I think this is a great time to open this topic since a lot of new MMORPG's just launched like Age of Wushu, Neverwinter, Ragnarok 2, Scarlet Blade (lol) and more...
Before people start jumping to rashional conclusions like "it's based on player preferences" or any other trolling I like to say that, sure different players like different type of MMORPG's, but this is not what this topic will be about.
This topic is about gathering as much info on all current avaliable MMORPG's and comparing each other to determine what more or less they offer. Things like enjoyable combat to class choices, immersion, endgame features and pace of content updates. We currently have more choices than ever when it comes to MMORPG, but because of this I believe the market is scattered and we are seeing a lot of MMORPG's but with reduced quality than what I used to remember playing before the WOW era.
Anyways, if you are playing any MMO that doesn't force monthly sub your welcome to share to the community what exacly it offers. So I'll start...
Last MMORPG DCUO (After it was Path of Exile, but that doesn't really qualify)
Lift of things I can think:
Great graphics, almost fully voiced with a great IP. Innovative and enjoyable combat system, instanced arena type PvP, raids (operations), alerts (daily dungeons). As you can see it's the typical WOW clone minus the rated battlegrounds and a dedicated site for ranking. It has crafting and beautiful cities to explore and do side things like feats (achivements) that actually making your character stronger. It has some seasonal events, but yea that's as much as I can think of atm.
For a free to play player the cash limit can be problematic, but it's bearable. The new content (DLC) cost like $10 I believe and it's optional, which is a good thing to be in control of what you want to buy. I definitely look to check it out again once Origins come out next week. I've truly enjoyed the game over a long period for spending far less than what I remember in WOW.
Now I also started kinda Neverwinter, but haven't put much time in it to give my imput on it.

As far as MMO's go... the only 3 that draw my attention are Archeage, Dragon's Prophet and Repopulation... none of em have launched so I cannot really recommend a F2P game as such... if you're into themeparks with quirks Neverwinter and Vanguard offer something decent, heard good things about Age of Conan and can recommend both Guild Wars 2 and The Secret World as worth the price of purchase but... no F2P game's I'd recommend as being worth the bother in terms of "Yes I play em, have for months/years, this is a good game".
If you want diversions in terms of quick action with some progression World of Tanks and War Thunder are worth the bother and are as free as a game can get (arguably World of Tanks is free-er than League of Legends) and while not MMOs they are good for a few hours of fun each day ( and as a fun fact War Thunder is a game that's gonna be land/sea/air in the same client and the devs recently announced they're looking into making the land part, currently only the air combat is in OBT the other two are WiP, be cooperative in terms of vehicle control, what has been mentioned is driver/gunner positions if opted for in vehicles which could work really well ).
That's my 2cents, hope it helped.

Not played Neverwinter or ddo
I'm an avid Roleplayer, and there's really only two games that aren't sub-based that are good for roleplaying, imho.
#1 Neverwinter
#2 Lord of the Rings Online
As far as playing the actual game, I'd have to go with Neverwinter or Defiance, depending on what you want. If you want your typical MMO layout then I'd say Neverwinter. If you want something different, and less focused on the normal crafting, leveling, and such, then I'd say Defiance. I'm currently playing both...
#1: Scarlet Blade
Nothing else comes close. Neverwinter is one massive cashgrab, stayaway.
also game asking 200$ for beta tests can't be fair priced.
PWE is not "cheap" published either and they make lot of advert for NW (at least I see way more as it was for RaiderZ), so I guess they have big financial hope on NW and I guess who gonna pay.
try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2
Versus a player like myself who only plays "one" MMO at a time.
I'd go with Aion as one of the most fully featured MMO's, with housing, raiding, end game PVP, and lots of characters, classes and flying combat for hecks sake, and you don't need to pay a thing to enjoy the entire game.

TSW: Probably the most unique and fantastic world out there in mmos. IF your a fan of anything lovecraft, supernatural (show and genre) and mystery you will love TSW. It features some of the most interesting characters and quests (IMO) right now. With an skill system (no classes) you can play how you want. While endgame consists mostly of gear grind the rest of the game is fantastic. And at 30$ its extremely worth it.
GW: I tell people who play wow and the related themeparks that GW2 is similar and different enough to warrant some attention. Heart quests and DEs while not as special as some make out they are refreshing (the exciting ones atleast). The classes are fresh and fun and WvW is a blast if your on a good server.
Playing: FFXIV, DnL, and World of Warships
Waiting on: Ashes of Creation
Real life?
You log in by opening your eyes on your spawn point, read your messages from your laptop, heal up with brushing teeth and eat breakfast for that stamina boost
Use your mode of transport to get to the point of battle, where you tackle your heretic work schedules as well as getting in PVP with mean colleagues.
Need items? Go to the pantry to steal food for healing after getting injured by your boss' screaming. Then you realised your transport is not working, so you have to walk all the way to your spawnpoint where you log out by closing your eyes.
Or died in the office, and respawn again at your spawn point. Whatever.
The possibility of the universe collapsing into a singularity is higher than the birth of a perfect MMORPG.
Objectively, it's hard to beat GW2. It has great production values, a ton of content, frequent updates, some unique features and a barely noticeable cash shop. Then again, it's quite expensive compared to F2P games. It's the only F2P/B2P MMO I can think of that doesn't have a glaring fault.
The Secret World. It's not perfect, but the setting is very original (in terms of what MMO's usually offer). The combat can get kind of boring, but some people love it. It's worth the box price, easily.
The Old Republic is worth playing through at least once. Just treat it like a single player game for the most part, and the class stories are passable. It's free to 50, although with restrictions to things like xp rate, but you can get there without too much trouble regardless.
I'd stay away from Lord of the Rings Online, unless you're a hardcore Tolkien fan. The game is really starting to show its age, especially with combat, and it can get to be quite a money sink if you play past the original content. DD Online is in the same boat (same game engine and developer) but without the interesting setting.
You make me like charity
It's definitely polished. I just fine the setting and gameplay to feel very generic.

TSW is not what i expected, too much myth and ledgend, not enuff reality conspirathy.
The most other games are themepark trains, you settle up but instead of a massive open world you get only small locations, playfields but nevertheless its fun then and when.
This is my list of some current installs ordered by my current focus:
- FireFall
- Neverwinter
- Tera
- Neocron2
- War Thunder
- Anarchy Online
- Path of Exile
- Fallen Earth
- AoC
- TSW
cheers ^^
