I work for a ISP most of our calls from customers who buy consoles do it for Netflix and streaming Video. You can say Sony is going to win this war and they might but for the Adult crowd who enjoys Netflix and other videos including live tv and sports Xbox will win over any other streaming device.. MS was smart to let content from the Xbox be used on tablets and smart phones..
Well yes, the Xbox One can do Netflix. So can the PlayStation 4. How is this a reason to buy an Xbox One over a PS4?
Did they not consider that some people were calling the first Xbox the XBOX 1, up until now?
Type "Xbox 1" or "Xbox one" in google and do an image search.
Not sure how being mistaken with the first Xbox is going to be great marketing, but then I'm sure that whoever came up with the name Xbox "One" doesn't have any past experience with Consoles.
Exactly. And if they seriously messed up something like that, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence in anything else about that console.
I really doubt that it would need to reserve 3 GB of system memory for the OS alone. Even Vista loaded up with all the bloatware that Dell or HP or Lenovo or whoever can find wasn't that bloated.
etween 3 separate OS' and chances are that fast switching will eat a chunk of it up as well.
And why exactly are there going to be three separate operating systems running simultaneously and all needing access to system memory? That doesn't make sense.
Obviously MS vice President Phil Harrison has no idea what he is talking about. Right? ROFL!
Seems like he doesn't. Things do not seem solid yet:
Update: Sounds like things are a mess over at Microsoft. Now they're telling Polygon that Harrison's comments illustrate a "potential scenario."
That sure sounds like a trial balloon. In other words, what they're planning on doing unless sufficient backlash forces them to reconsider. Microsoft's threshold for "sufficient backlash" is dauntingly high, though; consider that Windows 8 still forces you to the start screen unless you get independent software to fix that.
Perhaps the conversation went something like this:
Executive: We need to sell more Xbox One consoles.
Lackey: But sir, there are only so many gamers out there willing to buy gaming consoles.
Executive: Then we'll need to convince non-gamers to buy it. Add a bunch of non-gaming features that gamers won't care about.
Lackey: But sir, you can do all of the non-gaming stuff much cheaper if you don't need a CPU, GPU, memory, and hard drive suitable for gaming. If there's a market for a gaming console for non-gamers, someone else could easily build it and undercut our cost of production enormously.
Executive: Let the marketing department worry about that.
The problem with the TV stuff M$ have engineered into Xbox One is likely at launch it will only work in the USA and even there not for everyone. M$ have ended up with a console with weaker hardware and that is also trying to compete with Apple TV-like products and Tivos. M$ just haven't built up an iTunes, they just don't have the content, and the third party players that supply content aren't exclusive to M$. So M$ have re-invented the media center when really they need to hit the spot for gamers. Who is going to buy these things at launch. Why, gamers, Sir. The uptake from casual gaming crowd is slower than the hardcore and they will jump on the most popular one, i.e. the one the hardcore gamers pick and buy first. M$ have managed to fumble their console's ball badly here. PS4 will be the best selling next gen console.
In case you guys haven't seen this one (it's hilarious)....
I really doubt that it would need to reserve 3 GB of system memory for the OS alone. Even Vista loaded up with all the bloatware that Dell or HP or Lenovo or whoever can find wasn't that bloated.
Not sure if the fee is going to be as much as the game costs to begin with either, but you have to admit, that is fucking hilarious, and pretty damn accurate on how a lot of X-box fanboys feel.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
Basically, Microsoft's approach of weird interfaces, charging for things that are free, restricting user rights, limiting indie development and trying to get between users and everything they want makes money. Sony's approach of being more consumer friendly does not. Go figure.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

But will it make money? If PS4 outsells Xbox One by a 10:1 margin, Xbox One probably won't be terribly profitable.
Remember that the PS3 was hobbled by a CPU architecture that made no sense for gaming, and also by not having nearly enough memory.
It does seem that the majority of us gamers will either be getting the PS4 or not buying anything at all!
Personally I will stick to PC Gaming for a good while.
Honestly, I don't think I'm buying shit anymore.
The time seems ripe to get back into other forms of gaming, with you and a few friends gathered around a table with cards or whatever just having a good time. All this contemporary mass market appeal video gaming crap is a major turn off by now.
Xbox ONE is the current laughing stock of the next-gen console 'race'. Not really much to get excited about. They clearly don't have their sh&t together.
Hopefully they'll pull their heads out of the sand and come up with stuff that's actually appealing.

Given what they've managed to do with the unmitigated disaster that is Windows 8... I wouldnt hold my breath. The Xbox One actually makes the Wii U look good

Personally i think your 10:1 margin is a bit conservative, the PS4 has such a distinct edge now, even if it wasnt a more powerful system, which it clearly is, from a gamers standpoint. Its also significantly cheaper to buy than the Xbox one. The problems that dogged the PS3, should have been removed by their change in the consoles overall architecture. Sony might well have managed to turn their fortunes around with the PS4, not sure that Microsoft will be able to say the same.

agree, last i heard PS3 was most popular device for Netflix
Today Netflix revealed that its subscribers view content on the PlayStation 3 more often than any other device in the living room. Holding that top slot means Sony's console remains ahead of the Xbox 360, Apple TV, Roku's various streaming devices, and other hardware. In a statement, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says the PS3 has even topped the PC "at times" to become the service's most popular platform overall — though it appears that's not presently the case.

Youtube, a free service is behind a paywall for XBox. And yet, this is a primary profit driver for them. People are lining up to pay for the "premium" service of having Microsoft charge them for free stuff. It's entirely possible that the direction Microsoft is taking is the way for them to make money. Maybe they'll have fewer customers, but they'll have more money.

I just don't get the short-term strategy here for Microsoft.
Backwards compatability is gone in this next-gen; including all the download games (ie XBLA).
What's tying anyone to their console now?
Alienating their primary retail partner in Gamestop with their 'used games' policy.
Screwing up the indie developers.
It just makes no sense.

Honestly I wasnt impressed with XBox 360 either. PS3 and now PS4 offers everything we would use a gaming console for. Also, in the mess of the XBOX one debacle it appears that Sony will allow third party DRM which will be at the discretion of the publishers.

From their perspective, it might make sense to charge money for all this stuff people can do for free, because people keep giving them more money for it. Even if they get fewer people, they are going to charge more money and it will probably drive their revenues even higher.
Or they'll implode. I have serious doubts that Microsoft management has any real idea what to do with themselves. Their OS revenue is flat and the business division revenue is down. For the past ten or twenty years they've had no need to make the effort that other tech companies have had to make. They know they have to do something, so they are targeting the only bright spot they can see, XBox Live memberships.
