I hope that this game is in better condition than the last 2 MMOs at release. Star Trek Online and Champions Online. I blame Atari for being at the helm of the games. Neither game was finished at release. Star Trek Online was only half complete and they tried to justify the launch of incomplete games. Their excuses failed completely.
Recently I heard an interview (shown above) where a dev for this game tried to justify a reason for incomplete game at release. Stating that strong character builds are better than having more classes available at release. I do hope that this is not veiled message that the game is not complete.
He also went on to express his philosophy by saying that it was okay to release a game in an incomplete state and that especially with a free to play game that it isn't important for it to be released complete. An excuse is an excuse. This worries me. (add: 43:00 is where he expresses this opion in the video)
In a couple of days we will begin our adventure to find out if the game is good, bad or just plain ugly.
Edit to clarify wording.

It's only a small thing but neither CO or STO have closed up shop, this would warrant your "Failed completely" label, what you probably meant was it failed YOU completely.
As I said just a small thing.
You misunderstood or I didn't convey what I intended. The customers at the time were up in arms over the problems. The forums were alive with torches and pitch forks. No one was buying into their excuses. These justifications failed completely. The games are still around because of people like myself. I submitted over 100 bugs/game improvement in the first month. Which most of them were implemented.

In recent years this has become the standard. Part of the blame falls on Blizzard. WoW was incomplete at release. That is why they only received 3 months of my money. To my knowledge Cryptic was the next offender. Now some games that are not even MMOs have been released incomplete. Alien Colonial Marines, SimCity and Star Trek (the new action game) were all incomplete games.
Now the growing trend is to support kick starters and play alphas from indie companies. My question is, when their games are officially released will they be complete? If not... what is going on with the game industry. The standards have been lowered dramatically.
Add: I am only trying this game because it is free to play. Mainly because of 2 things. It is Dungeons and Dragons, and I hope that Cryptic becomes the company I enjoyed back when they released City of Heroes.
STO was OK, for a while, but it became boringly repetitive. CO never garnered my interest.
NW is shaping up to be a disaster; it isn't D&D, it isn't intricate, and it isn't interesting, but that seems like it is less Cryptic's fault and more WotC's fault for designing 4th edition in the first place.
Cause it sounds like no matter what you're gonna bitch. I'm having a blast though FYI.
Well both CO and STO I was a lifetime sub, CO I was F'd right in the rear. Sorry but thats that. Now STO (I stopped playing) But I Do go back, they have a game there and it's fun, but they never really took the time to streamline the animation issues planet side so it still feels very artifical, the space combat is a blast thou, could have been better but fun and the feel of different areas is very nice. IE starfleet command , space station look amazing now. So it's getting there in time.
Personally I think they need a new fresh of eyes and tweek those things they have "forgotten" and make the game whole. They really could do simple things to make the game feel 100x better.
CO, that was just bad, I mean there is nothing to save there. & what is with the founder packs in sto? an expansion for 120? yeah u get extras but you know, I seen that and was insulted to be honest even thou there is a cheaper way to get it. To me, they are charging 120 for an expansion if you don't pay that you dont get it. Which ok, option to buy not so much, meh cal it personal preferance but I was just insulted as a lifetimer to see that price.
If it was 80.00 I might have thought, "bit steep but I will bite" but at current? No way.

It's a pretty old video, you can find a lot more statements from them about the 5-only classes at start maybe it's an excuse, maybe not, does it really matter? If those 5 are fun, and form a viable team in dungeons, then I guess it's a good state for a start. They plan to add new ones anyway.
For the other launches, I saw only STO's, that was kinda mess indeed. But it turned to be a great game on the long run. I missed CO's launch, only joined to the champions a few months later, by then it was a nice game already.
(But maybe it's only me, I liked all 3 Cryptic games so far, and I plan to play Neverwinter as well, even though the combat doesn't suit me, nor does D&D 4ed.)
......Well thats your opinion sir! Some of us dont like P2W games, or the ability that players can pay money to get ahead of people that just play the game.
....Being Banned from MMORPG's forums since 2010, for Trolling the Trolls!!!
What does make this game P2W?
There is no proper excuse to release an incomplete game. It should be unacceptable by the consumer. Once more and more accept it, games will never be released completed and odds are they wont be completed. Companies will release what they have and move on to the next project.
Don't get me wrong, for the most part I enjoyed the titles when I played them. But they were flawed because of bugs or lack of content. At one point I felt like they should have been paying me since I basically debugged their game for them and on my second play through with another character for CO, most of the bugs or quest side stepping was gone.
I am interested in this game, I played DDO at launch and I loved that game. This seems like a weaker version of it. (This could be my love for disarming traps and finding secrets as a rogue in that game speaking out. Are there even traps in this game?) But still could be fun. I just hope the dev was only talking about characters and not actual content. If he was only talking about playable characters, I honestly do not mind. But if he means actual content then this wont be pretty.
I am glad you are enjoying playing the game thus far. What level are you? I glanced at some twitch streams and a few streamers are max level already. Unless 60 isn't max. I found that sort of surprising since they said they were not going to make it easy.
I hated CO and STO but i am having alot of fun with NW.
I think they did better with this game than their last 2 but that's just my opinion of course.

I played in both STO and COs closed betas and was adamently against releasing them in the state they were released. They had no end-games and their content to fill in the gaps was sparse. That's to saying nothing of the utter lack of fluff systems like item dyes, transmog, etc
I'm very comfortable with Neverwinter being released in its current state. Outside of its barebones selection of classes, it feels like a game that's already been out a year or two,
Measuring Neverwinter by the release of STO and CO would be a mistake. The games is in a significantly better state.
This is true. Neverwinter is far more polished and in a better state than both CO and STO were at launch.
I guess it also has to do, that their game engine and tools have now been optimized, so they could just focus on creating the game and content right from the get go.
