Well, right now TRION is not showing anything of their competence like they had with RIFT.
DEFIANCE and RIFT feels like they have been made by two completely different companies.
Oh, the guy who made this review gave Diablo 3 a 9.5.
Clearly Trion didnt pay them as much lol.
Yeah there we go again. Low scores by default means Trion didn't pay them enough. Maybe they didn't pay anyone in that case because they are getting average ratings across the board.
What are the chances that game is actually mediocre in its current state? but no it has to be that critics are just looking for a pay day.
They still rated it higher than Angry Joe though. lol
Well, for starters, you have things like what Im posting below in the review:
" Rather than the addictive, "Where did the day go?" sort of experience I had when I started out my adventures in World of Warcraft and Star Wars: The Old Republic"
then
" the vast intervening stretches are filled with some of the dullest and most repetitious quest design I’ve experienced in an MMO"
then
"It’s really a shame that the encounters aren’t more fun, too, because it would have helped make it easier to look past the side quests, which range from mediocre to awful. Most boil down to the most derivative sort of fetching – find and activate three generators, locate three clues, kill 10 enemies... the stuff MMOs are frequently made fun of for."
Now here's the thing. The same things they are complaining about Defiance having, and at least partially giving it lower scores for, are the exact same things that you do in games that this reviewer is praising and that they gave high scores too. Seriously. Defiance gets knocked because it has kill & fetch quests... yet its amazing and fun in WoW, SWTOR, WAR, and various other games in which the majority of their content consists of kill this, fetch that, interact with some other thing.
Defiance released in 2013..maybe people are sick of just bland fetch and kill quests and want a little more to it? yes basic tasks will always be the same but when recent games like GW2 and TSW tried to spice things up i am sure Trion could have tried a little harder here. They didn't even make an effort and just piled up one mission over the other. When the devs have no interest in making quests interesting ca,'t blame players for knocking it down.
SWTOR, WOW and WAR didn't release this year.
SWTOR released less than a year and a half ago, and they praise the game. Diablo 3 (which this guy gave a 9.5 to) released in the past year (and consisted mainly of killing stuff and picking up loot while replaying the same short storyline over and over again). Sorry but games havent changed in that year and a half, hell theyve barely changed in 10 years. Regardless of the time between the releases of the games, these things are mechanics of just about any game. Not something that changes and becomes dated with advances in technology, like graphics. Any game (aside from specific niches like dancing, singing, sports games, etc) is going to consist of things like killing enemies, fetching items, interacting with / triggering objects. Remove those things and you would have a game that consists of staring at a screen doing nothing.
A review should be based on the merits of the game itself, not based on wether or not theyre bored with doing something because they did it in a different game a year ago. If that is the situation and a reviewer can no longer differentiate between his own bias and boredom of an entire genre of games vs the actual offerings of an individual game, this person should no longer be doing official reviews for a company.
Really not sure how or why you are defending such behavior
Diablo is not a MMO. So i don't know why you are mentioning that.
SWTOR released 1 year and 7 months ago. I don't blame people for having better expectations after playing games like GW2 and TSW when it comes to fetch and kill tasks. Standards have been raised and Trion failed to reach those standards.
I disagree that games have barely changed in last 10 years. Baisc prinicples are the same but that doesn't MMOS have not tried to improve on dated concepts.
Defiance has some good things about it (shooter mechanics and progression for instance) but when a game is being pulled down by boring missions, bugs, patcher and connectivity issues it is hard to ignore it while giving a final score.
Defiance is getting average of 5 to 6/10. Which means game isn't horribly bad but in its current state it is average and mediocre. How it will improve in future depend supon Trion.
I am defending his right to give his opinion...just like how you have the right to defend Trion and Defiance at every given step. I would rather back up the guy who is prudent and reasonable and can see the faults in the game than someone who has his blinders on and can never accept that Defiance actually has many flaws.
Diablo 3 was mentioned because, you know, they dont just review MMOs, and the fact that it was reviewed by this same person.
You might want to recheck your math. SWTOR was released in Decemeber 2011. Thats 1 year 5 months (this is April, not June).
I find it hilarious that you think anyone who doesn't share your opinion has blinders on and think they are defending Trion and Defiance "at every given step". Did I even so much as mention what I personally rate the game at or deny that the game has flaws? Please, tell me where I did that. It will be very entertaining.
I know the game has flaws. Ive pointed them out and submitted my feedback through several months now of alpha, beta, and live play time. But this was a discussion about the review given, and my input about how ridiculous IGN's "reviews" are. Not an in depth list of problems that exist in the game.
IMO While it's okay to read reviews of games released. never take them for face value until you personally have played the game. An individua'ls experience may be wholly different from a reviewrs for good or bad. We all have different likes and dislikes.
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes

They are lucky they have the TV show running along right now. Gives them a tad more time to get their act together!
If they can't get it sorted out before the first season of the TV show ends.... then this game is finished, if people won't already leave in droves before that.... as the majority currently cannot even watch the TV show by normal means. So those have even less reason to stick it out right now.

I never said anything negative, in fact I dont think Ive said anything at all about Angry Joe's review. I only made it about 1/3 of the way through it before I got bored to death (ok there I said something negative about it), so never bothered commenting on it. I think youre thinking of the Eurogamer review.
What list did IGN provide? You mean the 3 things listed next to the score, 1 of which was "Bad quest design" because they have the same kill / fetch quests as every MMO? As said before, this is a full on negative for Defiance.
Yet meanwhile in the world of SWTOR, it was given a 9 for Gameplay even though that 9 was right next to: "A little quest variety wouldn’t go astray, though."
WAR - also a 9 for gameplay, yet: "Public quests are a blast, and it doesn't feel like you're grinding to advance in experience." (Public quests were made up of.... you guessed it! Kill 100 of this mob for stage 1. Fetch these 20 items for Stage 2. Kill this champion or hero for stage 3. On to the next PQ...repeat.)
Please explain the logic behind that. A complete negative for Defiance, yet those games, and others, receive 9s for having the same exact type of content.

Yes Rift was polished at launch, but it was a single platform game - PC only, and it is a straight up MMORPG (wow clone at launch got a lot better with updates), based off gamebryo engine.
Now consider Defiance, - 3 platforms, in-house game engine, its a shooter not a traditional MMO, cowritten with SyFy with a hard launch date!
Apples and Oranges, if Defiance was a wow clone on a single platform, do you think it would be more polished at launch?
Yes Defiance has issues, but it is FAR more ambitious of a game technically than Rift if you consider multiple platforms, hard launch with SyFy and cowritten with a TV show.
Since when is multi platform a green light to release mediocre games?
Pretty much every decent game engine out there supports all platform these days and require little to no extra effort anymore to release games on multiple platforms.
If TRION decides to use an inhouse build engine, lacks the proper expertise to release a decent game on multiple platforms and fall flat on their faces. That is not my problem! Sorry... with the budget they had, they then should have licensed a proper game engine instead then.
And game cowritten with SyFy is far more ambitious?? If you call adding a couple pursuits (achievements) into the game every week an ambitious task....lol.
Sorry.... gamers look at their wallet and when a game carries the MMO tag (which DEFIANCE does), then it gets compared to other MMO's.
Lets put it another way. Both Guild Wars 2 and DEFIANCE are B2P MMO games. Both boxes cost 60 bucks at launch.
Guild Wars 2 blows DEFIANCE out of the water content, feature and social wise. Just the human city of Divine Reach alone covers half the entire map in DEFIANCE.
I rest my case. Sorry! But there is NO excuse for the game to be released in the state it did! I mean... no working chat system? In a multiplayer game? please! /Facepalm
PS. Artists, content designers, map designers, class designers, etc don't write and maintain game engines and tools. It's a completely seperated team responsible for the game engine itself and the tools.
IGN are well known for useless reviews and poor editorial. When rating a MMO at launch most professional reviewers don't include bugs or connection issues into account for scoring. They should still be reported on certainly, but factoring them into the score is poor form.
If I am being completely objective I would give the game a 6.7-7. However, because of my personal preference for games that deviate from the traditional MMO formula and my love for Tabula Rasa it's more like an 8.5 for me.

Opinion.
Defiance is a shooter, GW2 is not. I can go on how in Defiance you can blow off a head with a sniper rifle or blast a mutant off a rooftop with a double barrel shot to the gut, and then watch the body tumble. Physics in Defiance and shooting blows anything away in GW2... But again apples and oranges. The core gameplay is VASTLY different between 2 games.
You have no idea how difficult it is to develop for 3 different platforms, you have to pass a certification process from Microsoft to have a game on Xbox, there is additional cert process for live.
Sony has its own cert process.
And guess what - all of these are Regional, so EU Sony has its own certification.
Little code changes? Defiance is not a simple single player game, its not just client you run in your PC, Xbox or PS.
Try making network code that will work on all 3 platforms for an MMO game.
Also to work on Microsoft network you have to go through Microsoft's Xbox live gateway servers.
Please - simple code changes to run on all 3 platforms? That's so far from the truth in case of Defiance its not even funny.
Then they should have licensed Unreal Engine 3 or any other major engine out there.
Those are already pre-certified for all platforms.... greatly speeding up the cert processes at game's completion.
All major engines have unified tools, so you can create and publish games and future content for all platforms at once!
So again! In this time and age Multiplatform is no longer an excuse to release a mediocre game.
Take it or leave it!
TRION blew me away with RIFT! TRION highly dissapointed me with DEFIANCE! And that's it.
And before saying any more.... I happen to like AND play a lot of game genres, especially FPS and RPG games.
Its a very mediocre game and noone that have spent time in this game should disagree. Sure its fun. This aint the 1st mediocre game to be fun.
But it has to many issues to give it high score, hench why you see the bad score across the board. Some of the people that give it mediocre score even say they had fun, but cant justify a high score in its current state
Same EXACT review by the same person. Word for word.

I really don't want to go looking through your post history but you had similar recation to other reviews too which gave Defiance average score. And that is strange coming from someone who says that he is aware that Defiance has its flaws. (no that i buy it even for a minute).
IGN isn't the only one that mentioned the boring missions in Defiance. There are 14 more reviews which gave Defiance mediocre scores and they all mentioned the kill and fetch boring missions.. And i thought we already discusses SWTOR, WAR in previous post? like i sid earlier, quests standards have been raised since last year by TSW and GW2. What worked couple of years back or 8 years back may not work now. Can not blame players and critics to expect something better.
So please get angry at IGN by all means when other 14 reviews are saying the same thing.

I like it so far. Had more fun in this than PS2 and GW2. Funny because I din't care to much about this game...but if it keeps me going for 1 month it lastet longer then moste other mmos.
i feel sorry for anyone who takes reviews from IGN seriously. they are one of the last gaming sites i would listen to. i guess trion didnt gift the reviewer with any "presents."

Again, it is the same review article posted for both versions. Yet somehow.... 2 different scores and 2 different lists of pros & cons for the same game...
What are you going on about?
The PS3 version got less because the performance, as in frames per second, the graphics (textures, resolution, etc.) are worse on the PS3 than on the PC (with at least the recommended system setup).
It makes perfect sense that they should be reviewed seperately and that there are differences. They are two completely different clients. The pros and cons are a limited summary of the most important issues, the same things were said in the actual written reviews about the questing and the polish for both versions of the game so that appllies to the PS3 version as well. The performance issues and the lackluster graphics, compared to the PC version, is why it has a lower score.
The reviewer is saying it's 'slightly' better on the PC.. I don't see how that's so hard to understand.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
Yeah that's kind of high, I would gitve it a 5. Look arcross the board at all the reviews and most hover around 5-6. It does a few things well and fun, but there are an enormous amount of issues and poor development choices that have resulted in an extremely mediocre game.
I personaly dont care who gives what kind of score to this game. I play the game I love the game. End of story and if a person wants to stay away from the game because of someone else is review and dont want to give it a try and see what the game is really about then it is their lost. MY score 10/10.
I'm giving the game around 65 / 100. I barely login nowadays. I really wanted to like the game. I liked the show altho it is kinda cliche and predictable but that's cool. Unfortunately the game just can't hold my attention much longer. The fetch/fedex quests are boring. The only saving grace is that the few main storyline missions / dungeons are interesting enough and it's the game's only saving grace. I haven't tried PVP yet or the shadow wars then again I'm not a big pvper. I'm not quitting (since there's no subscription) but hopefully future content patches will fix things up. Did I mention the perks are boring too and lacks synergy with each of the 4 main skills. I do love the weapon choices. Maybe in the future we can get melee weapons - like a charged blade seen in the show - since there's a whole bunch of perks that relates to melee.
Looks like we got our review and honestly I think its a good review. If you people continue to support these poor excuses for mmos then thats all we are going to get.
This poor excuse for an MMO has already given me more entertainment and enjoyment than the following MMOs combined...
SWTOR - IGN gave them a 9.6 and of course the game was a massive flop
AoC - IGN gave it a 7.9 and of course the game was a massive flop
Aion - IGN gave it an 8.5 and of course the game was a massive flop
Fallen Earth - IGN gave it an 8.1 and of course the game was a massive flop
I'll gladly continue to support a poor excuse for an MMO that I enjoy rather than the "True" MMOs out there that I find boring as hell.
Currently I play APB, Rift, GW2, Defiance and PS2. There are some games like WoW and EVE that simply aren't my cup of tea but most like TERA and FFXIV simply aren't worth my time.
When giving 9.6, 7.9, ... they do not care if will/could be big flop.
About Swtor .. net really. Did not live up to expectations, but is still 2nd for stable sub number (I do not care if lagging lot behind Wow which is game not even Blizzard would be ever able to repeat its success). And is still my best game along with Wow. And Swtor had great start, no bugs (could not care less for pvp and Illum however), incredible story, ... 7.9 is also imo ok for Aoc. Great, fun, original game, ... but BUGGY. However I do not think bugs count in given number. Aion good game I will never play again. But not because game itself but because terrible infestation from boots and alike and because I had to change my MasterCard to stop them charging me over and over every month .... Etc.
Before patch 5/10 but after patch i will give it 4/10 and i am still being generous because blowing things is fun but bugs are really spoiling that too. I lost my purple and orange weapons, progression on my LMG and roller got reset back to 0 from 18, voice chat is still bugged and chat box now stays on for whole 10 secs instead of 3. And this is just handful of problems introduced by latest patch.
I guess if critics had reviewed the game after latest patch the scores would have gone down even more.
Well if the episode on tuesday of Defiance is anything to go by, then if that is their best, then i don't think there will be a second season, i'll probably watch the next episode to see if it improves, but by the sound of it, even a Mediocre scoring from IGN, means the game is probably better than the TV show
Maybe they should have put Trion in charge of the TV show production

Yea, multiple resourses review it as mediocre - good

Almost lost a mouthful of coffee on that one. lol

The show is horrible.
Some of the people that give it mediocre score even say they had fun, but cant justify a high score in its current state
This should be good for a laugh from some of you:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/...ance-review-pc
Notice anything?
Same EXACT review by the same person. Word for word.
PS3 version:
5.2
+Fun deathmatch
– Performance issues
– Lackluster graphics
– Poor AI
PC version:
5.9
+Fun multiplayer
– Bad quest design
– Polish issues
– Poor AI
Again, it is the same review article posted for both versions. Yet somehow.... 2 different scores and 2 different lists of pros & cons for the same game...
"The problem is that the hardcore folks always want the same thing: 'We want exactly what you gave us before, but it has to be completely different.'
-Jesse Schell
"Online gamers are the most ludicrously entitled beings since Caligula made his horse a senator, and at least the horse never said anything stupid."
-Luke McKinney
I like it so far. Had more fun in this than PS2 and GW2. Funny because I din't care to much about this game...but if it keeps me going for 1 month it lastet longer then moste other mmos.

Personally I dont put much stock in reviews done by ign. I have been playing defiance and enjoying it . The tv show also is a nice change.
The thing about defiance I have worked out is its not like other mmos witch is a good. It's different and people hate difference .
The story is good and I enjoy playing .
Its not totally perfect and the reliance of the cash store is a little disappointing .
But it's better then the mmo crap that seems to be cropping up.
Its young and trion are good at taking what's young and making it better.
Current games;
Star treck online
Rift
Eve online
Firefall
Well if the episode on tuesday of Defiance is anything to go by, then if that is their best, then i don't think there will be a second season, i'll probably watch the next episode to see if it improves, but by the sound of it, even a Mediocre scoring from IGN, means the game is probably better than the TV show
Maybe they should have put Trion in charge of the TV show production
