Trying to understand what is so special about DFUW

I find it dull and outdated, but maybe I have not given it the attention it needs. Some questions:

- Is there a story/lore for the DF world?

- Is there a way to progress and become more powerful/geared/experienced other than mindlessly grinding the same mob type over and over again?

- Apart from the prowess system (all actions generate the same points called prowess, more of which makes you better in everything), are there any other systems in game that are worth mentioning/understanding/exploiting?

- Are there various builds for each class that each would take some experimentation and different playstyles to work?

- Is there a vast amount of different items that make looting interesting?

- Does PvP really require skill and tactics or is it just grinding mobs for ever and when at the appropriate prowess quick turning around yourself and clicking 2 buttons?

- Is there a consequence PvP system in place that promotes PvP, while at the same time protecting lower level players? Eve is a great example of this.

- What prevents griefers crossing the safe zone line and laugh at my uber-PvPer friend that just came to protect me?

- Are there magnificent, hand crafted places that leave you just staring at them?

- Is there vertical sync?

- Do I need to lose my job, girlfriend and all other interests in order to just stand a chance in having some fun with this game?

- Is there an auction house?

- Why is this a sandbox? Please explain the sandbox elements of the game. Lacking quests, lore, a progress system and every other system does not make a game sandbox, but half-baked.

Thanks

     - Is there a story/lore for the DF world? The players make the story with their own interactions.  Been playing the game for 2 weeks and I have more stories to tell than any experience I've had in the past since playing Eve or DF1.

    - Is there a way to progress and become more powerful/geared/experienced other than mindlessly grinding the same mob type over and over again? Gathering, crafting, and yes the feats for prowess require you to hold a spawn in order to achieve it.  This promotes pvp as you will always make contact with other players trying to complete the same feat.

    - Apart from the prowess system (all actions generate the same points called prowess, more of which makes you better in everything), are there any other systems in game that are worth mentioning/understanding/exploiting? What's the question?

    - Are there various builds for each class that each would take some experimentation and different playstyles to work? Yup, I use greatsword skirmisher against primalists and bow with anything else.

    - Is there a vast amount of different items that make looting interesting? This game is about skill and tactics not gear or pretty lewts.

    - Does PvP really require skill and tactics or is it just grinding mobs for ever and when at the appropriate prowess quick turning around yourself and clicking 2 buttons?  At around 15k prowess you can take out anyone if you get the beat on them.  And yes, since it has it's FPS style, you have to aim and shoot.

    - Is there a consequence PvP system in place that promotes PvP, while at the same time protecting lower level players? Eve is a great example of this. It's pretty apparent the benefits of pvp.

    - What prevents griefers crossing the safe zone line and laugh at my uber-PvPer friend that just came to protect me? Not being an idiot and PVEing right outside of the safezone?

    - Are there magnificent, hand crafted places that leave you just staring at them? It's a computer game, not pottery class.

    - Is there vertical sync? Good one. Yet why would I limit my FPS? It averages at about 120 and city lag has been reduced greatly.

    - Do I need to lose my job, girlfriend and all other interests in order to just stand a chance in having some fun with this game? Some people will, and won't regret it either. But no, you don't.

    - Is there an auction house? There will be a market, but right now it's trading in Global with prices fluctuating with supply and demand.

    - Why is this a sandbox? Please explain the sandbox elements of the game. Lacking quests, lore, a progress system and every other system does not make a game sandbox, but half-baked.  I think you just be  half baked as you obviously lack the initiative to create an enjoyable experience in the sandbox, hence you just find that there's nothing there.

     Thanks

    No, thank you.

Be more specific with your critisisms - e.g. "outdated" isn't necessarily a bad thing. The best game concept that I know of is Ultima Online (a very "outdated" game) but no game has ever come close to this in terms of simulating a living, breathing fantasy world.

    - Is there a story/lore for the DF world?

I don't think so, but who cares? The idea is that there is this big fantasy world there for you to explore. Do what you want to do.

    - Is there a way to progress and become more powerful/geared/experienced other than mindlessly grinding the same mob type over and over again?

Yes, there is. You can join a clan, do it in a team, and wait for the unexpected to happen - it's usually PvP and a bit of exploration. You can also get more powerful by just crafting if you really want to.

    - Apart from the prowess system (all actions generate the same points called prowess, more of which makes you better in everything), are there any other systems in game that are worth mentioning/understanding/exploiting?

Gear is also important (all the good stuff is player crafted). Teamwork helps for the big, important stuff.

    - Are there various builds for each class that each would take some experimentation and different playstyles to work?

Yes, the 2 main classes are fighter and mage. They subdivide into a total of 4 classes. More classes are on the way, I believe. Look at the company website for more detailed information. They all play very differently.

    - Is there a vast amount of different items that make looting interesting?

Yes - some people would say that this is what the game is all about.

    - Does PvP really require skill and tactics or is it just grinding mobs for ever and when at the appropriate prowess quick turning around yourself and clicking 2 buttons?

    Both approaches are possible.

    - Is there a consequence PvP system in place that promotes PvP, while at the same time protecting lower level players? Eve is a great example of this.

Yes, there are protected areas, similar to Empire space.

    - What prevents griefers crossing the safe zone line and laugh at my uber-PvPer friend that just came to protect me?

You can't hit players in the safe zone.

    - Are there magnificent, hand crafted places that leave you just staring at them?

    Oh, yes!!!

    - Is there vertical sync?

I don't know what this means!

    - Do I need to lose my job, girlfriend and all other interests in order to just stand a chance in having some fun with this game?

This is debateable - it depends on what you want to do! If you want to run the biggest, most powerful clan in the game, that might take a bit of time. If you are just exploring / adventuring it's totally variable.

    - Is there an auction house?

    No.

    - Why is this a sandbox? Please explain the sandbox elements of the game. Lacking quests, lore, a progress system and every other system does not make a game sandbox, but half-baked.

There is no such thing as a 'sandbox' MMORPG! This was a term invented by CCP to market Eve Online in videos such as The Butterfly Effect. If you want a proper sandbox, then I suppose you should try Minecraft. if you mean "Is this game a free-form simulator of a fantasy world?" then the answer is yes.

    Thanks

It's a PvP conquest game that attracts the most toxic community any game has ever had.

To be honest, I love their PvP system, and I wish more games would make use of the ideas there, but DF:UW lacks in almost every other measurable way in my opinion.  If they had made a more well-rounded game around the PvP system I would be inclined to play it, but right now it's just a game where you take turns being dead with other people, usually by getting ganked by groups of players with nothing better to do.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

The best way I can tell you about what makes Darkfall so special is to talk about actual gameplay experience.

My initial goal was to kill swamp hags.  It’s been hard to do since all the spawns are heavily camped.  So I left the island Ruby, which is the southwestern island on the map, and made the trek to Alfar lands.  http://yourmom.at/agon/

Enroute, close to my destination I come across a lone Ork fishing.  I’m a Primalist and charged up my Virtuous Wrath spell and blasted him in the back.  He was not afk and immediately turned around.  I didn’t attack anymore and just continued merrily along my way and sent the ugly Ork a message saying that  I just wanted to make sure he was on his toes.  He laughed and followed me and together we went to the chaos stone.  I bound myself to the stone, which means if I recall or get killed, I will spawn at that location.  It was within spitting distance of the swamp hag spawn of which I needed about 140 of them.

I start making my way over to the poisonous swamp with my new ugly friend in tow.  There is another person already there, but with the 3 of us, the respawns are quicker so no one attacked each other.  I found a spot high on a cliff, content that we were working together but not trusting enough to be fighting side by side.  I started raining death from above and was making good progress but started getting really tired.  One thing to know about Swamp Hags is that during the games day cycle the swamp hags are pretty easy to kill.  However, come night time, they spawn into Night Hags and they are a pain in the ass and are a lot harder to kill.  So as I was saying, I started getting tired and I have about 50 swamp hags left and then the games day cycle changed to night and figured I’d call it a day and I quit.

The next morning I re-entered Agon renewed and ready to finish off the hags.  Excellent, the spawn is empty and I start killing away.   I realize I’m running out of spirit beads which are required to cast my spells.  I need only 8 more hags when I see two enemy players.  I know they are enemies because they start running straight at me, and I don’t think the arrow that was knocked and the fireball that was charged was intended for Swamp Hags .  One is an elementalist and the other is a skirmisher (archer).  There was no escaping the much more mobile Skirmisher so I started using up all spells in my arsenal and fought the fight of my short UW career.  They were not very good players, but they both had triple the prowess points of me.  I was zig zagging, using terrain, managing my stats well and they were doing a lot of damage to each other.  I actually had both players on the ropes but I kept having to peel off and switch targets and never could get off a finishing blow.  Eventually they brought me down, but they didn’t get much in terms of loot.

I regear, but only take minimal regs and make my way back to the spawn.  It appears the two that killed me were the first of 5-6 players from the same guild.  They had that spawn on lock down and didn’t look like they were in the sharing mood.  I jumped out from behind the rock that I was crouching behind and shot off a bolt, getting a killing blow on the Hag they were beating on.  Awesome, just reduced my total remaining hags to 7.  This action seemed to piss off the clan though as they all descended on me like a bunch of fat guys at a buffet.

Sorry guys, this got to be a long story, so I will simply say that  they eventually left and I finished my feat.  Which felt really good.

We're a community that has 2 contemporary games that cater to our niche.  One is internet spaceships known as EVE and whatever you want to call DFUW.  I'm not saying this game is perfect, or even close, but it's really all we've had for over a decade, and that's made us a somewhat cynical bunch.

A good analogy would be if you really loved playing No-Limit Texas Hold'em, and one day they just decided to make all games fixed limit, which is where you can only bet a maximum amount per bet, making the game more about luck than skill.  Then a casino comes out and says it's bringing back no-limit, and after 8 years of waiting, they finally come out with it, but the deck isn't full..  That was DF1.  Now DFUW comes out and it actually has some promise.. Now understand why our community can be a little defensive when people criticize our one hope for the game we really want to play.

What bothers me the most is when people who create accounts on this forum just to bash this game, because the game itself is quite polarizing.  Some people love it, and some people will absolutely hate it.  I just don't want someone to come onto this forum looking for a game and then see someone with 4 posts and take their experience as being the end all say all.

I personally love the game, despite being frustrated by it a lot.. But I also recognize the way AV has gone about its release and I really see that they're much better at managing an MMO then before.

Everyone hopes that just in few months the game will reach it's true potential - and it never happens, because game like that is never truly finished.

Original UO was unfinished, with horrible exploits ruining the gameplay - but people still loved it, even in it's original form.

ArcheAge will be next - the sky-high ambitions are put into test when real people start playing, and find ways to get advantage never intended by developers.

As long as people see that the game is evolving in right direction, they remain optimistic, and enjoy truly unique experiences not found anywhere else.

    - Is there a story/lore for the DF world?

A: Not really.  The story is mostly player driven and has to do with taking holdings. Defending holdings and clan wars.

    - Is there a way to progress and become more powerful/geared/experienced other than mindlessly grinding the same mob type over and over again?

A:There is harvesting, crafting and yes I will agree killing the same mob OVER and OVER again can get boring.  But just go and try and hold down a good spawn outside the safe zone and tell me its boring...  You will have pvp breaks at least ever 30 min in my experiance so that makes it fun as you have to keep on your toes while grinding.

    - Apart from the prowess system (all actions generate the same points called prowess, more of which makes you better in everything), are there any other systems in game that are worth mentioning/understanding/exploiting?

A: IDK crafting will get you good gear, not really sure what u want here.

    - Are there various builds for each class that each would take some experimentation and different playstyles to work?

A: Absolutly.  I play skimisher in groups but most the time solo I like to roll DEX warrior as I feel more powerful and able to win 1vs2 and such.  There are also the STR skirmisher build, STR mage build, and DEX primalist build that I have seen people play and do well with.  You may have the same skills as others of your role but the timing of when to use them and how to use them in a fight is up to you.  Makes for most pvp encounters to be a guessing game to see how your opponent is going to try and beat you then you must play to your strengths and exploite their weaknesses.

    - Is there a vast amount of different items that make looting interesting?

A: Yes I would say.  There are TONS of items used in crafting and just about EVERYTHING in the game is useful and has value to someone.  Killing a person and opening their grave is a great feeling as you will never know for sure what they have on them.

    - Does PvP really require skill and tactics or is it just grinding mobs for ever and when at the appropriate prowess quick turning around yourself and clicking 2 buttons?

A: I think I answered that question already.  Absolutly.  This game requries more skill/tatics and quick thinking of how to use terrain to your advantage then any game I've EVER played and I've played alot of them

    - Is there a consequence PvP system in place that promotes PvP, while at the same time protecting lower level players? Eve is a great example of this.

A:Not really.  There was in DF1 but everyone just joined clans and didn't use the alignment system anyways so they got rid of it.  Its good IMO.  If you want protection you need to join a clan and go farm mobs near their city so you can have backup if you need it.  But personaly I've found alot not killing newbs.  I myself a 25K skirm/dex warrior will not gank anyone under 10K prowess most times. (If they are in a clan I don't like or have real good gear on I make exceptions)

    - What prevents griefers crossing the safe zone line and laugh at my uber-PvPer friend that just came to protect me?

A:There is a timer, people think they can jump the border and do get away with it often but its always fun when you catch that fool just right and gank him 2 feet from the safe zone :)

    - Are there magnificent, hand crafted places that leave you just staring at them?

A: Absolutly.  This game does not look like WOW.  There are SOOO many hidden spots you will never find unless you search every nook and cranny and there are floating villages.  Huge mountain ranges.  And nothing stops you from climbing any mountain you see or swimming to the bottom of any ocean( yes there are even stuff like kelp and underwater cities in the ocean)  People may think the grapichs are outdated but I got a good computer can run on decent settings and I think the hand crafted world is beautiful.

    - Is there vertical sync?

    A: Not sure, think so...

    - Do I need to lose my job, girlfriend and all other interests in order to just stand a chance in having some fun with this game?

A: No.  At least not IMO.  Has it taken over my life yes... but you could just skill up slowly not worry bout all the fools with 50K plus and in a month or so you will have 20K prowess no problem and will be useful in group fights and if your skilled will even be able to kill people with 15K prowess more then you.

    - Is there an auction house?

A:  Not yet but they are working on a market system.  One of the top things on the list to be added.

    - Why is this a sandbox? Please explain the sandbox elements of the game. Lacking quests, lore, a progress system and every other system does not make a game sandbox, but half-baked.

A:  Well thats is my defination of a sandbox personally.  No one tells you what to do.  For instance in DF1 I wanted to get enchanting up so I went around killing the monsters I needed for the materials to skill it up and that little self quest lasted most my DF1 career lol.

    Thanks

Just wanted you to get an answer from a person who really knows this game.  I played DF1 for years,  played DFUW all beta and now it has taken over my life.  No game I've ever played even comes close.  Honestly I've tried bout EVERY MMO, DF is the ONLY one that can keep my attention and that is because every time you log in its a new experiance.

Also I agree the first guys answers to your questions were kinda annoying.  Personally just about EVERY old school DF player I've ever got to talk to is pretty cool.  Few douches but thats life.

    - Is there a story/lore for the DF world?

    -Yes

    - Is there a way to progress and become more powerful/geared/experienced other than mindlessly grinding the same mob type over and over again?

    -Yes

    - Apart from the prowess system (all actions generate the same points called prowess, more of which makes you better in everything), are there any other systems in game that are worth mentioning/understanding/exploiting?

-Crafting, conquest, high end PvE, villages, chaos chests

    - Are there various builds for each class that each would take some experimentation and different playstyles to work?

    -Yes

    - Is there a vast amount of different items that make looting interesting?

    -Yes

    - Does PvP really require skill and tactics or is it just grinding mobs for ever and when at the appropriate prowess quick turning around yourself and clicking 2 buttons?

    -Yes

    - Is there a consequence PvP system in place that promotes PvP, while at the same time protecting lower level players? Eve is a great example of this.

-1 character per server.  If you do that you will get a bad name.

    - What prevents griefers crossing the safe zone line and laugh at my uber-PvPer friend that just came to protect me?

    -20 second delay

    - Are there magnificent, hand crafted places that leave you just staring at them?

    -Yes, many.

    - Is there vertical sync?

-Irrelevant.  You can force or disable that through Nvidia panel

    - Do I need to lose my job, girlfriend and all other interests in order to just stand a chance in having some fun with this game?

    -No

    - Is there an auction house?

-It is supposed to be added soon.

    - Why is this a sandbox? Please explain the sandbox elements of the game. Lacking quests, lore, a progress system and every other system does not make a game sandbox, but half-baked.

-No set path, no set factions, 100% player driven crafting, 100% player driven PvP, 100% player driven conquest.  It isn't minecraft, but it is not a themepark.

    Thanks

He's was just trying to put the game down, not get real answers, which is why I was pretty sarcastic in my responses to his seemingly condescending questions.

No, I wasn't. I just think the game is awful and felt i wasted my money. I am trying to see what there is to like, since there are so many fans out there. I guess I am missing something.

You are probably not missing anything and this game is just not for your taste. Darkfall is not for everyone.

What is it exactly that you are looking in an mmorpg? Are there any mmorpgs that you actually like?

It's like...soccer hooligans in an online game, with each clan being a "firm".

Sure, I play EVE since 2005. I played SWG until they destroyed it. I also like Rift, GW2 and think that WoW is amazing.

I would understand DF if it was a quality product for a special kind of gamer. What I dont understand is how such a poorly made game has the ability to create a fan base, lie to it and repeat!

Yeah it's kinda amazing. They promised the game first november 2012 and then there was some minor issues and they would release 2 weeks later in december 2012. Then the months went on and about 6 months later the game was finally released with loads of missing features.

The game was far from ready late 2012, Aventurine knew it and lied too their community. My guess is they needed funding to continue develop and that's why they promised a ready game late 2012 and got all the preoder money in.

I bought it but i wont support those liars over at Aventurine any more.

I am just saying my opinion mate. Sorry if you disagree, but this is not trolling.

Come on dude. You are just trying provoke.
What i dont understand is how this game is getting so many haters. I mean, at least its trying to be different to all those wow clones out there, it was created by a small indie company and its not like it can ever be a real threat to the supposedly AAA mmorpgs like WOW, GW2, ESO, etc. I can totaly understand if you don't like it, but why all the hate? Why spam the forums with how bad you think it is?

I bought GW2 and i found it absolutely dreadful for my taste, yet i didn't bother to spam the GW2 forums, i just stopped playing and found something else to spend my time on.

  • huxflux2003huxflux2003 Member Posts: 21
Well there has been alot of hate and flaming in GW2 (and every other game) as well, its just that with GW2 most people are ok or at least do not feel offended with the product that they bought. With DF, there are alot of people pissed about spending money on it. I'd say most of the people that try it. This is reflected here and everywhere.

I think partly because this game reminds people how cowardly they are. They would love to join the fun but the words "full loot" make them run crying to mommy.

It's silly because in reality there's nothing really hardcore about this game. Sure you lose your gear from time to time but it's so easily replaceable it's really a non issue.

On top of that you have the unlucky few who bought the game but can't play it in good conditions (usually because their PC is old and the game crashes every 10 minutes).

Finally there might even be a layer of xenophobia going on here. Aventurine is a Greek/Norwegian company. Some folks in the States might hate it just for that.

So the bad UI, the prowess grindfest or the awful animations are not  even worth mentioning as problems?
