I think they are going to try and make the entire open "frontier area" into one zone if they can pull it off.
As for The Depths itself, I'm sure that will have to be seperate from the other areas.
Mark has stated already that it will not be an instance, but I don't think that with his concept of The Depths being alive would work with it being just inside of a cave in the open world. From a technical standpoint, with walls and things that move and change, it would possibly create a lot of lag both inside the area and outside the area.
I think it will be just fine for The Depths itself to be a zone (non instanced) that you get to through an in world portal or something. It really makes more sense that way, since its going to be a zone based on a nightmare really, and would not fit in with the static world anyway.

yea thats true if the depths is meant to be underneath the rvr zone loading nearby players beneath you in the depths would cause un-needed server and pc strain. it would be great if all the the zones were seamless though but i think a portal/loading screen to and from the depths is reasonable, though if the depths instance was off to the side of the zone and never traveled underneath other players then theres no reason why it couldn't work. might make for some good fun at the entrance when it switches hands, however that works.
Actually I will be expecting a very complex architecture design of The Depth integrated into rvr frontiers if it is a single zone. Like Doom 2 map or a death star kind of design.
- we can give special zoning to a safe area of the Depths to the realm that owns it, but in addition...
- imagine abling to tunnel or build descending platforms and ladders from the open lands above to the Depths below
- destructible terrains or structures in the open lands can also lead into certain areas of the Depths
I will be honest: I do not understand exactly what the original poster means by "one single zone" and would need clarification.
Does he mean seamless, as in the RvR areas connect directly to The Depths without a load screen? Does he mean that The Depths not be a distinct area separated geographically from the general RvR areas, so somehow this is all combined?
Maybe akhng can explain further why the depths and the frontier should be one zone. I don't get what's the problem with a loadingscreen is. The depths can get captured and then, access is granted for the capturing realm only. This is a good thing, it allows the realm who owns TD to set up some traps before the maybe more populated realm presses on and recaptured TD from them. When TD doesn't have well defined entrances, so that as soon as it is captured or even before, other realms can dig into it, the reward of capturing TD is reduced, since you won't be able to drive the enemy realms out of it.

1) Mark Jacobs has told people not to up their pledges and just pledge what tier they want so there is that. I'd just stick with your current pledge
2) We know The Depths won't be instanced. Whether there will be a loading screen is something that would have to be figured out sometime but probably later than within the next 19 days.

I think if its done in that manner it cannot be used to equalize a server that is very one sided.
having it a locking zone they can limit the lopsidedness....
also, it will be used to instill conflicts to 'open' it.
else it may be the only place anything happens....leading to a dead world elsewhere

TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.

It's a nice idea but as others have said it would probably stretch PC resources and impact on all aspects of pvp.
A DF approach is fine I would say.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy

So I'd say keep your money.
