In any case, I believe Sony did this because they simply gave up trying to get rid of all the chinese gold farmers. Why resist something you can't ever completely cure, when you can profit from it? I guess this shows what kind of different companies NCSoft and Blizzard are than Sony.

I highly doubt the numbers being tossed around, but that is another topic for another time.

If anyone thinks this will be restricted to certain servers, you are crazy. $oE will.. will.. make this available on all servers if they think it will make them one nickle.

I remember when SoE just made a game that people liked and didn't change focus to design game mechanics to earn extra revenue. You know, back when SoE was the king of online games and had the players pulse. It is no wonder why they are getting their ass handed to them in sales and subscibers.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Should keep alot of the trash off normal servers. Will be interesting to see how this works out, though...

Well, I definitely have to applaud SOE for this. They took the 1st step, unlike some other major MMORPG companies out there, they decided to take the risk. I think it's going to work out well for them, they recognize that a lot of people like this, and a lot of people don't, so they can split up the servers for that. I love this idea, it's a great step for MMORPGs in my opinion, there won't be as much underground trading for EQII now, because it will be legal, and to be honest, if SOE wanted to, they could capitalize off of this big time, just a small tax on each of the auctions could lead to millions in revenues on their part. But overall, it's a good step in the right direction.

"As long as it stays off my server"

You mean "As long as it stays off the server you are on"? Unless you own your own private server. I will give you 100:1 odds that it's already ON "your" server through either eBay, Enotts, or IGE.

I have to agree with this decision. I hope more commpanies acknowledge this as a business model. Sure there are PLENTY of valid arguements against cash-for-items, but it's just not going anywhere. It's a reality. I agree with the idea that atleast this way SOE can monitor it a little better and "hopefully" help curtail some of the fraudulent deals that HAVE been going on. Also, I am sure anyone who tries to be a "farmer" using this system will be noticed pretty quickly and dealt with.

In the end, tcash-for-item sales are just a reality now for whatever reason there may be behind the transactions. I will just be happy if they are removed from third-party companies like Enott's and IGE. I am not so dead-set against eBay, but the other two I surely do not like.

I also have to agree with several of the above posters that at least this is a step , may it be altogether imperfect one, in the right direction. There's simple no way to legimately beat the concept ( life is riddled with people buying their way through things, games are no different ) so someone has to come up with a system to officiate and legitmaise it a little better than it is. I know I recently read another company was going to be offering a service such as this as well ( cannot remember which game but the Thread was "A Threat to IGE" I believe ). So saying that NCSoft and Blizzard are any different right now is speculation. Give them time. Blizzard isn't the Holy Messiah of Gaming as many blind followers may believe. They are, after all, a company out for profit as well. Plain and simple. This is more like a change in the paradigm in general for the MMO world as we know it. I would rather see some semblence of order rather than that chaos that ensues now.

But that's just me...and everyone has a right to their own opinion.

"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

Ah, many of the Mmorpg.com members are onto Sony.

If you can't beat em. Join em! Sony Exchange is going to try to replace virtual sellers like IGE and the like. The Exchange servers have two real purposes - another income revenue stream (buying/selling of items/accounts) and identifying those types of players. I am going to assume once you join this server you would be flagged as a virtual merchant of sorts. Trying to buy/sell items on other servers /expansions will no doubt cause you to lose everything.

Now the headaches of trying to find who is buying/selling their virtual goods can be reduced significantly because they all have a server to play on. the question is...

Will such virutal items be more or less valuable than regular servers? I wonder if someone wants that uber item of greatness would be willing to buy it from an exchange server or if the price will plummet because everyones goal on that server will be to obtain items of RL value. Would be interesting to see how the RL market perceives this Exchange.

I think of DAOC and its encouragement of virtual property transacations/accounts and it is still going strong.

Im annoyed by this move as a gamer. Video games are meant as a place to escape reality and have fun. Where player skill and knowledge in the game matters.

What fun is it when someone buys their way to excel in the game?

How much fun would it be playing a game of Monopoly to see a person enter with rl cash to win. Or Risk for that matter. Its a game meant for simple fun. Keep the cash out of it.

You can't get a super upper hand in this game... to many limits and restrictions... what this is good for is the guy who can't play to long because they have a job... like me... I don't have time to make 100 gold to upgrade my character every 5 levels

  • Madcap23Madcap23 Member Posts: 8

Been mulling this over since I read about it and decieded I really do not care.

The only way this will effect me will be if SOE lowers the level on items... And All the people that are saying "I quit because of this" come on... This is not what is making you quit, otherwise you would have quit the moment IGE or PlayerAuctions had items for sale.

WoW has the MOST items listed on PlayAuctions currently, IGE has gold listed and heck even Penny Arcade the comic did a strip on the "Wild Gold Farmers of the Plains" in WoW.

This allows people that WANT to buy money, items or characters a safe and Trusted source to buy them from. Unlike a person I know who was screwed out of $3K in the EQlive hay day by buying items from others and not getting them.

The Charge stated in the quote seems to be the Paypal charge, not an SOE charge... However to be fair they are charging you to place an ad to sell the stuff (The Listing fee they mention in the full explination).

Will this kill EQ2 for me? Not likely... Is this a direction that other game companies might go? Maybe... We will have to wait and see.

I guess I didn't clearly read the post by Smed the first time. I gave it a quick read and assumed that you could only buy items off SOE.

But being able to sell whatever item I have for real money?

Not sure whether I like this idea or not yet. I thought I hated it at first, but it has pros and cons.
I contemplated leaving EQ2 for various reasons.. but seeing how things may be going, maybe it's smart just to leave MMO's period.

It really does kind of kill the whole... fantasy aspect with this new exchange. Regardless of whatever companies did what before.

It does seem inevitable that other companies will adapt this... business tactic.

    Ah well.

It's absolutely amazing to me how many responses to this event, both in this thread and in similar threads on other sites, show absolutely no awareness of the fact that it will only be on certain servers.  If you don't want to buy stuff with RL money and don't want to play with people who do (that you know of), don't join those servers.  It's that simple.  The whole sky-is-falling mentality baffles me.  Unless I am completely misreading the situation, I don't see my server economy changing much at all as a result of this announcement.

While this will be great news for kids who aren't good enough at games that they must resort to buying their way through one, for serious gamers it is an unfortunate trend. I know I will not be playing SOE games in the future as a result of this.

I am slightly worried how this is going to effect the game. Most ppl will now want to sell items for real cash instead of in the games market. Making it unavailabul for us playing the game. I know they will be opening servers spesific for this but it will deffently effect the market on whatever server it is on.

But its a "groundbreaking" and new idea. Points for SOE for taking the step, will be interesting to see how this is going to work out.

One thing I dont like is that they are going to have a "vote" on the servers on how many ppl want this option. If more ppl vote yes then the server will turn into a trade server....not cool. They should open new servers with this option instead.

Can you say 2000 Megaton Elephant?

    Yes, I knew you could....

I said in another thread about how these guys treat us 'casual' players and I cancelled soon after I subbed.

    What do you expect???
