Will NOT run on Windows XP :-(

Temujin99Temujin99 Member UncommonPosts: 12

For all of us that still run XP.. sorry, Dragon's Prophet will NOT run and according to the beta tester forum responses SOE does not plan to make any changes to make it so. Their response by   Linda "Brasse" Carlson, (Director, Global Community Relations Part-time Prophet O' Dragons & Flagons Sony Online Entertainment )to myself and others that complained was  "The development team has no plans to add Windows XP support at this time." At least she added a bit of humor to it with her second response; "I finally upgraded my own old, beloved XP this year because more and more programs are dropping support for it, and more and more new programs are not built for it. Once I got used to Windows 8, I found I really quite liked it. RIP my old buddy, XP!"

So. in order for me to take advantage of the Beta tester key I got yesterday I need to spend abt $80 for the OEM upgrade (I build my own computers. Also, as it requires a clean, full install as xp can't UPGRADE to 7, I have to save all my current programs to an external drive and start from scratch.... I KNEW I should have taken advantage of MS's $40 special offer last year to upgrade to 8.. lol

Why are you still using XP ?  If your PC can handle this game it can handle windows 7 which is a far superior OS.  Vista sucked I stayed with XP but windows 7 is a way better OS.

    Stay away from windows 8.

yea like said above why use XP? 7 is much better OS with better driver support and more stable... i backup and rewipe my OS all the time doesn't really take long and I have a LOT of crap on my PC

i'd hold off on 8.. you could always just d/l 7 if you wanted to.. haven't looked at prices for 7 in awhile may be cheaper isnce 8 came out

you build your own computers yet you would actually use an upgrade version of Windows?

    Windows 8 isn't that bad...

It's not going to set the world on fire and it has issues I agree.  If building your own and you own Windows 7 I would stick with it, if you don't then theres no major harm going for Win 8 or Win 7 (currently Win 7 will have fewer driver issues, and if using older hardware Win 7 will probably be the better bet, it's worth noting the OEM liscences are different too iirc).

Sadly thats the reality of gaming, newer OS mean the old ones get left in the dust, I have lost loads of old games because of it (many just don't like the new OS and their compatability modes / software work arounds).  To be honest I am a touch suprised they have supported it this long given it's well past mainstream support and in the last year of extended support.

To be fair to SoE, they are just dealing with the localisation for this game. If the Korean developers havent allowed for XP compatibility(I would hazard a guess that Korea has a much higher uptake of new Windows versions) then there really isnt much they can do other than ask them to look into it.

But as others have said, its probably time to move on from XP.

They seem to keep extending support, as saw last year that support was ending some time in 2013

If MS still supports XP, then why change? I only have Windows 7 through a new PC,. but my old PC still has XP, and functions just as well, and in most cases I still prefer it. I have no intention on upgrading and paying extra for Windows 7 on old PC, it is not worth it, especially when it is still being supported.

Windows 8 is actually far quicker and better on RAM usage. Though I agree visually the whole thing kinda looks like they half finished it. I kinda like the new Start Menu but it's useless when 90% of software still executes on the desktop. Even Windows programs are all desktop apps still!

problem is that Windows XP only supports IE8.  Websites are starting to not be compatible with IE8, and IE8 has a ton of vulnerabilities within it. So sure you can install a alternate browser, but this not not resolve the vulnerabilities, rather it masks them so you are not always aware of their existence. It also adds other potential vulnerabilities as well. I am still running XP on a system with limited requirements, but I run at least two systems at once for any of my desks so I don't browse on the XP machine. Soon Win XP PC will be removed from the internet all together and I will be replacing it's position with an alternate.

You are aware the vulnerabilities that are browser based still afflict later OS right?  I agree using IE8 nowadays is not the best choice since that has long been abandoned but XP would still have access to newer browsers and is still recieving security updates.  You can still stay relatively safe using an XP machine if you choose and the largest problems that arise are generally user based when it comes to most infections on PCs (and thats almost always been the case).

I did know that IE8 had problems, but I use Firefox anyway.

I use IE10 on Win 7 and certain forums start getting loads of guests start popping up, yet when I use win xp and firefox, no guests appear. Win 7 PC infected or something else?  Norton 360 finds nothing other than tracking cookies, but firefox should have that too as websites require these cookies to function. If it is infected then having all the latest stuff does not make for higher security then.

by all means, use whatever OS you want.  If you feel that the experience you have with computers will guide you in the right direction, than who am I to argue.

As for the developer, why would they expend resources on an OS that is set to expire in less than a year?

Windows 8 isn't all that bad.  My new laptop has it.  It starts in about 3 seconds :)  no literally, 3 seconds :)

It takes some getting used to, but it's actually easier to get to what I want now than with Windows 7 on my desktop.  I'm thinking of upgrading my desktop to Windows 8, but as mentioned before, Windows 8 does have some driver compatability issues with older things.

YOu wouldn't have wanted the upgrade license anyway. The new OEM license is transferrable between computers now. So when you upgrade or build a new one, you can move the OEM license over to the new system. You can't do this with earlier OEM versions of Windows or with a Windows 8 upgrade license.

Yet another painful reminder of how dated my system is, but I'm gonna need something worth doing if I drop another K on a gaming machine, I may just forgo it for a PS4 though, the way online games have been behaving these days.

        + 1

XP uses less ram, loads quicker and has years of updates

Vista sucked for awhile, but is now pretty good

Win 7 is great but didnt start that way either.

I use win 7, its great, but i still like xp, it cant handle tons of ram (Pro 64 bit is a little better), but anything more then 6 gigs of  ram in terms of games is just over kill and hardly ever used.

    Bzzzz  , wrong.

Microsoft XP support ends April of 2014, You can call MS for official business support on it until then ,  and always have been.

    http://support.microsoft.com/ph/1173ey

Not saying anyone really should be running it any more , and glad they are finally officially killing it off , so we can force some of our clients to get rid of their last machines with it and it also forces lazy business software vendors to finally push out official support for 7 64bit and so on.

(you'd be surprised how many idiotic business software firms still as of this year won't officially support 7 64bit , idiots , makes job as engineer a pain)

So I'm glad to see game companies stop worrying about supporting it , the clock is ticking anyway as of after that date zero more support or updates anyway.

I like good games, and unfortunately, MMO selection is riddled with disappointment so yeah, beside I see next gen taking in a lot more MMOs, I'm just hoping that console or control necessary MMOs start becoming a standard, because action gameplay is very handicapped on keyboard.

Have they said why Windows XP isn't supported?  If it uses DirectX 10/11 and doesn't have a DirectX 9.0c version for backward compatibility, that would explain it.  DirectX is proprietary to Microsoft, and they make DirectX 10 and later only available on Windows Vista, 7, and 8.

DirectX 10 brought geometry shaders, which are a huge deal, as there's a ton of cool stuff that you can do with them.  But if you're also going to have a DirectX 9.0c version, then you have to either implement the same things without geometry shaders or else have a version of the game that doesn't implement at all what you used geometry shaders for.  The former will bring a large performance hit that would likely make the game unplayable due to low frame rates anyway, and the latter may or may not be practical, as if you simply don't draw some important stuff in the game, invisible attacks and such can break a lot of things.  You can get use of geometry shaders in Windows XP by using OpenGL 3.2 or later, but that introduces issues of its own.

Regardless, I'd like to see games start fully embracing some of the cool new capabilities that video cards have added in the last six years--and that necessarily means forsaking backward compatibility to Windows XP, Radeon X1000 series and older, and GeForce 7000 series and older cards.
