Divergence has just reached its funding goal on Indiegogo and the numbers keep rising.
It looks like we are going to be able to log into this game! I will have a great deal of fun if this game goes onto be a success with such a small team versus the giants who spend millions out there.

I am glad he got the money, hopefully it will be enough to get him where he wants to go. It wasn't a ton, but he has a lot done already, from the look of things.

It's certainly a relief to see that so many players are already supporting this game. Ethan is a bloody hard worker, and has his sights set on that one goal of hitting release.
By the looks of things, we're gonna start seeing alot more content coming out of SGL for Divergence over the coming months.
Not right now, but AFAIK they plan to launch another fundraiser in a few weeks, when they release the next video.
Stay tuned!

"Evening Star": a The Repopulation novel.
Thx for the info. Since I have my head up my ass most of the time, if you remember me, please send me a mail here and say if it's on. Cause I might miss it, and would like to have it covered.

No disrespect but where did you get that idea?
Can you post a link to what is done so far? I don't remember seeing anything other than running around in indoor and outdoor environments. Have there been videos or blogs of completed gameplay?

Have you looked at the older posts in this very forum? The numerous times he has asked for donations because the game was "90% done and just needs a little more"? That quote was from 2007! Or how about the thread where he went on a tirade against mmorpg.com themselves because they "stopped supporting him". Seriously. How can you see anything but him being a shiester?

Y U NO FLIP TABLE?!?!?!
See, I don't see him as a shyster. I think that he genuinely believes he can create and operate the MMORPG that he envisions. My personal issue with all this isn't with EthanC but with the amount of MMO gamers that read a list of idealistic, wondrous things, see the usual ass-view screenshots and environment videos, and assume that what they are looking at indicates there is any kind of game present... or that the person creating it has the ability to create it at all.
MMO gamers seem extremely gullible in that regard and then ardently defend their view without actually giving the project the slightest bit of critical inspection. Hope seems to regularly triumph history and fact on a regular basis here.

I mostly agree with you. I simply cannot call him anything but a thief though because he should know better. I can see him no differently than a televangelist. Even if they honestly believe in their god, and that god is speaking through them, selling it in that way is absurd.

So say you pour your heart and soul into something like he has....are you never allowed to ask for help? Are you never allowed to get frustrated? I bet if I went through your past posts I would find some 'tirades'. Let the game develop, donate or not donate. Play or not play. I for one am looking forward to this and he can "shiester" me outta 50$ when the time comes too!!
I highly doubt you could find me launching a "tirade". Even if you could though I am just a random guy on the internet. Not a CEO asking for you money and promising you a service.

You are right, I most likely couldn't because I would not spend the time looking. Either way I just don't understand why people feel the need to attempt to discredit something that has not effect on their lives what so ever. But I am happy to oblige in conversation to keep Divergence getting some buzz
That alone shows just how poor an analogy that is. The important part though is his blatant lack of professionalism. You do not climb into a van that says Free Candy on the side, so why are you going to listen to a guy that has yet to produce anything but some screenshots? The same stuff that he has been using for years. This is exactly why I draw lines between him and the garbage that Appleton has spread. And much like the negative press that Appleton has created it does effect me. The more of these shitty projects that throw out great ideas and continue to beg for money and not produce anything the more people are not willing to pony up for the projects that are not pipe dreams. Vaporware is not something that should EVER be thought of as a good thing.

Do you vote? Seems to me its okay to want something to improve my mmo's gaming experiences, just as I do when I cast a vote in an election I'm doing so in hope of improving my quality of life. If you have some personal vendetta against him that is fine. I sometimes get angry at politicians.
You accuse him of attempting to discredit EthanC and imply he has some kind of a personal vendetta, when he has displayed nothing of the sort. He is presenting his opinion and views based on what he has seen so far, the history of projects like this, the history of the guy making it, and what has proven to be realistically achievable by similar teams.

Of course I vote. I would be a rather shitty American if I did not. The problem again with your analogy is that I only vote for those that I truly believe can be of benefit. Generally by actually looking at what they have done and just how in tune those idea's are with what I feel needs to actually be done. I do not vote in ignorance. Though I truly wish more people would vote like me. If you truly believe his rhetoric over what he has actually produced I pity you. Look at Planet Explorers. Its similar to this in many ways yet actually have something to show for it. Why are you not backing them?
@Lok Thank you for summing that up better than I could.

... but, unless you are voting for somebody´s reelection, wouldn´t it be fair to say that, no matter how informed your decision may be, you are actually throwing a bit of hope into the mix?
I mean: if your candidate for Governor has never been Governor before, how can you be absolutely certain he´s good at the job? (even if he´s been an outstanding senator, or prosecutor, or CEO, or whatever)
Of course: the lengthier your candidate´s resumé in other areas, the more informed your decision... but in anything new, you gotta admit that what you "truly believe" requires a leap of faith. Obviously, here´s when "mileage may vary" applies; for some, a few feet may be a great leap; others may feel confident with yards, or kilometers.
I think that what I´m trying to say is: just let the faithful have their Pascal´s wager. If they lose, nobody loses much; you have a good point that we could certainly live with less vaporware, but (again mileage may vary...) IMHO is no such big deal. Yet, if they win... we all win big, mate, because the genre could really use some indie sandbox making a big splash.
Going back to the voting example: in RL it makes a lot of senses to support who you think is the right candidate, *AND* also bash who you think is the wrong candidate, because for your candidate to win you need the other guy to lose; typical case of zero-sum game. But in here, it seems that everybody has a lot to gain if one title (no matter which one) gives the whole MMO genre a kick in the rear. As you say, probably won´t be this one, but... who knows?
Wouldn´t it be awesome (even for you!) if the extremely unlikely happened, and you´re wrong?

I only vote for those that have a strong track record, and do not vote at all if there are no good choices. Lack of voting is my own way of saying no confidence, even if it is lost on the current political system. There is not much faith involved when you actually look at what decisions they have made in the past. Which is exactly why I say this ones track record is obscene, and if I can stop even one person from hesitating before throwing money at him I can only say its better for the community. Developers that act the way this one has acted are not worthy of your faith.
For this project, certainly not. It would just further lend credence that people like Ethan and Jason should actually be supported, which is absurd.
