Update #26 By CSE - Lore & Building

Folks,

Today will be a “two for one” day in terms of updates; so lots of information and tech will flow. In the usual housekeeping stuff, thanks for the additional packages that you kind folks have been sending to us. We’ve been way too busy to open them on camera but I may do a fun live stream opening and Q&A session this week. If not, I expect to open all of them around Friday/Saturday.

Building Demo

The first update is a working prototype of Camelot Unchained’s Building System and an introduction to Tim Mills, one of our programmers here at CSE. Over the last couple of days he has put together a quick demo of how the building system could work in our game. The cells in the demo are not “finished” and were created very quickly by live stream artist extraordinaire, Michelle. Together, they built a very simple system from scratch in the last two days. Again, please keep that in mind when looking at the demo, only two days of work on it from them! Frankly, Michelle could only spare a little time out of those two days because we’ve been keeping her so busy on new concept art. As to Tim, well, he just coded like a man possessed and out came both a prototype and a CU building session.

As Tim mentions in the demo, please let us know how much interest there is in our building a separate app/game for our backers. BTW, Michelle has also added a fun piece of concept art with the duck-bacon fountain that people were asking about in her live stream here.

The Lore of Camelot Unchained

In the second update I will reveal the main backstory behind Camelot Unchained. I’ll talk about the Piercing of the Veil, the coming of the Veilstorms, the three realms and what drives them ever-forward, the meaning of the anvil and the three swords, etc. While I expect it will generate a lot of new questions, it will also answer many of the existing ones that  people having been asking about Camelot Unchained. We’ll also have some cool early concept art to accompany the video as well. The next update from me will be tomorrow and it will be the BSC idea for stealth.

Shout out time!

This time it is to those talented folks at Larian Studios in Belgium! Their latest title, Divinity: Original Sin is going to be another great Kickstarter success story and we’re proud to have backed them weeks ago! I see today that they have backed us as well! Thanks Larian Studios and best of luck with the last 48 hours of their Kickstarter campaign. We’re looking forward to another kick-butt Divinity title!

-Mark

The building demo was even cooler than I was expecting. The best news out of the entire update today though was the confirmation from MJ in the comments himself that there will be a daily update for RvR starting tonight and through the rest of the Kickstarter. Hell. Yes.

That's pretty cool. Imagine if they can put together something that interesting in a couple days, what they can do with a year or two.

That world of CU would be full of some REALLY interesting structures for me to destroy, muahaha. =)

I can marvel at the beauty and creativity of players before I burn their houses to the ground lol.

I guess after 23 days of silence he couldn't avoid having a few RvR updates about a game billed as "a counter-revolutionary RvR-focused MMORPG" any longer. I hope it'll be as detailed as what we've seen about crafting, building, mining, and the stretch goal The Depths.

If they pile on more info like this and more and more about RvR metagame till the end think it will fund no problem:) good update!

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

Not only can you marvel at the beauty, you can potentiall "steal" some cool ideas by deconstructing their houses before burning down what's left.

I have personally put in a request to be able to "tag" the homes of my enemies. I will spray 'Mids are dirty" and "Hibs are fairies" before pissing on their flowers and burning their houses to the ground. Buwahahaha! image

Not to rain on the parade but I am underwhelmed. Again I can't stand the Minecraft style.  Why, why, why model after minecraft that is not this niche market???

whats wrong with the minecraft style building? allows you to make almost anything you want structure wise with pretty much infinite flexability depending on what resources you have

As someone who personally cannot stand the game of Minecraft, I can still appreciate the concept behind it and the techniques they have made available. The concept of developing a keep to defend with my guild, designed by my guild, built by my guild and defended by my guild... that's so far and above just getting a standard cookie cutter keep to 'claim' for a few minutes before everyone goes into the same tired old routine of piling on the stairs and beating on the same old doors.

The customization and catering to crafters is really a very cool thing. This comes from someone who isn't all that into crafting at all. I am guessing that the same kind of love is being held up for those of us who RvR as well. Saving the best for last so to speak.

I watched the video. I read the post. I understand what they said. I also guess I am not allowed to share an opposing view in this thread. I hope you are not what represents the CU bakers at large because instead of respecting a different opinion you were very disrespectful.  Thanks. Moving on...

Thanks I can understand this view point.  I just don't think of RvR Minecraft buildings etc. about it just leaves a bad flavor.  On the other hand this is so early in the stage it won't end up looking like that...I hope. I guess I am just not looking for a building game which I won't have to I can just RvR. I am just surprised at all the building attention. I wanted more attention elsewhere.

Believe me Zey, you are not the only one waiting on more meat and less potatos. Heh. MJ has been taking some serious flak for waiting so long to drop some serious info about RvR / combat mechanics / stealth, etc. He did mention in the comments before he left that he's working on the Stealth update. Not many picked up on that, but I sure as hell did.

I am just pleased for those who do like to craft since this is the most love they've received in a long time. Keep in mind, this demo was done in two hours. Seriously, two hours. Give them the two years they're looking at and imagine the possibilities. =)

The reason you're getting snappy reactions is because ppl are getting fed up with this website and its anti CU/Mark Jacob theme. I've never seen so many intentional attempts at trolling/flame war on any other site, just here. That said you made a reasonable  comment (sort of). The "mine craft" tag is nothing more than a description on the mechanics behind the building, it was also described as using Lego. If you can't see the almost limitless potential in this then that's fine you can continue to play games where everything is cut n paste and looks the same everywhere you go, I would prefer a world where I run past and stop in my tracks to admire the skill and imagination a crafters put into the house/keep/building in front of me, nothing's going to be uniform in this world, its all original and fresh, doesn't that excite you even a little? You don't even have to get involved in that side of it, don't roll a crafter char and go burn down your enemies creations instead and just pay a crafter to build your home instead. The crafting side has been the focus so far because I'm guessing it was to draw in the backers who wanted more than just RVR all the time but still wanted to be involved. With the amount of dull, soulless mmo games out there now I can't believe how much negativity there is about this game! Never again can the mmo community complain about the same old conveyor belt crap being boring and the same as the last game if they let this attempt to shake the genre on its head pass by

You're entitled to your opinion.   Sorry if you felt that you were being treated rudely man.  I guess Mkilbride felt that you didn't pay much attention that it's a rough demo, he probably could of been a little nicer about it.    I personally think it's decent considering the guy put that together in couple days.

Then again, whose to say that will be the final product.  With the introduction of pre-fabs, and more in depth cell design the buildings will probably lose that squareish look.  That, of course, will take time to flush out.

As has already been mentioned, it sounds like there will be different ways to build, including prefabs, and I suspect cells will be detailed better than at present so there is less of a minecraft feel to the cell building system.

yea and they said someone could make a blueprint and give it or sell it to others.. so basically you would never have to actually sit through and build something piece by piece unless you wanted to

For crafting, think along the lines of UO is having a baby with Minecraft, but around the same time had an affair with EVE... blueprints, endless creative possibilities....

You make it sound like he didn't have intentions of releasing info on RvR, and his hand has been forced.

I was always under the impression that this stuff would come out slowly over the entire KS, to keep folks interested and looking, and talking for the entire month. That keeps pledges coming in as folks see stuff being added and/or that interests them. Keep it on the front page.  Of course the RvR is going to be last, the grand finale, as it were.

I think it was a really good plan. I hope it works out for him.

I really don't think it was a good plan. He should have started with at least some general overview of RvR, combat, and classes. Then the rest of it could have gone roughly like he did it. Finally he could close with a more detailed look at RvR, combat, and classes. The way he actually did it just has created too much doubt among people who are mostly interested in the game because of RvR about how the RvR will work. He's lost a lot of my confidence in the game with the way the game has been presented over the course of the Kickstarter and therefore lost some of the money I might have given to it if RvR had been front and center from day 1.

You know, I have to hand it to you, you're one of the stealthiest concern trolls of CU I've seen in a long long time. Always subtle, always with a caveat, but always something negative to piss and moan about. I can understand constructive criticism, and I intend to give more than my fair share of it during IT phase and beyond.

But the critisism you supply is insidious. You creep it in, slowly, like an ooze that seeps under the door and into the psyche. If you don't have faith in the vision or the game, then pull your funding and go elsewhere. You've found something to complain about at every turn, and I really get the feeling that this game isn't for you, if it ever truly was. That's perfectly fine with me, and I'm not one for telling potential backers to go elsewhere, but I've yet to see you comment or participate anywhere on the Kickstarter comment page, have yet to see you make a positive remark about anything anywhere pertaining to this game in the last several weeks, and have yet to figure out wtf you're even doing here.

Then I realized...you're just concerned. Thanks for your concern, but it really isn't necessary.

If MJ had experience building bridges, and a team of experienced bridge builders working for him, and then he came to me describing an idea very similiar to a bridge that I've really wanted to drive across for a decade...  Yeah, I'd invest at least something in that bridge.

That certainly doesnt make me a fanboi.  I havent closely followed his career or played all of the games he's worked on, but its pretty obvious he's a decent guy whose had some pretty large successes in the industry.

Certainly you can try to tear him down as an individual, but both he and members of his team have been involved in numerous successful projects.  DAOC and WAR are both functioning games.  They both work.  People connect remotely to a server and interact with each other.  If you have a problem with something he's worked on, that problem is going to have been with the design philosophy behind that game.

That is the part that actually differentiates MMO's from each other.  What type of gameplay experience the creators are actually attempting to create.  Not the graphics package or where the buttons are.

Its just silly to question whether MJ and his team are functionally capable of making a MMO.  The important question is whether they are making the right MMO for you.  That is why its important and relevant that he laid out the design philosophies behind this game.  The specific features and the shiny graphics are just the outer shell used to achieve those goals.
