but dude, this is a huge annoucement, cause apparently, someone ripped gamers off before and now wants to be extremly clear, they won;t do it,,, again ?Mind blown
I'll ignore the whole "ripped off" thing but really Dren, can you point to one MMO developer who has promised to release both binaries and, if we can, source at the onset of the project if/when the day comes that we have to shut it down? Besides, even if you can point to one, I can point to 99.9% of them that haven't promised to do that. In terms of WAR, well, I'm not part of EA now so I can say what I want, do what I want with the code, etc. I know you understand the difference between being an employee of a company and owning it yourself as I do CSE. Even at Mythic I had investors. And in terms of it being "a huge announcement", that's why I didn't seek any coverage for it, no press, etc., it was just a project update. Besides, I even said in the text along with these promises that it wasn't a big update.
a. I could care less about binaries.
b. I was talking about the disclaimer of not ripping people off, everyone matters, and bugs will be fixed.
1. It is very easy to type words when there's no game to back them up with.
2. I support this project, but not eh manner it has been conducted.
3. Every developer states your the disclaimer .
c. I think you worked at EA for so long, that it has really messed up the sense of what is important to GAMERS. Gamers aren't not people who will sit around and lap up this on going "word" campaign without seeing some kind of return on those words.
Every word that has been typed from update 1-18 is potential fodder when and if the game doesn't meet the GAMERS expectations.
I will probably get banned again for being as REAL as I can be to someone who deserves better from the industry, but again, my harsher then soft hand approach isn't something most people would won;t to read.
This is a whole new level to make a game for GAMERS, instead of a dollar bill.
I'm really confused here, sorry, but as our updates have shown we've created two racial models (hopefully a third today, if not tomorrow), multiple engine updates with current models, concept art, etc. So, I'm not sure why you think this campaign has been all words. BTW, this week we will hopefully have two more tech updates to show as well.

Originally posted by Niix_Ozek It's pretty neat to release the binaries, but question is it only Available to the backers or everyone that plays? However with games like these the problem is they are only working properly with a certain level of people playing, without population they are useless, else I would be playing daoc yards right now. So neat can look at the code, but running your own instance of the game at home kinda pointless though not sure that would be the goal of people who want the binaries
The release would allow people to run their own servers, much like the free shards do. Obviously, the source code would allow for updates to the game but the binaries would allow anyone who wanted to the ability to set up a free shard and allow anyone to log in and play the game in the state it was in at the time of the shutdown.

How do opensource projects prevent malicious code being inserted into their code? Apparently by having people who care about their reputation vouching for it.
Edit: Or are you saying that open source projects are more infested by exploits than closed source software by nature? Kinda not how i see it ...

It's not going to happen until 1. the game is funded and goes live and 2. the game shuts down at the end of its life cycle. IOW nothing to worry about right now or for years to come. It will be up the people who take the source code and try to develop their own version of CU after the original shuts down to make sure there are no exploits.
Originally posted by GreenHell The only problem I have with this whole thing is that if he sells CSE than nothing he posted there will matter. Small developers get bought up all of the time. If you don't believe that companies like EA and SOE are watching to see what happens with KS games and these small developers your crazy.
Do you really think he'd sell anything to EA after his experiences with them? The guy's entire reputation and career are going to be riding on this game as soon as the kickstarter finishes.
True, this is different because small dev houses get bought up all the time because they are holding to their publisher (and or investors). MJ has created a lone wolf scenerio and I can't see a single reason for him (less a publisher offers massive amount of money of course) to sell out to one of the big publishers when he has his full control plus has unlimited room to grow. When you are your own master, you know true freedom. I don't think MJ is in this to flip CSE, I can see this as MJ's job till retirement.

Clearly Mark should have had the entire game finished before he posted the KickStarter. How can anyone trust him to make a game if he hasn't already made it?
Everyone and I mean every single person on this Earth has a price.
Not true. You can give me as much money as you want, i will never kill somebody else.
And there are plenty of people believing in their religion enough to stay true to their principles, no matter the amount of money you give and what principle you ask to break.
Beside, if you take a look at the comment section of that update on KS you can see MJ answered in an E-mail than he wouldn't sell the game to EA (comment post 3 hours ago by the time i write this post).
Agreed. Sentiments like that just serve to make those suffering moral bankruptcy feel better about themselves.
I'm sorry you felt I was just talking about money. I wasn't.

Lord British had the concept coded and he got his money very fast.
Lord British spent 30 million dollars to go into space. Just sayin.
