Looking for a time killer

BrachusBrachus Member UncommonPosts: 97

I seem to have a lot of spare time in my days at the moment. I work from home and the nature of my job has some lapses between assignments. I am in 1 of those lapses for the near term and would like an MMO to take up some of my spare time through the day. I'm not looking for anything very action oriented as I will still need to be able to step away for calls and meetings sporadically. I'm thinking something with a lot of exploration or in depth crafting...the kind of game where I can sit and just fish for an hour if I like.

I'd prefer something F2P as I already have a couple other games I pay for, but they don't easily allow for me to just walk away when I get a call or have a meeting. Sandbox or themepark doesn't really matter...just need a time sink for a while...

I will list a couple of games below that are F2P and decent in my mind. You can also visit a few popular websites with a bunch of different f2p games, www.aeriagames.com and www.perfectworld.com. Now there are many others, but those should keep you busy for a long while. Steam has around 30 free games too, most of them are pretty bad but there are a few there as well that are decent.

    Tera - MMORPG - tera.enmasse.com

    Warframe - 3PS - Steam F2P client download

Lord of the Rings - MMORPG - www.lotro.com

    Everquest 1 - MMORPG - www.sony.com

    Everquest 2 - MMORPG - www.sony.com

    Planet SIde 2 - MMOFPS - www.sony.com

Not sure if you've tried League of Legends. I was holding out forever but my sister of all people talked me into finally trying it and its a ton of fun, as long as you stay away from the ultra competative types.

Stick to games against AI bots till you learn a couple characters and then go into games against other players. Everyone talks about getting good on intermediate BOTs but I find that humans are more prone to mistakes and over-extending than the advanced BOTs are heheh..

There is also Mechwarrior online thats in open beta if FPS is more your style, or world of tanks.

World of Warplanes or War Thunder if your into flyers

Path of Exile for a diablo-esque type game.

    All free to play

And heres one not free, but I have sunk over 120 hours into already since I bought it.. Sim City. While I despise EA, the game is hard to put down lol.

I've played Tera and LOTRO. Tera just never really held my attention and I've moved on from LOTRO at this point. I've never tried EQ2. How is the F2P version of it?

For a time waster i cannot stress enough to DL and try Warframe. It is such a blast to play and contrary to what some of the players say it can be played just Free without dropping a cent on it.

    Lolipops !

League of Legends is fun, but I generally despise the community. I play a lot of MWO right now, but it doesn't really work out as something I can do through the day. I don't want to be that guy who goes AFK all the time and hurts my team every time I get a call from work. Path of Exile may be an option. I'll take a look at it.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and toss out Eden Eternal, because I don't think anyone else is going to. It practically has timekiller written on it in big, bold letters. It's a disgustingly cute F2P with an elaborate crafting and job system.

If you find yourself needing to do something in the middle of playing, you can enter your guild's town with the click of a button and gather or craft. Most dungeons also have a solo version, in which no one would be inconvenienced if you went AFK.

As for exploration, GW2 was very exploration-based and it's possible to cap characters exclusively via crafting if that's your thing. It would be a bit difficult to go AFK in random areas, though.

G'luck finding what you're looking for.

So I played EQ2 for a little bit, got to around level 30ish or so. I played a Wood Elf Ranger, their f2p system is nice. It doesn't unlock everything for you and limits you on the type of skills/spells you can learn. For example if you learn an adept version of a spell if you play f2p it may not allow you to learn the master version or something like that. You would want to switch to P2P once you get to the higher levels so you can be competetive. But the majority of the game can be cleared in the F2P version. EQ 1 F2P is done amazingly well, they have hot spots to get you up in level quicker and AI to group with you for faster killing etc.

I would advise against League of Legends, its a good game if you play against the AI. However unless you play with individuals that know your play style and can communicate well, then its a lost cause. MOBA's lack a lot of fun value for casual gamers because the hardcore crowd tends to expect perfection. I am a casual gamer myself and I get beyond mad if someone on my team feeds regardless of what you tell them. League of Legends is such a love/hate relationship because the game can be really good if you happen to join a game with like minded individuals.

You can always give Granada Espada (Sword 2) a go. It's a bit different but fun, if you get hooked up.

Thanks to everyone for their input so far!

I took a look at Eden Eternal as someone suggested, and it is just too disgustingly cute for me to stomach. I have downloaded EQ2 and Vanguard to give them a try. If neither 1 of them seems to be for me, then I may try Warframe. Feel free to keep throwing out more suggestions and again thank you for all the input so far!
