its free for all (with some police you need to avoid) combat, and all about the players, player politics etc.. The best MMO out there for my money, awesome graphics. The combat system is very very strategic - its all about knowing your ship/modules and your capability. Teamwork is essential, I've been part of frigate teams taking down battleships, seen full fleet combat or little raiding parties.

Guild wars is still int the "free weekends" so you might be able to get into that. Its all about the PvP, and is truly awesome at that... the closest you will get to a twitch MMO. Even though many say its not a true MMO it feels pretty close to one to me, but the PvP game in that is without question the best in a MMO. (thats saying a lot coming from an Eve fanatic)

Anarchy online - i can sorta see what people see in it, but its not for me.. i was underwealmed by it.

Matrix Online... Beta was... challenging to say the least. I found the city scapes to be depressing. Well done and graphically sometimes impressive, but depressing alll the same - to much sameness... but it does feel like a big city. The combat, when it works, is very nice, bt again a love it or hate it type thing as its very different from most other games, but it can be interesting (espeially the 1v1 martial arts, beautiful and fun) The missions were, to be honest, very very sucky, i actively avoided them. I didn't go p2p from beta as it wasn't anything special for me (mainly the city bored me to tears) - but if you can get past that, and have a really good computer/graphics card - go for it :)

City of Heroes - its in a category of its own... again beta was fun - showed some awesome potential back then, but at the time my grapics card was not quite up to it... (was on a laptop) but some of the most fun for lower levels in any game i've played. - best combat system and customisable avatars bar none. But from what i hear it doesn't really change after that. I hear there will be a PvP system coming soon, but was all PvE when i played.

hope this helped in some way.

Isn't this the timeless classic of a thread lol. For me nothing that's out right now is worth my money. Been playing Anarchy Online since it's free right now but it's not something I would pay for. I'm gonna pick up Guild Wars when that comes out to hopefully tie my over for the summer and the no monthly payment plan seems nice. At first glance I'd say it's lacking in content and is mostly for PvP and private questing, but we'll see. I'll be sure to give you guys a thorough review when I pick it up. I'm also waiting for Dark and Light which is scheduled for later this year and I'm keeping my eye on Vanguard Saga of Heros, and Hero's Journey.

    Neither
    Get SWG
You'll be much happier with the results
And if you need a fantasy fix or Pure PVP fix spring for the $21.95 a month SOE all access pass and play SWG, PlanetSide, EQ1 and EQ2 as well all on the same fee (Note: You would, naturally, have to buy the games as well but EQI you can get for 19.95 with everything but the last two expansions and you can find PlanetSide for the same price. EQ2 is a bit costly though.

    Just my opinion.
Best MMO on the market: SWG
Best Value on the market: SOE All Access Pass

A game that hasn't been mentioned yet is AC2 Legions which is coming out in May 4, and looks great. It's something to consider when making your choice.

Interesting but until Turbine shows they can properly support and expand a game I won't be buying it. Both AC1 and AC2 have languished under Turbine. And MEO is already being changed for the worse as well and they haven't even gotten out of 'concept' with the game yet.

For a mix of Socom and Original Sci-Fi action, you may want to check out Planetside, an excellent 'MMOFPS'

Elnator, I will say that AC2 was in bad shape during it's first year, but it has steadily gotten better. The game is now to a point where it is very competent, and the expansion pack will have lots of fresh ideas on character development and more bug fixes and fun things to do.

AC was always a great game. It had a few rough patches, but overall it is just better than ever these days. I think AC is the best MMORPG ever made. Have you seen the quests that have come out in the past 6 months for this game. They are amazing.

What is wrong with Middle Earth Online? They hardly tell you anything about what they are doing for the game, so I don't see how anyone has enough information to make a judgement.

Recently the devs said there will be no PvP in Middle Earth Online so people that love PvP/PK:ing decided that it will suck becuase of that.

For sci-fi mmorpg there is the free version of Anarchy Online (=no expansions) & The Matrix Online (just released). With the "all acces pass" from SOE you get both PlanetSide & SWG, one of them will probably succed in wasting some of your time.

It may be missing PvP, but it may excel in other areas and still turn out to be a great game.
