Being able to own. Owning players is crucial part of allowing the player to experience greatness, power and in general satisfaction of success. I find lack of freedom lately limiting that.

In Ultima Online I could own multiple gankers solo and fully loot their corpses and dominate an area to control it for different purposes. Also factioners, naturally voted the most powerful as their leader.

In SWG I had everyone and their covert friends chasing me for that big bounty reward and I did feel greatness and satisfaction. The price for that was being able to overcome again multiple gankers.

A player being able to impact the community around with his choices is crucial to any MMORPG.

Starcraft oldschool aka wise/04. SWG/UO aka Wise HeRo, Light Jedi Knight pre-cu (Bria)

While the easy answer is "fun", since nobody is going to play a game that isn't fun, since this is aimed specifically at MMOs, my answer has to be "an excellent community".  That's what's driven me away from MMOs more than anything, the immaturity and self-centeredness of the community.  I don't want to play with these asshats, I don't want to be around them, I don't want to talk to them, I don't want to hear a word out of their mouths.  I want an entirely better class of people playing these games.  Until then, I am going to play solo if I play at all.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more
    Now Playing: None
    Hope: None

    Uh ...none.

There is no 1 feature that is crucial.

If an MMO has 1 really good aspect but everything is terrible then its a bad MMO.

If there is 1 feature missing or lacking but everything else is good then its still a good MMO.

Take crafting for example - Im not going to play a bad MMO just because it has good crafting nor am I going to skip a good MMO just because it has bad crafting.

Exploration is tempting but I would say consequences to my actions. Give me the freedom to make a more difficult choice. So freaking tired of every mmo released, post WoW, trying hold hands. Throw me to the wolves in pve and pvp.

Extensive customizability of character combat abilities. Manual stat dist, large selections of heavily stat varied gear for all levels, high modability of gear with random luck based values (enchants with large variances both positive & negative, socketing, plusing, fusing, etc) etc.

I cannot stand MMO's where every player of the same class and level is always evenly matched in PVP, Every character should be able to become completely unique based on their own preferences and play style.

Flyff although not exactly a gold standard of MMOs, this is one area it excelled at like no other. A lvl 15 could own a lvl 45+ in PVP easily if the player knows what they are doing with the build, massive twink potential. Diablo 2 is also a great example of this.

Mandatory interdependence between players. That would include leveling, crafting, exploration, raiding, basically everything past level 5 or so.

Played: EQ1 (10 Years), Guild Wars, Rift, TERA
Tried: EQ2, Vanguard, Lord of the Rings Online, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Runes of Magic and countless others...
    Currently Playing: GW2

I would agree, and I would take it a step further.  Exploration, of a large open world, and a leveling pace that takes long enough to see a lot of it on your way up to max.

I might have cheated and snuck two in there, but I tried to tie them together at least.

I go with his idea. i hate how every expansion in wow xp required to level just get toned down and even before i can enjoy everything in a zone i out-level it. lame.

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

Crucial to me to enjoy an MMO?

Hidden deep in the configuration system, that adorable little button that I uncheck to make general chat go away.

No emphasis on PvP. No reason to PvP. No forcing of PvP.  No PvP at all is a major plus.

Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.
