Originally posted by Jorev A tad desperate is a huge understatement. SOE is freaking panicking. At this point they are throwing everything at the wall and praying something sticks, in order to attract some customers to EQ2.
Interesting way of criticizing all the new content and ideas they are implementing into the game now, that for whatever UNKNOWN reason (a likely guess is that the game was rushed) they did not have at release.
The content they had planned. The tradeskills badly needed tweaking (and got it). The expansions they had planned. The soloability was announced long before release....
Besides the PvP announcement, which was arguably inevitable in some form, I fail to see how SOE has, *ahem* "flip-flopped" on anything. Seems to me they were just adding stuff they promised from day 1. The only difference between EQ2 and every other MMO I've played, is that they seem to be doing it on a reasonable time schedule, and on top of that they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it overall. Compared to any other MMO I've played, they're doing an outstanding job of it.
As a matter of fact, every patch seems well thought out and almost no one is crying "nerf" like I have seen plastered all over every other game's messageboards every time they have to adjust some spells or something. All their spell adjustments so far have been close enough to balanced to not require immediate additional patches to un-"fix" whatever was done before, and I see that all the time in other games.
Do you play the game at all, and if so, have you ever played any other? SOE isn't alone in ripping features of other games, FYI. They weren't even the first ones to do it.

SOE touted EQ2 as a mainly group oriented game, always did. Yes they said you could solo in it, but anyone who played the game knows that the environment was solo hostile and still is. They are now realizing the folly of creating a game designed primarily for grouping because of lower than expected revenues. That is a flipflop.
They always stated that PvP would not be part of the game design and now they think they can just squeeze it in and make it work, another flipflop.
Even though I don't like EvE online for various reasons, I give them credit for sticking to their original game philosophies and being content with a smaller playerbase.
SOE is all about the money, and are less interested in supporting a vision, than doing whatever it takes to increase subscription rates, for better or worse.

I wont' spend too much time criticizing your uninformed opinion, as it's painfully obvious to anyone who's been in the game more than a few days that PvP was part of the plan all along, just not at launch.
Or I suppose you think they just slapped the Arenas into both starting cities as a last-minute type thing? Aye, they often do that with level design and game art... not. Care to ask a few beta people if those Arenas were there from the start? How about alpha? Get some accurate info and then come back and post again.
SOE is a company like any other. Go meet some of the devs and find out what their vision is for the game, then come back here and insult them for being soulless corporate greedmongers. If those programmers wanted big bucks they would have gone to work elsewhere.
In short, get a clue.

Perhaps I have some misconceptions, and if they are misconceptions please correct me (if you can do it in a polite manner).
I am under the impression that the access quests are generally not soloable, and open up zones that are not soloable. That seems like good group content to me (repeatable instances usually equals fat XP and mad loot). Has that been changed? I also have gotten several quests in my short time playing that I absolutely could not solo. It also seems to me that there are lots of spots where heroic mobs spawn, as well as "boss" mobs in most zones that would be suicide to pull solo at a level where you can comfortably solo on most of the wandering mobs there. In all, it seems like somewhere around 25% of the content is group only if you want to do it before it's gray. Maybe there was a lot more group only content before? I've only been playing for a few days.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Originally posted by fission25 Good for solo'ing? Perhaps, but it seems far far Worse for small groups, and just grouping in general now. I actually liked how EQ2 was going before these latest changes. Is it just me or does it seem that not only did they get rid of most the herioc creatures but they severly lowered the creatures as well, not level but how they fight. I started an alt the other day to play with my brother, since I was over at his place for the weekend. Got to 10 and completed the class quest in 3 hours and then realized that they had gotten rid of most the heriocs. :-( That was bad enough but what was worse was that it only took me another 2 hours to get to 15. So the 2 of us, a cleric and a crusader went looking for some things to fight at 14 and 15. Unfortunatly nothing I could find over near antonica was worthwhile. Everywhere I used to go was now indivduals. A group of 6 gnolls, one would think would be herioc , but now they were an individual 15. Took us about 30 seconds to kill all 6. More and more time spent running around looking for something to kill and more and more disappointments. Finally we decided to try hunting higher levels, hoping for something that would challenge us. We didn't find it. The 2 of us at 14 and 15 took out the level 20 giant kodiaks and hulking stalkers with ease. Unfortunatly we only recieved about 1 percent per kill. So, we decided to try and solo some, just to test what we could do... Now, we raised these two up in a matter of hours and they had pretty much no armor, just the generic from the island and one or two quick quests... at 15 I solo'd the level 20 giant kodiak! What is happening to this game? So we went to Stormhold to group there. It was a lot more popular than normal, but we managed to do decently well with the lower level entrance area. That was of course when we got to fight, which wasn't that often because of the number of trains led to the zone... Trains in EQ2? Yup, Tons of them! While not all of them bothered us, a few of the higher levels did attack us on their way back. It was okay but not anything great, and while we did manage to get a few others in the group, they ended up leaving not long after, so we decided to try our luck in BB. What a mistake! While hunting the heriocs there was fun and a challenge, the amount of people solo'ing and then running back to zone made it one dissaster after another. The two of us couldn't handle all the adds from the trains so we got a few more people... We were talking a little and I noticed that 2 of them were quite young, I know sometimes I get a few younger people in the group so didn't think much about it at the time. A little while later, after having taken the time to explain, time and time again, how to hunt in a group and not to just attack things on their own I learned that one of them, a wizard, was 9 years old and the other was 13. btw, they loved the new changes to solo'ing. By the end of a full 10+ hours of playing we had 5 deaths, 12 horrible groups, a minimum of 9 early teenagers or younger and to many trains to count. We later got on some of our older chars to check them, I chose a 29 mystic, and my brother a 26 swashbuckler to see if they changed the older levels as well... Yup, my mystic could solo 29s that I used to group for nearly non-stop. His swashbuckler took 3 levels up solo with little problem, only a small bit of downtime with eating and drinking. Whats next for EQ2? A free Trial of the Isle with every Happy Meal? Anyone know of a decent game with an actually challenge for gameplay and perhaps a slightly more social community? Fission
FFXI or the ORIGINAL Everquest. The two BEST MMOs out there in my opinion.
I may be swichin back to the ol EQ 1 soon, boy i miss that game....

PLEASE SOE MAKE A CLASSIC EQ SERVER. Shadow of luclin was a prick in EQs side. PoP Was a gun to the face.
Originally posted by Aelraz That's some pretty interesting ideas you got there Ano. The way I understood it you mean that there basically should be 3 different types of "xp" and leveling in one system (solo for example) wont raise your ability in the other areas. Sounds interesting, even though I prefer regular grouping about 90% of my gametime. But as you state, this would involve some heavy work for the devs and they will surely prefer the "mixed shortcut". But IMHO EQ2 should focus on grouping and let WoW handle the soloers. Though I understand why they seem a tad desperate to please the soloers, since most players seem to prioritize solobility. It's all about the $$$.
WoW dont handle the soloers, they handle the casuals. And they do it in a weird way that even the casuals will grow bored...levels caps that bring you down to the level in questions and local way of earning uberness would be far more efficient to please casuals and everyone in the long run.
I always prefer grouping over soloing. The question is not there...but the question is...what is available for me when I log in? Let say, 70% of the time an appealing group, 5% of the time an appealing raid, 25% of the time I am jamned in solo, it better be nice or I will log...and I will become more and more impatient, less and less waiting LFG...hehe
Having good solo in a game improve your grouping potential, as players are online longer and more available for grouping. Of course players will refuse some group offer, it is not a weakness, it is a strong point, the players are happy enought to refuse what they feel is not appealing...If you have a starving man, he will eat anything...if you have a well feed man, he may decline some meals and make personnal choices that are not always the more healthy choices, yet, he have the choice, he is happy, he is coming back and enjoying it all the more. It is a QUALITY vs QUANTITY concept in the short term, however, in the long run, it is my belief that if the quality is choosen, it will also improve massively the quantity, in the long run. If solo is an option, then a player will CHOOSE quality groups unless he feel helpfull, which is all for the best of the game. And...if a player MAX an aspect of the game...it still leave 2+ aspect to MAX...and at the next expension they will have to ask themselves again if they want to resume the first aspect or keep going on another...which is the type of interesting questions you want to throw at your players.
I always said it, solo uberness belong to soloer...group uberness belong to grouper...casual uberness belong to casual(ruling in Crushbone I mean)...and everything else peoples developp a significant interest for should be considered for full developpment. So yes, raiding uberness to raiders. But a raider should lack in solo until he earn his solo edges, yet, spoiled and corrupted persons resists what is legitimate...if someone dont earn it, he dont deserve it...killing Quarm v17.04 is quite an achievement and deserve a proper reward, which should not affect anyone in Najena. Also dont forget, it is easier to hand over more candies in such a setting, as candies have a more limited effect, yet, they are all worth it for someone that take the time to earn them.
Althought it is a lot of work, I am not the right person to realize or consider if it is out of hand or within the reach limit of a magnificant company like SoE. So everytime they bump stuff about solo friendliness, I assume they are ready for such work and come checking...and everytime I sigh and realize they are just lying...all this work spent in lying...See, no matter how hard you will try to convince me, CoH achieve far more then EQ on those topics(which is why I play CoH)...I dont think Cryptic can even think of competing with SoE on the amount of work they can throw.
Nourborne: Sorry for my sentences. Nah, if anything PvP scare me and put me on alert to make sure the game wont turn into a PvP enforced fest. What bring me back is exactly what this topic is about... All the FALSE claims about better solo.
