Alright, so from what Ive seen so far, you cannot be attacked in or near town. There is plenty to do, mine, PvE, gather, craft, etc. all in safezone. If you are a newb that just runs straight out of the safezone without spending any time building up your character, then you have a good chance of being killed for the heck of it. If you are a newb that hunts things in the safezones (bears, zombies, spiders) and spends a little time crafting, maybe even join a clan, then you probably wont be messed with. Especially if you travel in numbers. I happen to be in a rather large clan, so I never have that problem.. Playerbase is very friendly for the most part. You might see a hater or two, just ignore them.
the specific axample i was referring to was when someone posted a guide that recommended hags as being a good place for newer players to get prowess. immediately afterwards, high prowess players began camping hag spawns to catch any newer players who might try to PvE there. i bring this up because it is mean spirited, cowardly, and quite damaging to the game's ability to retain new players if older players specifically target them.

essentially i just wanted to see what DFUW players on this site thought about things like this as a means to learn a bit more about the community, which is currently the only worry i have standing between AV and my money. :P

This is a PvP game, you have to embrace that.

If there's 3 players out there killing new players take 5 and kill them off and take their stuff. It happens all the time. If you tell players in chat that there are newbie killers at the hags you'll have real killers taking them down in a matter of minutes.

If you are a new player then be careful. Move to the edge of the safe area and look around. Don't travel right up the middle of the road where everyone can see you. Go beyond the safe area, but stay slow and cautious and you'll be out and safe.

They can't see you if you're cautious.

Not sure if they are playing in DFUW, but, there was a guild in DF dedicated to this type of behavior.  Weirdest thing, I was an out and about noob and got rolled by 5-6 guys.  I went back to my tombstone to see if they left anything when a couple different guys ride up on mounts.

    "F-ing Great ..... I'm gonna die again."

They procede to ask me what happened and if I'm alright.  "What?"  They said their guild patrols these woods to try to create an area safe from unwarranted attacks.  They asked for the name of the guild that attacked me, gave me supplies and gave me some gold.  I was floored .... only in DarkFall.

I can't for the life of me remember the name of the guild, but, in a game with zero safe zones I thought it was kinda cool.

I find myself logging into df more each day. I still think the ui is kinda poop but the game itself is immersive and different. Something else I like about it is that. They offer non recurring subs via paypal. It tells you they have some level of confidence that they will keep you, the subscriber coming back for more.

The community can be a big plus or a big minus depending on who you're with. What's funny is the game seems to attract 2 types of folks; the coolest. Most helpful folks ever and complete human turds.

So I see myself subbing past the free month? Id say I am like 75% towards yes.

Game runs like utter shit random crashes all the time lag spikes all the time takes 5 minutes to load game with it installed on ssd. I spent more time trying to actaully play then i did playing.  Might be good concept of a game but who ever made it does not know what they are doing. And dont dare make a post about your tech problems or you will be banned, I think they might even be paying steam to troll people and delete threads from people who post problems they and alot of people are having. Only threads they allow are ones that defend the game like its thier child. I would have rather bought 2 copies of War Z then this pile of crap bug infested game and War Z sucks but atleast it played.

I've heard countless stories like this from peoples' experiences in the original Darkfall.

Shortly after the first time I got jumped in Darkfall, I encountered a couple of my killers in an NPC city who started chatting me up and they returned everything they had looted off of my tombstone. They proceeded to grab stuff from the bank and simply gave them to me. I ended up with crazy powerful weapons and armor, a few mounts, and an offer to join their clan. I was quite surprised considering all the negative things I had heard both on these forums and the DF forums regarding the community.

The in-game community is vastly different from the forum community.

When dfuw came out, I played 8+ hours a day for several days without any contact from the outside world or even the darkfall forums. I was totally in love with the game. After those few days I went back to the forums expecting to see positive threads and other people as excited as I was. Nope. Typical forumfall. It was flooded with hyperbolic complaints about performance issues/missing mobs/whatever. These idiots have no sense of priority.

It's a great game but if you expect it to be even remotely similar to WoW you're in for a big disappointment. It's different in every possible way.

Most people bashing the game are people with low end PCs who can't run the game or get crashes every 10 minutes. I'd bitch and moan too in that situation. But if you have a half decent modern PC you won't have any problems.

The others bashing the game are old DF1 players who feel shafted because they can no longer afk bot to the top.

Darkfall is a great game but it's not for everyone.

All extreme things about DF are lie. I mean it's buggy, but not to the degree of unplayable. At least for majority. But some people (few but anyway) just can't beat those bugs and feel frustrated (and I understand them). I myself haven't still met any gamebreaking bug, and it looks like most people don't have them as well.

Server performance isn't great. Especially in weekends, when a lot of people are playing. But in other days (even in primetime) my ping is 45-60 and my DPS doesn't drop below 100 even in the most crowded areas (I have i5-3570, GF 670 GTS, 16 GB RAM).

Yes, a common excuse among the forumfall whiners too. There's a difference between constructive criticism, and CONSTANT whining while ignoring anything good about the game.

You know what else makes a game better? more people playing it. And if every post about the game is negative (and not rightly so!), it's going to deter a ton of people from playing it.

I agree with the OP. I never played Darkfall 1, and I was extremely skeptical about trying Unholy Wars. Luckily I decided to take the risk, and I have been enjoying it for the past week. No other MMO like it.

Do realize it is a bit different than typical MMO's. Like anything new, it will take some getting used to. But if you stick it out for atleast 4 hours to learn the ropes, you'll be hooked like me.

The reason behind people playing this outdated piece of crap in the year 2013 needs some scientific research.
  • FusionFusion Member UncommonPosts: 1,398

80% of the hate comes from old DF1 players that lost their advantage in PVP because their rigorously macroed & exploited max-stat characters were lost and they can no longer compete on an equal footing.

10% of the hate comes from people who get ganked, lose their stuff and ragequit (the WoW-generation/cellular generation).

the remaining percentage comes from those who haven't even tried the game and are just bashing for the sake of stirring shit, love their 'own game' and hate everything else.

It's a lot like Dark Souls (not gameplay wise), people praise it to the heavens (myself included) and others curse it to the abyss (because they're just incompetent, impatient and possibly broke their controller in frustration)

ps. no i'm not currently playing it, i beta'd it, but now i'm just going to let it 'mature' a bit before i hop in :)

So the possibilty of someone not liking bad graphics, poorly thought out systems and awkward controls does not exist?

Graphics.. a matter of opinion/taste. For me, not a reason for hating nor bashing.

Poorly thought out systems, care to be a little more specific? (i'm guessing 'because this doesn't work like it does in that game' it's poorly thought out?)

'awkward controls' seriously? If you cannot adapt, it's not the games fault. Took me about 2-3hrs of gameplay to learn the gimmicks of working the controls fluidly.

Darkfalls graphics are not bad.  Who are you to say the "systems" were poorly thought out.  Aside for the bags/storage, almost everything in UW is an improvement from Darkfall.  What awkward controls?  If you have something to say, say it.  These drive by hate comments are useless.  Disscussion threads in this forum are getting nothing but haters that contribute nothing to the conversation.

It's good, got a good concept and they released some patches recently that have allowed it to run a lot better on my pc. But I'm gonna wait for the other schools to come out and/or for them to balance the current selection. Still doesn't feel complete to me and the sight of 10:1 warriors to everything else makes my eyelid twitch.

Aw, please don't give me this "oh if you don't like it its because you are not good at it" agrument. It is the games fault that it sucks, just like DF1 did (ok, it is a bit improved, but still not a game for 2013). DF1 was so bad and anyone that argued about it was a "loser" and a "noob". Well, guess what? DF1 was pulled 3 years after release, with the servers shutdown. Why did this happen if it was so innovative and fun?

Funny thing is that Aventurine keeps pulling the same stunt and we are all falling for it again and again.
