I thought this was funny.  If I have ever seen it, I didn't remember.  Posted by Justin @ Massively

What is Vampire: The Masquerade?

Vampire: The Masquerade is a storytelling game of personal horror.

What's a "storytelling game?"

A roleplaying game with a colon in the title.

How does it work?

Players take on the roles of undead members of a mysterious world of nocturnal intrigue and Gothic-Punk attitude.

What's a "Gothic-Punk"?

Someone who gets laughed at by goths and punks.

There are people in black lace playing paper-scissors-rock outside my window. Should I be alarmed?

Heavens no. They're just playing the live-action version of V:tM. In it, they dress up as their characters and act out their interactions.

Do they actually gnaw each other's necks, then?

No. Touching is not allowed.

What the hell is the point, then?

You got me.

Can you play something other than a vampire?

Sure. You can get the rules in related games like "Werewolf: the Apocalypse," "Wraith: the Oblivion," and "Changeling: The Dreaming."

How about "Bigfoot: The Malodorousness"?

I wouldn't be surprised.

Or "Swamp Monster: The Moistening"?

Sure. Anything's possible.

Or, or how about "Alanis: The Morissette"?

Yeah, yeah, we get the idea.

I bet you can buy all sorts of expansion crap, can't you?

You betcha. Settings like "Chicago by Night" and the much thinner "Montreal by Night," write-ups of important people in the bloodsucking industry, special dice, the whole kabuki.

Vampire dice?

Yeah. They're all marbled and dark-looking, for people who like their random numbers to reflect their tortured soul.

Hey, wait a sec. Wasn't there a TV show based on "Vampire: The Masquerade"?

We don't like to talk about it.

Yeah! Now I remember! It was called "The Embrace" or something. Man. That was a stinker.

Drop it.

I bet you're all pissed that "Buffy" got so popular and your show sank like a lead orc figurine, aren't you?

Drop it, I said.

Oh, I've got another one! "House Painter: The Masking Tape."

Go away.

Well, shoot.  I guess it's only funny to those of us that played the PnP set years ago.  Perhaps I shouldn't have stated it was funny, because I had no idea going into it.  It was a surprise for me.  So perhaps I screwed up the presentation.  At any rate, I thought it was worth sharing.

And I still have all my original books from 15? years ago.  Yep!  I'm one of THOSE nerds!  Woot.

EDIT:  Including the Book of Nod..  Which I have always adored for some reason.

Unfun fact. The show did not got cancelled because it was a stinker (it was actually a quite nice inspired by VTM show) but because the lead actor (the prince, not the cop) got killed in a bike accident :(

I watched an episode long ago. I don't remember anything other than I watched it. I do know, somehow, that Showtime was in talks to renew it before the death of the lead actor.

Be sure to add the Dudes of Legend supplement to your collection. ;)

EDIT: I keep the Book of Nod in my top desk drawer at work.

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Kindred the Embraced was actually a pretty good case study in actors growing into their roles. The first episode had the worst acting and terrible writing. It was just terrible all around. Fortunately by the end of the season it was actually very good. I was impressed with how quickly they were able to completely turn around my opinion on it. I was actually very disappointed that the actor who played the prince died which caused the show to be canceled. I was really looking forward to 2nd season.

Actually, it was cancelled by FOX, Showtime has plans to make a second season though, they made an effort to revive the series, but when Mark Frankel died in an motorcycle accident, there was nothing else they can do for the series, because he was one of the reasons used to revive KTE, after all, he was the lead character.

As far as I know, FOX is the responsible to bring the Final Death to Kindred: The Embraced, they did different things which caused its cancellation, like changing its timeslot a couple of times.
