The UI for the gamepad is the best in the industry for an MMO. Vast majority of the people in BETA LOVE it. Unlike the previous version where it was the same ui and you had to scroll between abilities using the controller, now you have a layout that is tailor made for a controller.
I think many FF fans who only have a PS3 that can run the game will buy it.... especially in japan. Consoling gaming is huge over there.
There has never been a console game with a sub that did well. The few that have tried really didn't keep any semblance of a user base past the first 30 days. SE has a long uphill battle if they want to break that barrier.
A model like Defiance (box purchase, dlc, cash shop) is probably much easier to sell to console users since it's something they understand. I have not played the new game and have really not even paid much attention to it so I couldn't tell you if it's a good game or not but regradless I think a sub on a console might be a hard sell.
My previous post wasn't really about the controller interface, it was the knock on effect to PC users playing the game.
Last time SE simply ignored the fact that PC gamers have a keyboard & mouse - not just a couple of fingers and thumbs to use.
This game wants to attract PC users, who are the mainstay of sub based mmo's. But limiting their user interface like before was one of the minus points clocked up by the game.

Final Fantasy 11 did pretty well for square on PS2 and 360 with a sub and still running since early 2000
Originally posted by adam_nox I hope they are working on the ps4 port too.
Back before the PS4 was announced they posted a picture of them doing testing in their offices with a PS4 controller (they didn't say it was PS4 controller but people kinda connected the dots especially after the announcement)..
Not too much AAA titles nowdays.. a game with this graphics, multiplataform (PC, Ps3 and Ps4 soon announced) Will have an scalable client (Months after release,or a year, they will submit a DirectX11 Client.) PvP Skills announced to be different of PvE Skills (To can Balance PvP not unbalancing PvE), Housing, more complex Crafting and Gathering than 1 click games, 24 Men Raids...
I am only waiting to test gameplay at Open Beta in Phase 4. I dont know if Raids will be out at launch but all i want is a game where i feel involved with a decent gameplay and graphics. Anyway is confirmed around 3 Endgame Dungeons 8-men and Primal Fights (Ifrit, Garuda, Titan, Ramuh, etc)
This game give me a good feeling.. i hope nothing is too bad at launch to make people leave, or to take too much time to fix it.

Um sorry but FFXI was made for consoles and is very successful, over 10 years running now. I know I still use my gamepad on it.
Do you still play it on the PS2 or 360 though? Consoles life spans are limited and no matter how well a game is made I completely understand not wanting a sub. I wonder how many people still play FFXI on the 360 seeing as the PS2 is now dead or I at least believe it is if its not I give props to Square Enix for keeping the PS2 servers up and running.
A PC won't be discontinued in 5 years from now sure it may be outdated but for the most part the online games you play on a PC are not going anywhere. This is really why I feel games need to allow account transfer between platforms I understand the whole crossplatform issue but are the accounts theselves property of the games developer/published and not the console maker so why can we not do crossplatform account transfers.
I would totally love to get FFXIV for the PS3 to play from my bed but how long will they keep the servers runing once the PS4 is the mainstream game console. Even worse if this gen has a 5 year cycle like is projected what about when the PS5 comes out and the gamers who bought FFXIV on the PS3. When there are games like WoW, EVE, and even Runescape that are still quite popular after 9+ years now I know anybody who played that long would be pissed if their account got deleted because the console they played on is now considered old and outdated.
Looking forward to this. Im going to buy. Ps4 when it drops, but I will still play this at launch on ps3. Once ps4 hits who knows I may play still but they really should offer a discount to ps4 owners who buy it for ps3. It is an mmorpg after all and having a larger player base has been good for mmorpgs

It was developed on PC first, so one would hope they'd have a more mainstream PC control setup.

How would you ever buy anything if you thought it might be outdated in 5+ years?
Every TV, Car domestic appliance..all pretty much fubarr in 5+ years
I'd rather SE were just honest and said.
"This is a game for you - a product for us - we are going to support it as best we can for 5 years then we will need to review the circumstances that prevail then. New technology, new ideas, and even perhaps the changing desires of our consumers"
If you have the idea as a game as a "lifestyle item" something you want to commit to for decades..then you're going to be disappointed more often than not, and the issue is with you not the developer.
They are games. PLAY them - but don't over commit to them emotionally. If you want a relationship to commit to, get yourself an outdoor hobby sport, learn to paint or learn a musical instrument, read some classic literature, spend more time with your kids - your life partner, girlfriend, whateve
Taking GAMES so darn seriously that you are pre-guessing what they are going to be like in 5+ years and basing a piffling small $50 buying decision on some future percived loss of your invested commitment is not a balanced approach to "fun" IMO
You sound like you will be heartbroken over a $50 game reaching the end of a life cycle it hasn't even started yet.
That's not "playing a game" - that sort of thinking should be reserved for life and death stuff.
I play 50% of my PC games from my bed with a controller. Don't see why more don't do it - all it takes is..... a controller (360 controller is the defacto PC controller now and is sold as such without 360 branding)
Buy to play is my preffered over sub, I prefer free to play over Subscription because I like having access to my characters all year round, and not have to pay $60 to $90 a month just because I feel like playing a variety of games and not just 1... The rotational musical chairs mmo subscription ordeal is a pain, that's whys o many people quit playing wow and return every expansion for about 3 months before they quit again, people just can't afford to keep multiple subscriptions going for MMOs at the exact same time, and there's only so many game players out there to fund your game, so why not just go buy to play?? I'd love to buy zone/quest packs and expansions and still get to enjoy my characters and log in all year round 24/7!!! I'd still support the game, but without any of the annoying restrictions...
Tera's idea is nice and useful, but so far they are the only ones to implement a system of buffs instead of penalties, and Lord of the Rings Online / Dungeons and Dragons grind system is nice, but Sony really needs to allow a way to earn station cash for playing instead of paying for it... I wish FF14 could go Buy to play, I'd love to just support them through buying fun stuff and still get to log in my characters, whether I feel like playing a lot a month or playing a little that given month...
Playstation 4 not being backwards compatible is a big deal, because in this technological age why do we have to keep every single piece of hardware in order to play it? Now a TV has to be wired with 3 or 4 devices if not 5 and play a game of musical gaming system roulette? There's the Playstation 2 because Playstation 3 isn't backwards compatible, the Playstation 3 itself, and now the Playstation 4 because it isn't backwards compatible with the Playstation 3. On top of that, you have your Xbox 360 or 720 next gen, and your Nintendo Wii or Nintendo U, which thankfully is backwards compatible?
So, if we could simply have backwards compatiblilty we'd knock off the need for the Playstation 2, the Playstation 3, and the Xbox 360 (or Xbox), which would clear up the TV wired setup and only require 1-3 devices instead of 3-5 devices being rotated around!!
Also, in my personal opinion I haven't seen any launch titles that I am interested in announced for the Playstation 4, so I have no intentions of buying one for probably a year or two until they announce something, but if they had backwards compatibility more people would have a reason to buy it and play Playstation 3 games that they already own, instead of waiting an additional year or two to buy one. Sony should see less sales on launch, simply because they don't seem to have enough exciting games to buy one for.
Originally posted by zevni78 Still impressed at how different it feels from 1.0, Yoshida did a great job on the fundamentals, and if the new features we get at launch and in the months after work as intended this could go from a good to great mmo.
Would agree with a little (big) difference. It seems to go from a worse mmo (1.0) to a good one (now).

An MMO is not just a game though and a high quality MMO should last for more than five-years. An MMO is usually not a game you play casually for a couple hours a week like a normal single player game and an MMO is not Call of Duty where people are fine having to buy a new one every year. An MMO is a game where a person will devote hundreds if not thousands of hours into it and having your account deleted simply because of a consoles lifespan is BS. All I'm saying a MMO from a major developer should have a life span of over five years and I am also saying that the PC version of the game most likely will. My biggest gripe I am getting at is that an MMOs lifespan should not be limited by the system it is on if you would have included my full post and not taken it out of context what I was saying if developers are going to make MMOs on consoles that have limited lifespans they need to begin including account transfers between different versions of the game.
Also I am an avid skier and that is what I truly dedicate myself too along with my studies. So thanks for assuming that every person who wants an MMO to last over five years to be some weirdo with no life whatsoever.
