Well, I guess that means all that's left is WoW.
Will it go F2P or B2P? Place your bets!
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
This has me interested and I'll likely play (and invest) quite a bit in it. May even subscribe since I could quit my subscription any time and still have access to my characters and the game.
Half a decade ago they said that WoW would likely go F2P at some point if it got to the point where subscriptions couldn't pay for the costs of operation. Though if there is a new payment model that arises before then, they'd likely adopt that. Then again it's be a long time since such a thing was mentioned as they kept on getting more subscriptions in.
Playing: TSW, D&D NW, Defiance (more the tv show than game >.> ) LotRO, DCUO
Indeed. I was thinking they (WoW) might go the way of B2P or F2P by the time they released Titan so that they could have a cash shop cash cow and a subscription one. As far as games that have subscriptions like these, I'm more likely inclined to pay for them knowing that I am not just "renting" the game and can quit at any time and still have access to the work and game I previously bought. If it technically isn't worth a subscription to me, I'd still use the cash shop every now and again depending on just how much I play the game.
If a game like WoW went B2P (most have the game bought already, but they can still make some on box prices if they have some kind of gold package with all the expansions) then I could see it's population explode once more and profits surge to unbelievable heights. Though that's not likely in their cards until the game is just a few million strong (or less) and they want to do something "big" to regain tens of millions again and revitalize the franchise.
WoW won't go to a cash shop model for a very long time. It would need to lose at least 97% of it's current player population.
A bit sad it went F2P. I was hoping they would’ve taken TSW route and gone B2P first. I really have to check my list of strictly P2P games. I remember games released post 2006 had roughly a dozen games using the P2P model exclusively (this was back in late 2011/early 2012). I think that list is now down to 2… maybe 3 (excluding FPS games)? I know there are still about half a dozen (or more) games released prior to 2006 that are still using the P2P model. FFXI, WOW, EVE come to mind.
Haven't seen you post in a while, Ambrosia. Welcome back.
That's how I feel. The sheer volume of Rift's content will easily put B2P and F2P games to shame. If you're looking for an MMO that can keep you busy for 6+ months and then they produce content during that time, it can easily go to 8+ months, there is no other F2P option besides Rift. I'm so tired of having to play an MMO only to reach the cap and not have anything to do, forcing me to leave and come back.
However.
Do we even want to play Rift anymore? I was initially thrilled about Rift, but part of the reason why I left the game in the first place was because Rift was the WoW clone of all WoW clones. SWTOR has been F2P for a while and I never touched that game, because frankly I'm tired of the WoW formula. Even though Rift emulates WoW mechanics the best, do we still want to go back to eating same ol' meat and potatoes we've eaten for over 6+ years?
Now that I've tasted action combat, games with good graphics, and raid free communities, is games like Rift even palatable to me? I think at best Rift will be able to get it's original one million subscribers back at launch, but I couldn't imagine anybody that never bothered to try Rift in the first place wanting to play it now that it's F2P.
Hm. I am actually a bit surprised.
Thought that Rift and World of Warcraft would keep their subscription. I guess only WoW can allow to do this...
If I heard this a month ago I would have been thrilled, but I started to play Guild Wars 2 again and it is actually not that bad as I thought it would be since launch.
The only thing I hate about GW2 is theres no gear progression... There is in Rift, but the combat is not just as fluid as with Guild Wars 2. Of course it is also alot older than GW2.
And also that Rift mainly is a PvE game, with very stripped PvP.
Dunno about Tera but yes i do say the others are pretty much done for...if SWTOR fix there f2p model they can compete a bit cuz ppl still want to swing around a light saber...i never thought neverwinter will make it..Tera's f2p model is great...RIFT would be the only westernized game to have a good f2p model (if the buying gear thing doesnt screw things up)...seems like only Aion and Tera..the korean games have good f2p models but if RIFT did this...all i can say is im excited..i do hope the buying gear stuff would be something like gear that u buy to level up and then once u get to endgame all of it will be obsolete and u have to grind out the dungeons and the raid content
edit: and to the post above me RIFT isnt that much older then gw2 they almost came out int he same year gw2 kept getting pushed back
I think listening to players talk about Rift going F2P really opened up a window into the minds of people that hate the F2P model. Now granted, there are a lot of games (almost all) that are F2P but are simply garbage like Neverwinter, but there are also games that are good F2P games.
It seems the general idea is that F2P games cater to casual players, and hardcore players hate that a lot. Rift kind of reminds me of EVE, another P2P game with a dedicated hardcore sandbox player base. And Rift has a dedicated hardcore Raiding player base. That's how it was a launch as well. And that's fine, there aren't that many MMOs that actually cater to hardcore raiders anymore. WoW has a lot of raiding but it seems that it seems that WoW's raiding isn't even hardcore enough for the Rift players, I guess they don't like WoW's LF Raid finder?
I don't know if Rift was ever a casual friendly MMO, and I'm thinking that the developer's originally intended it not to be. So it's surprising that they would do a complete 180* and go F2P trying to bring in the casual audience. I don't think this game will seriously appeal to casual gamers unless Trion goes full monty and puts in a lot of cash shop items to mitigate the leveling grind, gear grind, reputation grind, and especially the horrible PvP ranking grind. But if they do go all the way, this will pretty much kill their hardcore raider community. But if they don't do it, then I don't think the casual players are going to be sticking around for long when they reach endgame and find out they are just fodder for raiding guild community.
This will be interesting to see how far Trion is willing to go with their F2P model and cash shop.
There are plenty of smaller P2P MMOs - mainly sandbox ones.
The "advantage" of F2P model is that you can downsize the team without immediate consequences to the revenue. Nobody would pay subscription if the only new thing they get is bunch of cosmetic items every few weeks - and F2P audience just doesn't care.
Some mmo players seem they live in a different world or maybe in their virtual world, i think there is no lack of creativity just that world is living an economic crisis, and each time are more countries in troubles i'd like to know how many people from SPAIN, GREECE, CYPRUS, ITALY and many other countries around Europe excepting Germany and some other few can pay a 14 Euros a month to play a game.
