Q: Why have you chosen a subscription-model? Are you insane? Everything is FTP and should be now and forever!
a) Because I don’t want to have to support the vast majority of players who never pay for their time in FTP games; b) Maybe, but I think it is the good kind of insane; c) There’s a major shakeout coming down the road (3-5 years max) in the FTP space whether people/publishers want to hear it or not (well, it’s not of course). Besides, we will get a tighter community with fewer people who actually really want to play and stick with our game as opposed to a large number of people who are playing until they have to pay or they find a different FTP that interests them.
What I mean by Multi-tier Subs is that it is not going to be one size fits all....
We did the discount thing too, if you play for 3 months, 6 months, a year... .
I think there are better ways to set up sub plans....
We'd love to have a family plan.
Let be clear about this , we are not looking at raising the sub rates.
We want to be lower than the average price.
Since we are not going to be a PvE game, we're not going to need as many developers, so we shouldn't charge as much.
I think it's fair. What other sub based game out there are you going to paly?I can't think of sone released now, or in the coming years that I would wanna sub to.
Previously I would have said with pride "FFXIV ARR"
After being in the beta...well...yeah.
Help get Camelot Unchained made, a old-school MMORPG, with no hand holding!

oh so smart!
Not.
Guess he does not know that in every MMO, players ARE THE CONTENT and he needs A LOT OF THEM
Even more so in an almost "no PVE" MMO.
At some point developers are desperate for more players, even FREE players, to bring in enough population mostly for the people who pay to have fun.

Low population -> MMO death.
F2P -> No socialisation -> No sustainable players, just F2P locusts -> MMO death.
Don't forget: DAoC is still P2P and is still alive.
If you don't wanna sub, back the project for $250 and you won't have to worry about sub. Just $1 a year, you can prolly manage that.

what is the reason CU is not B2P ?? Not sure if I should back a subscription only MMO which locks me out when I'm not constantly paying every month
If you enjoy the cash shop community of the F2P model, then thankfully for you, you have an endless variety of mmorpgs to choose from, many of which will aid you in your development of Korean and Mandarin. Be thankful for that. Meanwhile, there are those of us that want a dedicated community of gamers that know that their game is unique enough and has enough quality to be a subscription model.
Besides, where else other than Elder Scrolls Online will you find an updated 3 realm model where you actually fight races and classes that are different than you (had to say updated since Dark Age of Camelot has not been allowed to evolve or offer new server types)?
Where are you going to find a title that contains such a massive pvp crafting mechanism that you truly will be able to invest a bit of yourself into the title?
In other words, it's worth paying a sub for something that is in depth and of quality. Let the fast food industry of today's cash shop mmorpgs do their own thing - that won't be CU.
If any of that makes sense to you, then please enjoy the coming bar raising game that will be Camelot Unchained.

uh-huh because having to pay15 bucks flat fee a month makes people "social", everyone else not paying or less paying is a locust, got it.
you know what these UC people have this "then go elsewhere" attitude, I'll just follow your advice, thanks
I'm glad its not. I've played my first B2P game with a cash shop recently, and i really don't care for it.
The RNG in of itself is just ridiculous, and with much pushed toward said cash shop, and then these two compunding themselves, its actually turned me off from spending money on the game and in some aspects, logging in at all. . Positive side, i'm playing for "free' , but i'm also not supporting the game in any considerable way. I really have no problem with a monthly fee, and as i thought prior totrying a B2P, prefer it.
That said i'm considering uping my pledge to the "lifetime sub" tier, so i guess that would be as close to B2P as i would like to get.
think people seem to forgot this game is NOT targetted at a massive audience.. he wants a dedicated community similar to what EvE is doing and while I'm not huge on subs right now I will agree having a sub does give a bit more devotion towards a game.. I would call myself a MMO jumper as I hardly stick with one game for long but honestly I can see the reasons he wants to go the sub route and in all honesty if the game is good enough it will do just fine using that model.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Because before going f2p, they may just milk as much as possible those naive enough to think their monthly fee will fund additions to the game.
There is no before FTP. If the game needs to go FTP they will shut it down and release the code so players will be able to have their own servers.
And if they wanted to make the most money possible, they wouldn't push away large part of the MMO players by saying things like "no PvE", "death penalty", "no handholding" and "no fast travel".

Well, first it will be lower than the market average, so probably between $5 and $10 a month.
Second, while anyone not paying isn't somebody unable to be social, it is true than the monthly fee will prevent a good part of kids to play, thus limiting immature and insulting comments (not saying all kids are like that, but some are, and they tend to be more numerous than adults with the same attitude). It will also keep away people that have as only purpose in life to annoy others.

well, it's not a smart move... games can be made B2P with cash shop if you design it smart. But judging how this FAQ is written (like it's being talked up to me from high) I doubt they are smart enough to survive on todays mmo market.

No what makes people social is a commitment to the game. F2P players hop from game to game to feed their ADHD needs leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Go to the starting zones of any F2P game and watch how racist, rude, and generally pathetic the chat is. This is what F2P gives. As already mentioned their are plenty of those around though. If you enjoy that go find one. This game is not for you.
I don't know about F2P games much, but so far the little experience I had with B2P games showed me how better community is in B2P compared with P2P.

camelot unchained will be a niche game. and you do not need 6million players to run a successfull mmo - any eve player wanna comment on that?
eve is running for years on a base of like 500k players. and eve ain't f2p either.

They were surely smart enough to create an mmorpg (Dark Age of Camelot) that not one F2P game can even compare with in imagination, depth, options such as massive classive differentiation, the fact you get to fight someone different than you because again there's that word, smart...

and all F2P games and players are bad.

yeah, UC is not for me then, fine *shrug*
cool attitude for your "social community"...
He didn't talk about all the players, he talked about what you can see in the chat. You only need a few troublemakers to ruin a community, but it doesn't mean the others wouldn't do a great community without them.
The fact is than being banned from a FTP for using forbidden words isn't really bothersome to them. When you paid for the month you think twice before writting, and while it doesn't mean you won't try to mess up with the others at least you stay polite.
However, i agree with you than the "this game isn't for you" thing isn't a good attitude.
Guess he does not know that in every MMO, players ARE THE CONTENT and he needs A LOT OF THEM
Yeah, I know that's the new catch phrase but I agree with him.
Maybe it's a generation thing but it just grinds my gears to have people work hard on something and the only way they can get paid is uncapping the limit of what the hardcore people are willing to pay so that others can become "content".
Especially when $15 is so pathetically small to one person. And if it isn't then I would say playign multiple mmo's should not be the priority.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Because even though it has failed to do so in the past, supporters of CE think that a sub fee will somehow magically make the community more tightly-knit, and 'keep the kiddies out'.
The level of condescension shown by said community to anyone who dares to question the Gospel of Jacobs shows that it's more than likely no better than WoW's, which amuses me greatly. It'll be even more amusing if the game crashes and burns horribly, causing everyone to fall off their high horses.

They said in a comment that was one of the reason they didn't go with BTP or FTP. Because you don't only need to make a good game, you also need to make a good payment system.
I will take a sub anytime if it allows the devs to spend more time on the actual game rather than on a cash shop.
Becasue Jacobs wants CU to eventually die like WAR and DAOC due to having a sub fee. WAR would still be kicking today if it went F2P as all the mmos that went F2P from that era are still very active to this day.

Well, it's not only the sub fee, there will also be the realm, serveur and guilde pride thing. Maybe i should also remind you that there will be a reputation with so few people, if you do things you'll be known for it if it impacts a lot of people, so if you mess with every person you meet you'll quickly end up alone.
Also you cannot deny the fact than kids have a more difficult acces to money and are generally less mature than adults. So a monthly fee means less kids, so less immature attitude.

If you cannot afford more than one game, and you elude this will not be the game... the question is why would they want you?

Also you cannot deny the fact than kids have a more difficult acces to money and are generally less mature than adults. So a monthly fee means less kids, so less immature attitude.
See, it's not magical.
[mod edit] Guy is asking why this game is not B2P, and ppl talk shit about F2P
B2P != F2P
yea, and he's been castrated right before launch. that's why he is trying another approach now, kickstarter.
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
